About Me
I love music. I also love writing. And, of course, I like the Sess/Kag pairing of Inuyasha! So, as an effort to combine all these things, I have decided to write Songfics! I usually don't like reading Songfics. Maybe it's because the usual Songfic consists of the story, and the lyrics are separate, italicized, and only seen as a sort of listening guide rather than telling the story. There is nothing wrong with that in the world of Fanfiction. Fanfics exist for us to take a known universe, extract some characters, and twist the universe and characters for our own fun, rather than profit. But something bothers me about Songfics, or for that matter, other fics with songs in them, that have the lyrics copy and pasted, in italics, for about half a page before it returns to the story. Okay, I get that your Female Character is dancing/singing that song, and your Male Character is totally enamored because of that. It just sucks to read lyrics to a song you already know in the middle of a story. It's okay to have lyrics either at the very beginning or end of the chapter/fic, or spread out amongst the fics so it's very subtle, but I don't like it when I see huge chunks of italicized lyrics in the middle of an otherwise well-written story. Nothing wrong with that, it just is a personal pet peeve of mine. Maybe that's why I started writing some Songfics. Well, of course, every SongFic is usually started because we really like this song, and doesn't it sound just like something this and that character would get into, and wouldn't it be neat to see it all played out? But I think I started to try and build a better breed of Songfics. The songs we hear and write about tell a story, and we write the story down so that others can see it just as we did. My belief is that we should let the lyrics into the story, instead of segregating them, and putting them in italics in huge chunks. Why should we not have our characters say a line of the song as one of their talking lines, or hint at the lyrics in the story, as part of the story? Why not let the lyrics tell bits of the story, instead of keeping them separated from the story? Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather read something like that, seeing the song and story play out with the lyrics blending the two. That's not to say I'll just be writing Songfics, and if you do write them, I don't intend to bash you. I'm just letting my personal feelings be known. When I do write Songfics, though, I intend to blend song and story so that you see the song in the story, and the story in the song. I hope you enjoy them, and I encourage you to listen to the original songs that my fics are inspired by. |
