Okay, this may sound silly, but -- what the heck is a YIM? I know the general meaning - no minors and all that - but, not the actual acronym meaning.
And, secondly; even though everyone posts 'NO YIMS!' everywhere, do you honestly think that will stop anyone underage from actually reading it if they wanted? I mean, hell, I know people who have been watching porn since they were sixteen; reading it really would be much, much easier.

I don't know what YIM means, the actually meaning behind it just that the material is mature and children shouldn't read it.
As for the second part-Why are warnings generally placed on things? To give a warning as to what can be there.
People putting "No yims" is to let readers know the material is mature and should not be read by underage people. While it won't really stop people from not reading, it gives the warning so the people that post aren't really responsible for whatever the person that was warned chooses to do.

YIM = Young Impressionable Marble, where Marble refers to the human mind, and the acronym as a whole refers to anyone below the age of 18.
About your other question, YES! It does stop YIMs from going where they're not supposed to, as our moderators and site admins keep a very strict watch on all users, especially YIMs. If they tracked you reading something you're not supposed to, or posting something you're too young to post, there will be consequences. Usually, it results in deletion of the story/art posted and/or a ban of the account as a whole.
Simply put, Dokuga is a site where people actually mean what they say. If an adult member linked a YIM to something inappropriate for them, they would get into trouble for it too - the site doesn't have too many rules, but they're meant to be kept by ALL of us, not broken or even bent. And really, why would you risk getting banned or otherwise reprimanded for doing something you've clearly been told not to and been informed of the consequences of disregard? I think most readers look at the rules on the forums, and decide it's just not worth ruining their fun that way.
Keeping a tab on every user is a tough job, and there have been incidents of rogue YIMS, but on the whole our mods are pretty efficient and omniscient!

YIM can mean "Young Impressionable Marble" which is pretty much minors
or it can be known as "Young innocent minor"
The warnings are there for a reason to help show you are trying to keep minors from reading said fanfic. It is also a part of the rules. No, it doesn't stop some, but those that do read will eventually be dealt with accordingly when they are found.

Although it is possible for minors to peek into things they are not supposed to, the site and staff are also incredibly diligent in monitoring those activities. It does not take us long to find out, and the admins respond quickly and severely to such behaviors.
There are reasons behind the "NO YIM" warnings. It is part of the site's rules. Anything that is not minor appropriate (such as a forum post) must be labelled as such. The users are only doing what they have been asked to do.
Regardless of what other sixteen year olds are able to access off site, on Dokuga we are incredibly strict about minor's accessing inappropriate material.

As one of the site admins (even though I'm retired), we have ways to track minors who read material they shouldnt' be reading.
As a reiteration, these are our age restrictions.
Nobody on the site under 13
Nobody in chat under 14
M material can be read by people 16 and over
MA material can be read by people 18 and over.
Our fanfiction admins read EVERY single story on this site and so if you're using explicit language but labelling it as M because your'e between 16 and 18 years old, we will tell you it's not allowed.
The general rule of thumb is simple:
If you are caught writing a story you are too young to write, the story will be deleted, you will be warned, and the story is not allowed to be reposted on dokuga ever.
if you are caught reading a story you shouldn't, you will receive ONE warning and automatically be put on our tracking list. If you are caught a second before you're allowed to read that story, then you're done on the site and banned. You are not allowed to make an ew account. We have ways of checking that too, and then we will IP ban or get in touch with your ISP as these are rules we take very seriously.
So easiest thing ot do is if it says don't read, then don't read And then we'll all get along

Unless every single person to reads fanfiction on Dokuga is registered, chances are there are underage trolls. x3 It's impossible to tell just by an I.P address -- though, if they are registered, I get how it's controllable, unless they aren't being honest in their age. I was just curious how things like that became regulated, and how it was detectable.

Oh we know some slip through the cracks. We're not infallible and pefect. But we're vigilent at the same time. We average catching one minor per day. However, we also know that for every one we catch, there's probably 20 reading something they shouldn't. But we do our best and better than most sites.

Lol, sorry I couldn't help it, let me sing a line YIM means.... "Young, Impressionable, and insecure teenage girls". It doesn't have the marble part.
