These rules will be put into effect on January 10, 2010.

Any messages you have on the server that are outside of the guidelines listed below will be deleted.

Here are the new guidelines about personal messages:

• Messages sent to Trash will be deleted after seven days.


• Read messages will be deleted after fourteen days.


• Unread messages will be deleted after thirty days.


• Archived messages will be deleted after sixty days.

However, you'll still receive e-mail alerts containing the message contents of a message, so if you are away for some reason and can't sign in for over a month, you'll still receive the message in the form of an email alert.

Additionally, we've added a small widget to the site that will give you a flashing notice when you have unread messages.


We've also added a new option where you can save your personal messages by emailing the contents of your archive to yourself.

To save your old personal messages:

1. Send all the messages you want to save to the Archive.


2. Check all the messages on the page that you want to save. If you click to a new page, your checked choices will be lost, so click to view all or do one page at a time.


3. Click the small icon under the checkboxes that has the small disk on it.

We are enacting these new rules to contend with the growing size of the personal message database. It simply isn't practical for the table to continue to grow at the rate that it has. At this point, we have almost 70,000 messages sitting there, and if we continue to exercise no rules to curb its size, it will eventually affect the performance and affordability of the site.
