Prologue

The officer studied the woman huddled in the corner of the cell. She had been pretty, she could see that, but something had changed her. She was wearing a torn and stained blue dress, and obviously had been for awhile. Her black hair was matted, and soaked with blood.

"What's she in for?" She turned to the man standing behind her.

"Murder of Sesshoumaru Yanagi. They picked her up about a week ago. He's gone. She was hiding in an alley, and some kids walking by saw her. It's his blood on her."

"She doesn't look capable of murder. She can't be more than sixteen. Do we have an ID on her yet?"

"Kagome Higurashi. She's nineteen. Parents died in a car accident twelve years ago. She was taken in by an aunt, a Ms. Kaede Yurikago, who died of a heart attack about four years ago. Ran away from her foster home, and simply disappeared."

"How did she know Yanagi?"

"She was his girlfriend, apparently. They were dating for about two months, I guess."

The woman turned. "I've got to get downtown."

"Call me if anything new turns up." She nodded, and walked away.

"What could have driven you to do this, Kagome?"

She looked up. He was here again, like he always was. He would leave, and then be back an hour later, always asking her why.

"Miroku." The harsh whisper barely reached his ears, but he was satisfied.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Kagome."

She heard his footsteps leave.

"Sesshoumaru..."
