I wonder, what's so cool about "hashtag"? By cool, I mean, people who want to SEEM cool, keep saying "hashtag" all the time. And naming their children "Hashtag". Now, the characters on soapoperas who are supposed to be so hip are randomly inserting the word "hashtag" into conversations. That's where my husband heard it, and when he asked me what it meant, all I could say was that it was some kind of internet thing. Can anyone out there bring me up to speed on why the heck the "hashtag" is of cultural importance?

Seriously? Gee now that is odd. Could be an 'Americanism' or just all round 'slang'. I dunno. I've never heard that being used where I live, although, I'm also not even sure what a 'hashtag' is on the keyboard XD. I know what a 'hash' is being the '#' key, but a 'hashtag'? Is that like what - #-???

# hashtags originated with Twitter, I believe, and are used in Google Plus, Tumblr, Facebook and other places.

Wikipedia says this:

"Hashtags provide a means of grouping such messages, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it."

It's like a metadata tag which allows you to find similar messages. Unless you use those services, though, you wouldn't necessarily know what it was all about. Lately, it's become a craze whereby people use the word "hashtag" as though it was something cool to reference. Myself, I could live without it.

I think people are crazy. However, it is a hashtag only if in front of a letter or words, like this #Dokuga. It is a number sign if in front of a number, like this #1FS.
I've always believed that you can only use it on Twitter though.

What in the world? I've never even heard of this word let alone hearing it being used so commonly.

And here I was thinking that I was the only person left who doesn't use Twitter. I'm glad to see there are still others who are not addicted to it.

Hashtags are so annoying. They've actually came from twitter and has begun to take over every social network imaginable i.e Facebook, Instagram, GOOGLE. Its everywhere. The main reason I oppose to the hashtag movement is because people have incorporated them into their speech. So sad..

Ten or fifteen years ago, when everyone started using the term "gender", when no one used it prior to that, it was used to replace the word "sex", much like I believe Victorians referred to the legs on chairs as "limbs", because "legs" was just too racy. See, I could make up a theory to explain that terminology. But "hashtag", not so much. Does anyone have an example of how "hashtag" would be incorporated into a sentence? Does it actually, like, mean something specific?

I detest twitter. Which is why I don't have one. Social media has us WAY too involved in everyone's personal business. However, the last hashtag on that video made the whole thing worth it hahaha

Im hoping this craze will pass by quickly. The hashtag is getting sooooo annoying. My brother does it all over fb and i just want to smack him upside the head and be like WTF?!?! Like calling each other bro.....thats getting old quick too.
