No more 'mature' manga? 14 Years, 7 Months ago

So, did anyone else here hear or read about the ban on 'mature' manga? Onemanga is blocking or deleting all of their mature manga, and mangafox.com is going to do it too(I think, I know it's getting censored).
One of my favorite manga series, Wolf Guy - Wolfen Crest is starting to get censored now too. I personally hope the latest chapter of this manga was kind of a 'smart-arse' reply to the parents that wrote the people that scan and translate the manga and complained about them 'corrupting' their children by showing mature manga online.
Because if not, then it totally ruined the series. I mean yeah, the manga series and most mature manga have a reason for being marked mature(whether it be nudity, gore, violence etc) but most of the mature manga has a really good or interesting storyline/plot.
It bugs me when parents blame others for their own irresponsibility. I know if my children ever look at mature manga when they are younger than 18, they will get blocked from the computer for a few months. But still my question is; why weren't the children being monitored by the parents so they wouldn't look at mature manga? How is that anyone else's fault but the parents, when there are warning before each chapter for the mature content.
Ack, sorry this just really upset me. But, how does everyone else feel about this 'blocking the mature manga from online reading sites' thing? Do you think it's fair?

It's pathetically easy to lie about your age online though, or to click OK without reading the warning.
Parents SHOULD be more watchful and block sites that would be offensive. It sucks how the blocks will also block sites that are medical like breast cancer or something, but is that really a high price to pay when it's either that or a kid runs into porn? Ugh, one idiot whines and we all suffer.

Unfortunately most parents are either too busy or too lazy to watch what their children are viewing online and expect the rest of the world to do it for them. We have the same problem on online games, there was one time a young girl started a huge fight within the guild because one of our adult members were cussing even though there is a filter for that and it was her and her parents responsibility to make sure it was filtered.
And not that I am defending these idiot parents, but these sites are a bit lapse in their controlling who sees what. Now I know there is the big red warning before you even start reading the manga and many inserts that warn again, but sites like Manga fox, I don't even have to have an account to read mature. Now grant it, I am well over 18, turned 27 this month, but if I can read without proving I'm 18 so can those who aren't.
They need to add one of those 'click if you are over 18' things when you set up an account and make sure people can't read any manga without one. Of course it wouldn't be perfect, but it would help cover their butts a bit.
Now the logical part of this aside, I'd really hate to lose my mature manga or have everything be censored. I am an adult and I should be free to read what I want and it should never be affected by idiot children and their idiot parents. If they don't want their children reading stuff they shouldn't be in the first place, then there are filters for that, they can watch over their shoulder or take away the internet completely. They shouldn't be spending so much time online making them targets for predators anyways.

Arrgh! I've just noticed that Ubel Blatt and Vinland Saga have both been suspended!
Are they just blocking out anything pertaining to "the sex", or are they blocking out the violence as well? Because if they take away Until Death Do Us Part from me, bad things are going to happen.
Also - Can anyone recommend sites that do not censor?

They are also blocking the one's that contain violence(or a lot of violence).Or pretty much anything that is rated 'mature' including the one's that have cuss words and such.
As for sites that are not censoring, I don't think: www.mangareader.net/ or manga.animea.net/ censor their manga(and hopefully they won't) But none of the mature manga have been updated yet so it's hard to tell.
Also @ Hairann- I agree that they should add the 'click if you are over 18' thing. That way like you mentioned, they wouldn't get that much heat for minor's reading mature manga.

Hmm, for one thing I've often seen things that are rated '18+ only' and the like a bit pointless. Age isn't any way to measure the maturity of a person, though it certainly is the easiest. I was certainly into things that were 18+ when I was 16 or so, which brings me to another point: Yes, I agree there should be something you click before reading 'verifying' that you are 18. However if the 'child' is not 18 and still clicks past these... How about we blame the supposed child? Not the parents who whatever they do cannot control every single action that their offspring make, not the website who likely has their hands full just trying to run something that satisfies everyone else. But the one who who knowingly went and viewed something marked as mature when they were not over 18.
Parents need to stop blaming websites and start talking to their children about these things instead.
I really hope that they come up with a good way to let people still read mature manga if they want to and that still satisfies whoever is giving them trouble over this.

I don't really read any mature series but I still think it's unfair and sort of stupid to take it away from everyone for a few bad parents. I catch my son when he's older doing that stuff he'll really wish he hadn't been. I dunno, it's just bizarre to me why people freak out so much without first doing reasonable things on their own end. Resolve issues at the lowest possible level folks.

Censorship really bums me out. Plus, if I were a parent, I'd be a lot more concerned about how common sexting and other stuff young people actually do INTERACTIVELY online than just viewing something racy or violent.

It's very east to say "If I were a parent..." but much more difficult to be one.
Let me be clear, this should be a parent's responsibility. Choices have to be made, do you cut your work hours, which means less money and less things for your family, in order to be able to do things like monitor what that family is doing more closely? You want your kids to have everything your didn't, but at what cost? Many parents want to trust their kids completely, thinking they have this great, open relationship. They want to be their kid's friend instead of their parent. I sat down with my kid a few years ago and told him he had plenty of friends and that I was put here to make sure he grew up to be the great man that I know he could be, even if that means he's not happy with my decisions for him. (apparently I nag... who knew? ) When he started getting into anime and manga, I read and watched them all with him. I wanted to know what he liked about them, and so I could monitor them. We talked a great deal about why certain things should not be read or watched.
Anyway, I'm rambling... The internet is still a very intimidating place to many parents. I think they feel that they can censor it like the tv, call in a complaint and eventually the offending item is gone, or atleast behind a fuzzy screen. These parents have yet to realize that there is more then one site that has the same images and they can't/won't all be willing to go through what One Manga is doing. And think about it... if a kid really wants to see something, they'll figure out a way.
My oldest has been fairly open... I don't think my little girl will be as easy... God help me, she's more like me then I care to admit.

I think kids will do things "wrong". It's part of growing up. Every boy has sneaked peeks at daddy's porno magazines, and if all else fails, the lingerie cataloges. Library boards debated if they should allow James Joyce's books on the shelves, and school children felt like they had scored if they got their hands on them. Girls made out with boys in the back seat of the car, or behind the barn, and life went on. I put things like reading mature manga in the same category. When kids are taking naked pictures of themselves and sending them to faceless entities they don't even know, or hooking up with them online and arranging to meet them at the corner McDonalds, THAT'S WHAT I FIND SCARY!

Pretty soon a manga or anime will be banned for a showing a child hugging his/her parent. I'm suprised that Inuyasha's not banned for Miroku copping a feel on every female's butt or for showing a strategically covered but naked Kagome or Inuyasha. I wonder how long it will be until the morality police has all manga and anime sites closed completely down? Or (perish the thought) our beloved fanfic sites?

Thank you Sugar0o and PRVN for those suggestions! I'll check them out in a bit.
I'm not going to get involved with the debate over censorship, but I think that there has always been reading material that parents found questionable.
Just going back to my childhood in the 80's - there was Heavy Metal magazine, various comics, etc. Hell, I remember owning a risque pick-a-path book series. My mom hated this stuff, but never tried to take it away. She would just force the occasional "talk" that I would want to run screaming from.

Well, from what my sons have said, I'd win an Olympic medal if there was a catagory for nagging. I just say that I've got to have some kind of hobby. But, my eldest son is nearing 13 and has already hinted around that he wants a laptop computer for christmas. He and I have a deal that if he gets one, I will know the passwords to emails and other things that he has. I've explained that it is not because I don't trust him, its because I don't trust that he won't receive things that he should not see. As a mom with 3 boys, I worry that they will be exposed to certain things, but it is my right as a parent to be the one to dictate what they see and what they don't. I feel that while some of these mangas may be a bit over the top, I would like to be the one to decide if my sons are able to read them. I should be the censor regarding my sons. These sites should have something that makes a person verify their age or something that would unlock questionable mangas, but not completely take them away. I'm going to miss Fushgi Yugi: Genbu Gaiden.

I think 'children' or 'minors' I guess would be the better term, start to notice things that would be marked at 'mature' when they 15 sometimes 16 years or older. I just don't understand why parents go off on these manga sites about 'mature' manga being on there, or the subjects inside the mature manga being there. When their children will see those things(gore, violence, sex and cuss words) sooner or later in their life(like others here have mentioned). School will probably be the main source for that. I'd rather have my children see these things, if they do, online than on the streets. Because it is a lot more dangerous on the streets, than online(Sometimes).
It's not that parent's need to be watching over their child's shoulder whenever they are using a computer. But that when setting up the internet access, they should filter out sites that may have adult content. I know school computers, or library computers do that.(Which results in sites such as ff.net and manga websites to be blocked because there is mature content mixed in) But still, if parents are so uptight about what their children may come across online, they should set up some rules. If the child brakes those rules, then they should be punished and access to the internet should be taken away.
I know there are some websites that look into the people joining, and that if they are not old enough to view the content of that site. They will be blocked from it, and not allowed to try again for a few months.(adultfanfiction.net is one of them, I think)
But I'm sure kids will come across worse, when watching television or even when they are in class at school or walking down the street. I mean, I get the idea that parents what to keep their child as 'innocent' as they can, for as long as they can. But keeping them so sheltered may also end up making them get hurt(emotionally or physically) later on in life. Just teaching them right from wrong is one of the best things to do.
I don't know, for subjects like this, or mature content. It really just depends on the parent, and how they raise their children(also the children themselves). Hovering over them, and watching their every move, can actually cause a child to act out more or do more things that would be considered bad. But with the filters they have on the internet, that can be set up by even a parent that isn't good with computers, the child can be given their space to do what they want, but they will still have some restrictions.(If that makes any sense ^^; )

Srsly T__T I love me some mature josei/shoujo manga. And all their bishie goodness. I love it so much I would be willing to pay a small fee with my credit card if that would *prove* I'm over 18 (which I am).
(Yeah, that makes me sound like a loser, but bishounen are my weakness )
Another idea is to find the scanlators website or IRC chat and download it directly from them. bakaupdates.com / mangaupdates.com is a very resourceful site.

I've read many of the forums on MangaFox and OneManga, and in truth it isn't the sites that made the decision to remove/censor any manga that was rated Mature, and both are currently going through their archives and reading every thing that was rated mature and are either censoring it or completely removing it, there might be a few that get put back unscathed but im not so sure it will happen.
There was an idiot who raised a fuss about sites who use Google Adsence, he singled out manga sites as well as YouTube for his examples, for knowingly showing child pornography in manga/anime, and this in turn caused google, in record time I might add, to force the sites to remove anything that was rated mature, unfortunately without the funding provided by adsence neither site would be able to stay open.
His claim was that the sites were violating the terms of use of Adsence by allowing mature material to be seen on the sites, and while that may be true, from what I saw he didn't have a full understanding of the US laws he was claiming the sites were violating in addition to the Adsence issue.
l7world.com/2010/04/google-sponsors-child-pornography.html
That is the article that started this whole mess, he has since banned replys to his post due to the flood of unhappy manga readers bashing him, but most of the replys are pretty interesting to read, and his replies to people often show just how ignorant he is. While it may be true that both sites did break their terms of use for google adsense, OneManga just became to lax in there supervision, and MangaFox was obviously pushing the limits, I believe they went about solving the problem the wrong way.
forums.mangafox.com/showthread.php?t=164426
This is the reply manga fox posted to the sudden loss of mature material.
www.onemanga.com/news/2010/04/30/mature-series-update/
www.onemanga.com/news/2010/04/27/mature-series-suspended/
And these are what OneManga has had to say so far.
I myself have decided to just go and download what manga I could, as it seems most of the ones I love the most won't be making a comeback unfortunately *cries for the loss of bishis*...Word of warning, everyone should watch out if the manga site you frequent uses ads hosted by google and they have mature manga, if they haven't been targeted yet they most likely will be in the near future...

I've never seen mangas turn kids into people who come into my ER with strange objects lodged in their rectum. But LITTLE kids need to be kept away from violence, lest they copy it and have another debacle like kids copying Power Rangers.
Better yet, parents should fragging SIT DOWN and explain fantasy and reality!
