So, the reason for the web site being down was because... of math. [1]

The older networking equipment that the web host used had an upper limit of 512000 for the number of routes that it could hold. Within the past couple days the Global Internet BGP routes have surpassed that number.

This, as you can see, caused all sorts of havok.
