This is a mystery series set in Japan's Heian period, 794-1185. Good descriptions of the "human" side of life, clothing, decorum, hierarchy, superstitions, etc. I stumbled across it in the library while heading over to Inuyasha manga. The short story that started it is located here.

The first book is Rashoman Gate by I. J. Parker

I finished the first book, and am well into the second (The Hell Screen). I am entranced!

Arrg! I was wrong! The first book is called The Dragon Scroll. I hate it when I read a series out of order... Oh well, it has been good anyway...
