There was an episode of Ranma 1/2 where him and Akane have to deal with this demon, I think it looked like a panda if I remember right. The demon itself was believed to be evil, though I believe it turned out to just be lonely. Anyways, the box it was kept in was warded making the box safe for handling and I believe that would also allow it to go on holy ground.

If you want an easy explainable canon plot, you could have Grandpa find the...insert item here...on the shrine, or bring it to the shrine, and the seal is broken by one of them. Think the third fang or Noh mask.

Hm, that's a really good idea too. I've already written about three pages to it, and I think I know how I could add that idea into the story(the idea of it being contained into a box or sealed into an item and then grandpa bringing it in)

Sounds like the Cwn Annwn, black dogs associated with the wild hunt, in the british isles. here is a wiki link, if that helps, they are also called Cairn hunds to many locals in Ireland and Scottish Highlands, they are considered a type of Cu Sith or fairy hound though most Cu Sith are white with red spots, or green with red eyes. hopes this helps,

It seems to me that the Black Shuck is perhaps the closest on of all. and there might be some good ideas in there for the story as well. like how to integrate into the plot.

I thought that may have been one of the videos where I first saw/heard of the creature because I believe it was animal planet that I first heard of it. But, that was a new one.
