i would have to say mine would be poor grasp of grammar, and the use of WAY too many commas. it's a rare day when i can read a fic without having to rewrite it in my head as i go along.
not to say most fics are bad, though. the english language is known as the second hardest language in the world to learn with its many variances and inconsistencies. (e.g. i before e, except after....) so i can't really blame people; i can only blame my own anal retentiveness.
another thing that bugs me is when people mix up the usage of "past" versus "passed". if you're unsure about which word to use, bust out a dictionary or thesaurus; i find that always helps when stuck in a rut.
my final pet peeve is dialogue. i do not believe that the use of conjunctions in speech became popular until the last century or two, so i highly doubt Sess would be talking saying "I'm" or "don't". I always rewatch period movies just to get the speech patterns right. Now, to have someone like InuYasha using those terms is much more acceptable to me, only because he's much younger than Sess and hangs around Kags all the time. Sess was likely born centuries before Sengoku Jidai, so in my estimation, that would make his speech patterns much older.
perhaps i may be going a bit too far, but these are my personal pet peeves. i don't like leaving negative reviews, so if i don't like something, i just move on to the next fic. those that i do like i always review when i can.

lol that totally reminds me...
if you're going to use a flashback, PLEASE stay in the correct tense!!!
and if you're going to write in 1st, 2nd or 3rd person, please continue using that tense!! i can't stand it when people use present tense with a past tense in the same sentence or paragraph. it's aggravating to read.

Well, I think there is an inherent issue here that includes both poorly written citrus (mmm... manstaff) and more grievously, the use of rape without any of the all too real consequences. That of course is the sad lack of sexual experience shared by the people who write these fics.
These girls haven't had a real boyfriend or are abstinent for whatever reason. Unfortunately, they turn to hentai anime and porn to fill the void left by their inexperience. All of the poor usage of words and the use of non-psychologically scarring rape are all quite prevalent in hentai and porn.
But, most hentai and porn is geared for men and not women. And it is most certainly not an accurate representation of what satisfying sex is like. To these writers though, without actually having good sex, they can only believe it is what they watch.

Wolfye P, I completely agree with you. I hate it when they use "contractions" (I think that's what you meant, conjunctions are "and" or "but," something that links) in Sesshomaru's speech. It's annoying, his speech patterns are older and its the fact that he normally has such a high rank in fics, usually a lord, and the speeches of those positions are usually more formal and elevated, especially in a public setting.
Mamasama, I'm quite the opposite with lemons. I hate long lemons...it's like I know what's going where and what happens after that so get to the point. I'm more interested in the emotion/actions that precede and follow it than the actual act. I think there is like only one long lemon I've ever liked and didn't skip through...

LadyBattousai - I think you're spot on. I've read so many fics with descriptions of sex that didn't seem to come from any realistic experience of sex at all. I haven't had a gazillion partners, but I can definitely tell when someone has entirely taken romance novels/porn/hentai as a source for descriptions of sex. It often worries me that so many MA stories are also obviously written by under 18s. I know there's no way to stop it really, because they can also check out explicit books at the library, but to be writing it without any real experience seems odd.

We're a part of a culture that places a bigger taboo on sex than violence. I suppose there is a considerable amount of excitement regarding writing about something that you're not allowed to do. Not to mention, there are plenty of readers who are as inexperienced as they are and so encourage them to write such... crap.
The other aspect of rape that makes it prevalent is the easy lemon placing. You can have a lemon as soon as like if you have one character rape another. There's no romance necessary. No build up. Just raw sex.

Ahh lemons...a well-written one stays in my head for days; a poorly written one makes me want to claw out my eyes. Fortunately I'm well practiced at clicking that useful back arrow.
As far as the language used, I think it entirely depends on context. And honestly some of the gratuitously flowery metaphors or the overused phrases are more difficult to read than something more crass if in a certain context.

You guys have listed most of my worst peeves...japanese words in fanfiction drive me nuts, unless, it's a term without a true english equivalent--eg, the name of some object or cultural facet (japanese articles of clothing, traditions, etc). There, using the japanese term is appropriate. But substitituing perfectly regular everyday words--hello, yes, please, etc--with japanese ones just wrecks the flow of the story and quickly becomes annoying.
And yes, there is little worse than waffy rape scenes. I think the prevalance of these is due, in part, to the overall confusion between love/lust that I see all too often in less experienced writers (eg, they see each other, get all hot and bothered, do it, and realize that my gosh, they're madly in love!).
The "rape fantasy" is a psychologically documented phenomenon--by rape fantasy I mean the mental visualizing of a faux rape scenerio (with onself as the victim) as a turn-on. Many women (and men) find themselves aroused by the "rape fantasy", whether they want to be or not, but most mature individuals recognize that the fantasy has absolutely no connection whatsoever with realities of rape, and no one who uses the rape fantasy actually desires to be raped. But I think that because of this psychological phenomenon some authors, especially young and inexperienced ones, turn towards the rape fantasy when writing their stories without really understanding it...the rape fantasy is purely an idealized sexual fantasy. NOT a romantic fantasy! (Rape itself is, of course, an act of violence more than sex, but we're only talking about the 'fantasy' ). You want to write an erotic rape story, fine, whatever floats your boat, but you cannot plausibly write a romantic one. No matter what characters you use, it will not only be unbelievable, it will be distasteful.
And porn-star style sex also is a pet peeve of mine. I can't imagine a virgin Kagome in the midst of her first sexual experience screaming "OH YES! FUCK MY WEEPING PUSSY, BIG DOG! FUCK IT WITH YOUR MAN-MEAT!"
Sends me running for the back-button like nobodies business.

Has the term 'pussy juice' been spotted in fanfiction? Yes, unfortunately.
Even worse, it's been uttered here on Dokuga.com.
Kagome angrily answered, “Inappropriate is having a face covered in pussy juice. It doesn’t get much more lewd than that.”
I DIIIIIIID IT! IT WAS ME!

Yeah, I've only read a couple of crack fics. But really, I guess I hold them to a different standard than I hold serious, drama or action-adventure type stories.
And yeah, who the hell DID make Sesshoumaru a cruise ship gigolo? *lookes suspiciously at Posessed*

I hate vulgar words period. I think it just is tacky. Especially in lemons. There is no reason to use the "f" word every paragraph. It reminds me of when i was 15 and my mother decided that I could swear now if i so pleased. I did for like three days and then realized how silly i sounded.

Ok Miss Kagura, you have to tell me what story you wrote that in. That was quite funny actually!
And yeah, I aggree with Nobody. Over use of profanity is a turn off to me. Of my favorite stories, I don't think that any of them made gratuitous use of profanity.

LOL. I think nearly every single peeve of mine has been mentioned in this thread.
Another pet peeve of mine would be bad formatting. I understand that posting can be difficult at times and it doesn't turn out right. However, if it's all scrunched up with no paragraphs, you can't expect me to read it. It's one thing when the author is in the process of fixing the format, but I've seen author's just leave the bad formatting as is.
I have to totally agree that many lemons written out there are by young inexperienced writers. I fall into the inexperienced category but even I can recognize a well written lemon that's more realistic. Most of the time I skip over the lemon by the younger writers, but not before at least giving it a chance. The truth of the matter is that I just can't get through the scene and would rather move on with the plot. Not to mention, I've seen these young writers use lemons as a lure to get more readers. There's a marked difference between warning about mature content and an obvious call for attention by saying lemon.

I have a question do you find your selves skipping lemons? I do. I hate long lemons all i know is i'm pretty sure even with all the forplay it never takes that long. Its so sad, but i have caught myself skipping a boring lemon to get to the plot on the other side.

Nobody. I guess, the question is: What do you consider a long lemon? I have seen a lemon that was approximately two, to three chapters long! I am am not exaggerating! There was no way I was about to read all of that. And, the writter is a fantastic writter, a bit longwinded, but a fantastic writter.
For me, the perfect lemon, is not too long, and not too short. I find it slightly annoying when lemons are super short, and I tend to skip through when they are too long.
So, just for my own curiosity, What do you consider a long lemon? Anyone else, please feel free to answer this as well.

Depends on the context. In a multi-chapter story only a couple pages as most, my personal POV. But for one that is basically PWP (Porn without a point) the sky is the limit. I just did one (not posted here because of err... pairing is the best way i can put it) that the entire thing was like 6 chapters long but the lemon was 4 of those. So depends on the story and what kind it is and how much a part of the plot the lemons in it are.
