You quoted and replied to your own comment, which I then deleted. That is one method of thread bumping. It put your response to your own post at the top of the posts again, which is not allowed.

A beta can be many things...

Most betas will look your story over for problems with grammar, spelling, punctuation and the like. Some will go so far as to offer suggestions as to plot and story direction. Many will offer a 'sounding board' to bounce ideas off. It all depends on what a writer needs and what the beta feels able to offer.
