If you watch some of the episodes you can see he has small side burns.

Makes me wonder does that mean he has to shave, can he grow a beard? Cause most men grow facial hair, and if he has side burns wouldn't that means he would be able to also.

personally i think his side burn is only there to stop his stripe, if you look it doesnt continue to his ear, or behind it. if it does then that happens under his hair... its one of those RT oddities.

As an artist i like the idea that the stripe curves over his ear or behind it b/c the way RT draws it it just stops at his jaw line and hair line. but in true for its connected...

oh! here's a weird thing, ever notice, he has a sideburn but he doesn't have a nostril o_O

bwahaha, he doesn't even need a nostril to be able to smell over 9000x better than weak humans like us.

though, we'd be looking right up his nose, the animators probably figured that including a nostril wasn't very dignified.

I have pondered over whether Sesshomaru, and InuPapa, and Kouga had to shave. But either way, I don't really think that's a sideburn in the illustration. Isn't it more like a forelock, like InuYasha has, just most of it swept back into the main part of his hair because it's longer and straighter? My hair is long and mostly blunt-cut, and if I don't cut my forelocks, the better part of them tend to get mixed up with my other hair, and all that is left in front is a bit like in the picture of Sesshy. If I cut them off about shoulder length, they stay in front of my ears and stay separate from the hair in back like InuYasha's. I try to imagine the characters as realistically as possible, but not in live-action form, if that makes any sense at all. But as in real life, I avoid thinking about the actuality of some body parts, which usually includes nostrils...

All of Rumiko's characters have that actually. Except for the bald ones. (Ranma, Akane, Kagome, Miroku. It is usually hidden in the girls because they have longer hair though.)

It is very pronounced in the manga, and animators tend to skip over little details like that for simplicities sake.

I may have to agree with you there. They seem to be more of a forelock than sideburns. Mostly by the appearance.

CookieAsylum, I gave you karma for saying mutton-chops. It has reminded me greatly of "Mom and Dad Saves the World."

I think it is a natural sideburn or forlock which ever you choose. If you look at pictures of asian actors like Rain from Ninja Assassin, you can see that he has them.

I looked up some on the internet and someone had asked if asian males can grow a full beard. The answer that came back was that most asian men only grow around the mouth and chin. Very seldom do they grow in the cheek area. Also that it comes in at a late age, like 30 to 40 yrs old.

So if youkai age at a different rate than humans its possible that Sesshoumaru wouldn't have to shave until he reached the modern era.

Well you could consider the sideburns drawn on the characters baby hair. Even I as a female sport some fine hair in that area and it's usually more pronounced on a male.

Also, anime characters are hardly ever drawn with a nostril.

Hmmm I've seen alot of pic's with him drawn like Sephiroth.
I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of Sesshomaru dressed as a officer in Star Trek. Maybe The whole crew cast from Inuyasha.
