In the Bahamas, where hurricanes are a way of life, it's traditional to throw a Hurricane Party when you're holing up against the storm. Basically, you bring your friends and as much rum as you can, dig down in the best shelter you have, and have a rowdy good time while waiting for it to go away.
You still get hit by a hurricane, but you have rum.
I'm just sayin'.
(The ironic bit is I just left the Bahamas a week before the storm hit it, but it's followed me up north anyway...and I left all my rum on the island >_< ).

I already met Irene, but 'she' was Cat 1 when she passed by. Cause lots of damage because it rained a lot. There were many landslides. So, yes, please be careful!
I hope everything goes well in your place Daniella, and Sky!

I hope everyone going to deal with it now don't have to worry about it too much. I just noticed the change in path. (I should have kept a closer eye. I live in Florida and tend to need to keep up with those things.)
Last time I checked the course show us in the picture... which was a while back. So, I hope all those in the path now will be all safe and enjoying themselves, rather than worrying about it. ^.^ if your electric goes off, remember blow torches are awesome for making soup. Buckets are good for collecting water.

The rain is just starting to smatter NYC. We've had NY1 on since yesterday afternoon and it's been a little surreal 'cause you could actually see it moving in- they were reporting live from Coney Island and it started raining there while nothing here, about 10-15 minutes later someone was reporting in from lower Manhattan and as she was talking it started raining there and within ten minutes of seeing that was when the rain started outside of our window over in Queens.
We've got all our 'batten down the hatches' supplies now I'm just hoping if we lose power it doesn't last too long 'cause it doesn't take much for my kids to get bored out of their skulls and start climbing all over me :/. What I'm really worried about is my 85 year old grandmother who lives in the house downstairs and my older next door neighbor that has to have the aid of a ventilator to help her breathe while she's sleeping. If the power cuts out I don't know what they (as in her family) are going to be able to do for her.

Things aren't too bad here in Virginia. Lots of wind and rain, but as far as I can tell, no major damage. Of course, Irene isn't technically in Virginia yet... so we'll see. But Cat1 should be nothing major.

lol did you forget Ike?! Ike was far worse than what you should be getting with Irene. Then again maybe you didn't live near the gulf in TX during Ike. lol We were just outside Galveston when he hit and were out of power for two weeks. Nutters! Be safe everyone.

ah, You missed all the fun then! Sewage lines bursting into the streets. Buildings washed out to sea. Water mains spewing out. Vagrants and Vandalizers gallor. Not to mention NO gas ANYWHERE, no food, no water (unless it was dirty and flooding your house and car)
good times! lol

I have a feeling it won't be as bad as the nedia makes it out to be. NYC's been through worse. There was Hurricane Gloria back in '85 when I was 9 and that storm was Category 2 when it reached my backyard. But better to be safe than sorry.

I remember that one! It cracked the top half of a tree at the end of our block clean off, but the wind and everything was so loud that no one even heard the tree hit the ground. We were all surprised when we came out the next day and saw a tree laying out in the street O.o

It's just starting to pick up here. The rain isn't heavy right now but the winds are getting stronger. The worst of it isn't supposed to hit us until much later but we'll see what happens. I don't think it is going to be quite as bad as they were predicting but it's still not going to be pleasant

well i live in Charlotte NC so we're only getting alot of wind so far but it'll probably start raining either later this evening, or in the middle of the night, plus we haven't been hit since hugo so there isnt much worry here besides flood damage
