If only I could've taken Japanese for my General Education (kind of like a single semester length elective) course that is compulsary with my degree! I went back to visit relatives in China at the end of last year and I visited Beijing, Shanghai and my hometown (Ningxia - which I wouldn't really recommend visiting) for the first time in 10 years. Out of those places, Shanghai was my favourite. The air wasn't as bad, it was warmer (mind you, I visited during Winter so it being warmer during summer may not necessarily be a good thing ^^) and generally the atmosphere seemed nicer. But yes, visit China

GACKT AND HYDE~~ If I ever got into music fandom, THEY WOULD BE MY OTP. They're so beautiful together... Have you ever watched the movie 'Moon Child'? It stars both Gackt and Hyde and Hyde's acting was really really good! I remember reading somewhere (possibly an interview?) about how Gackt said something along the lines of "if I were gay, Hyde would be my choice" or something XD;

I have far too many favourite songs from L'arc to just choose one, but here's some of my all time favourites off the top of my head: Drink It Down, Daybreak's Bell (actually pretty much the entire KISS album), Shinjitsu to Gensou to, Jojyoushi... and many many more. L'arc is pretty much my big J-rock love and I've been listening to them for years. Though believe it or not I don't actually have 'Fourth Avenue Cafe'. Which album is that song part of? I was pretty into K-pop a while ago but then after being introduced to the k-pop fandom my love for even the music has died out. The k-pop fandom is incredibly... harsh towards those that don't agree with their views and well, let's just say I didn't like it very much there ^^;

If I really had to pick and choose... I'd say my favourite Japanese artists are GACKT, Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen, L'arc~en~ciel and Utada Hikaru. I listen to many many Japanese artists and most of them are on the indie rock side of things. But those four are my absolute favourites.

Now that I think about it properly, BoA might've been the first Japanese singer that I was introduced to. A friend (well, Magikarp lol) gave me a song by BoA 6-ish years ago and that followed by Inuyasha (also from Magikarp... actually I don't think I returned her dvd yet XDD) and Chobits after that leading to increasing amounts of manga and anime sort of led me onto the Road of No Return, aka Fandom

The story goes that, during the civil war, a man was taken prisoner in this fort. His wife decided to rescue him, so she dressed up in the clothes of a Union soldier and brought her husband's pistol when she came to perform her daring rescue. She actually got into the fort only to find that her husband had been killed. Enraged, she went and found the commanding officer at the fort. She shot and killed him, but was captured and set to be hanged. They asked her if she had any last requests and she said that she only wished to die in a dress rather than the man's uniform she was wearing. They found a long black dress used in soldier's productions and they hung her in it. She still haunts the fort in her long black dress to this day, and the soldiers have pretty much all seen her. Sometimes she's nice, sometimes she's not. All I know is, I'd rather not meet her.

I love House, especially for lines like that. They always manage to slip some sort of moral struggle in there and it really resonates. Don't worry you're not strange, hehe As far as Tigger goes, he was always my favorite. Did you ever see the Tigger Movie? I was considering writing this reply in Japanese but my Japanese writing skills are sorely lacking practice and whatever I write down probably won't make too much sense XD;

So, to answer you question: I can safely say I do understand some Japanese but not enough to qualify as being able to speak it or understand it completely. I studied Japanese for about 2 years in high school and since then have broadened my knowledge through anime, dorama, songs and variety shows which compared to my friends who studied Japanese to the end of high school (all 5 years!) is about the same. My vocabulary is good (better than those friends of mine) and so is my listening but my particle usage and sentence structure is terrible! I know enough to play otome games with a dictionary (for when they're not speaking) though

Someday I want to be able to speak and read/write Japanese fluently but right now I don't have any time nor opportunity to take it up properly
