Maybe Sesshomaru is the dog of all dogs so each dog has some sort of feature they have gained from him.

Or he could be a mixture of all three species mentioned above....

I don't think he has a specific breed per say because he's a demon but there are probably different dog demon clans with different colors most likely but not a specific breed of dog.

Of course if it is a story where Sesshomaru is an actual dog then it would make sense if he was some sort of a Japanese dog.

I apologize if this sort of question has popped up before, but I did not see it anywhere. I narrowed it down to three possibilities:

1) Saluki (most likely, only Sess is more muscular)
2) Shiba Inu (tail and body is accurate, but ears are not)
3) Samoyed (the body is similar, and the tail is fluffy like Sess's)

So which one do you think he most likely represents?

Even to a head does not come anything similar. I do not know that for a dog.

I read on wiki that Sessh, Inuyasha, and Inu-papa were Akita youkai. Of course, wiki could be wrong:P

XD I always thought Sesshoumaru looked like some sort of like a spaniel mix. *shrugs* Maybe it was cause of his ears... maybe a bit of German Shepard too.

I read that too ,only I remember it saying something about them being a ' Great Akita ' or ' Great White Akita ' . Of course I have seen another breed that resebles him and his father's true forms. Hm, it may be Drentsche Patrijshond. Though those ones are usual white with brown spots.

or Stabyhoun, Kooikerhondje these are the only dutch dog breeds I can think of that might look like that. Though from what I know is, they are not pure white and usually have light colored spots.

Sesshoumaru and His father look simialr to the Great Pyrenees Mountain dog, the Maremma Sheepdog, the Kuvasz, the Akbash Dog, or the Polish Tatra Sheepdog. Look up pictures of them and you will see what i mean. I think that Sesshoumaru and his father are actually similar to Youko Kurama in that they are Spirit animals. If you look at pictures of Sesshoumaru's father closely it looks like he has multiple tails.

I always thought they weren't real dogs at all but similar to koma-inu. Koma-inu, or shishi, are a sort of mythical 'lion-dog' that was taken from Chinese culture and carvings of them can be seen all over East Asia. Carvings of koma-inu look similar to Sesshoumaru and his mother's tranformed states, and representations of them in Noh theater and Kabuki are very similar to Sesshoumaru's human state. If you look here, you'll see how similar the appearance of a kabuki/Noh rendition of a shishi is to Sesshoumaru.

But I think the relation Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, and the Inu-no-Taishou have to any real or mythical dog is very light. Rumiko Takahashi didn't heavily research every aspect of the time period to create her work, it's a little obvious that she was going on her general knowledge of the past and just making stuff up as she went. But, I think when she was making stuff up, she was pulling from cultural images, so when she thought of demonic/otherworldy dogs, a shishi was probably the first thought that came to her mind.

I believe you are onto something looking at the video and images of Koma-inu's on Yahoo they bear a striking resemblance to Sesshomaru and his father mainly in body and tail but also a bit on the face and ears though the muzzle resembles some of the more recently done statues with the longer muzzles instead of the short almost pug nose look. I think his father resembles the older statues of the Koma-Inu's more than Sesshomaru , Sesshomaru has a more of the look of the modern Koma-Inu statues less fur/cloud looking hair on the body a lot, but that could also be because he is young basically a puppy compared to his father.

I think Sesshomaru's dog species mostly resembles the Akbash because of their similar body dispositions. That tail is very long like Sess's and the chest is muscular, according to the dog breed description.

I thought so to or a breed that is basically cousins with the Akbash alot of which are a bit more muscular in the chest then the Akbash.

It's got to be the Samoyed, i mean he is equally fluffy. plus they are an ancient breed...so would make sense

You know I never really thought about what kind of dog breed Sesshomaru is. That is a very interesting question.

hrmmm...He looks as though he could be some sort of Akita or Kishu mix...but then again, he does display attributes of several different breeds...I think since he is considered such a high level demon in terms of pedigree and strength, that he is a vast mixture of different kinds...making him a superior sort of breed above any other. ^_^

This one looks the closest to Sesshomaru in my opinion. He is so fluffy, large, and white.

I think she probably used bits and pieces of other dogs to create him as her own type of dog breed to make him fictional.

However this white Sheppard lol looks close to me, if only his ears were floppy.

and i gues if he had more fluff like this Sheppard, like a cross between the two but make the ears floppy and little longer.



They are both white Swiss Sheppard's but ones more fluffy then the other lol. I want to get one even though the ears are up and name it Sesshomaru lol.
