I can't remember what this creature is called, I think it's a hell hound, but I'm not 100 percent sure.

I'm going to write a one-shot with this creature in order to get back into a writing mood, but cannot find the name of it anywhere(I even tried google)

but here is some info about it that I remember:

It's a black canine.

It has a red eyes.

If you see it once, it's good luck.

If you see it twice, it's bad luck.

If you see it three times, you will die.

If anyone remembers the name of this creature, or if it is a hellhound, please let me know! It's bugging the crap out of me

I have never watched nor read Harry potter. So I doubt it, unless that thing was based off of the creature I'm talking about

I think it's also called a "grim" like in Harry Potter... or a "Church grim"

The Church Grim, a spectral black dog, which inspired
The Grim, an omen of death in the form of a black dog in the novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Hope this helps

kind of. Uhm I remember when I was watching that show 'The Haunted' a few days ago they covered a story on it, and said there was a tale of the black dog roaming a park in a certain area. But I don't think it was near a church.

In other stories I remember hearing about it, it can be anywhere(cementeries or just anywhere)

I've always ever heard of big black spectral canines as Grims...even before Harry Potter. But then again, I wouldn't think of anything else to call them anyhow.

Tales of lone travellers encountering ghostly hounds have haunted the British Isles for centuries. “If a man shall meet a black dog once, it shall be for joy; and if twice, it shall be for sorrow; and the third time, he shall die,” or so the folk stories go.

Hm, interesting. Thank you for the links, the second one didn't work. The first one did, but none of the dogs mentioned in that sounded exactly like the one I'm looking for. I might just end up calling it a black dog in the story. Thanks for the help

you get more info if you make sure the (ghost) is in there as well. Glad it helped, the second link just talked about how people used to bury a big black dog at the northern side of a newly erected church to protect the church from the Devil...very interesting I thought

I think you are looking for the Black Dog, though you may have been thinking of the name Cerberus, which is a name of one of the Hellhounds in Hades. If I remember my mythological correctly, Black Dogs are a kind of Hellhound.

Ah, you're writing a story involving it then. I do agree, the Black Dog is a rather...uninspiring name for a scary tale. Maybe you can just take creating liberties and use the legend but give it a more chilling name.

It would losely be called a Hellhound for what dog you are talking about, it goes by many names since it is referenced in Irish, Norse, English, etc. myths.

That link actually provided more of what I was thinking of, I know the dog wasn't headless. So I think(when the story came to America) some of those stories may have just been mixed with one another. Now I have to think of a name instead of 'black dog'

@Hairann- I know it isn't Cerberus, because unless I'm getting everything mixed up I believe that specific hellhound has three heads and guards the souls(or something of that sort) I do agree that the black dog is probably a different kind of hellhound then Cerberus.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far it's helping in clearing my thoughts, now I have another question. Even though this specific creature is generally seen in other countries, since it has made its way over to America(being seen) will it be believable to be seen in Japan too?

Re:I can't remember what this creature is! 14 Years ago Karma: 54
If you work it right, it's believable. Not sure if you've read my story Mates, but I added in the Black Plague, and though it is the right time for a small break out in Japan, I believe I mentioned about the ships from English which of course carried the rats. This gives the readers a believable line of story to follow so it doesn't sound way out of place.

If you line it up so there's a reason for a European creature to be there, such as it followed someone over in a boat or there was an European artifact brought over that was connected with one, you should be okay. As long as there is some explanation.

the first link I gave you showed there were many places such myths and legends of a black dog existed...I don't see why you can't work one into your story based in Japan.

here's a link that describes the black dog visually if that helps at all

I'm with Hairann. So long as you make a valid attempt to give believable reasons for such-and-such whatever to be there, then you're golden in my book.

Re:I can't remember what this creature is! 14 Years ago Karma: 23
I know how I'm going to get it back to the past, kind of. I'm working on it right now. So here is what I'm thinking on getting it to Japan(these are just ideas mind you, so don't be afraid to see 'that makes no sense!')

From my knowledge of the supernatural, or spirits is that if they want to they can easily attatch themselves to person and travel to wherever they are traveling too. How I am seeing the black dog is that, in a way it is a 'ghost' so I'm thinking of having it attatch itself to one of it's 'victims' and this individual goes to Japan. It then detached from that person and beings to roam Japan once there.

Now mind you, this is just an idea. I'm sure I could come up with something better, or polish this idea. But it was the first thing that came to me.

Also since the black dog is seen as evil, would it be able to get on Kagome's shrine? I don't think it will, but then if it's able to get on churches maybe it could? hmm..

Re:I can't remember what this creature is! 14 Years ago Karma: 11
church dogs were supposed to guard the church (or shrine in this case) against evil...whether it be human or spiritual...just so you know...maybe a church grim imbued with a jewel shard...?

hmmm that's a good idea. But then Kagome would easily be able to sense it, if it had one with it. Ahh so many choices!

Question: In Manga canon, does the Higurashi Shrine actually have any power, or is it essentially a place of prayer? Like, are there examples in the Manga where the Shrine actually did something to protect Kagome (or anyone)?

Re:I can't remember what this creature is! 14 Years ago Karma: 23
Hm you know,I honestly don't remember reading anything where it did. Since many demons have been able to go on the shrine/come out of it. One would think that if the shrine did have protection against evil that it would have killed the demons as soon as they materalized(sp)

Though it has been a long time since I have read the manga, so I may be missing an event, if it did happen. So I second your question If anyone knows the answer to that, it would be very appreciated (goes off to research this question too)

I think it may just be a place of prayer, and for events.

It would allow you to stick closer to canon and permit your Black Dog monster to roam the shrine if you wanted.
