Seeing the Unseen by Sakura Hisakawa

Chapter 1

'Demons are not real. Demons are not real. Demons are not real.' Was the mantra that kept repeating in Kagome's head as she headed to her downtown office in Tokyo. The same mantra repeated everyday when she saw something inhuman, and or paranormal, whichever came first. It had been ten years since she had last been to the feudal era and she still convinced herself that it had been a horrible reoccurring nightmare that refused to go away.

Ten years of convincing herself that, she had a temporary lapse of mental sanity, even if it did last for three years. She looked behind her again to make sure that the male that she had saw earlier wasn't still following her and she sighed in relief, he wasn't. She would not dare tell anyone that she had been seeing things beyond the explainable for the past few years and neither would she talk to her mother about it. The woman kept asking her about this guy named "Inuyasha" and even though she had not been telling her mother of her dreams, she wondered if she was starting to sleep talk.

She walked through the crowded streets until she got to her building; she had to get to work if she would want to be paid. Walking through the double doors she came into contact with her secretary Fumi, who happened to be handling her patients, "Good morning Dr. Higurashi!" she called out. Kagome nodded at her and said nothing, not paying attention to the tall long dark haired male that was sitting by the elevator doors as if he was just waiting for someone.

She passed him with out acknowledgement and entered them pressing the button on the second floor not noticing his lecherous smirk and just as the elevator doors were closing, he left. She got to her part of the office, sat in her big lush chair, and sighed loudly. In just a few minutes, she would have to deal with her biggest problem yet, but the only thing bothering her now was a replay of her dream, that same dream that repeated over and over again...

~Flash back~

It was the night before the big wedding between Inuyasha and Kikyo and the lords from other parts of the country were there to congratulate the two and give Inuyasha gifts for the defeat of Naraku. She had just come from washing when Sesshoumaru in all of his glory ordered her to go fetch his "Halfling brother" she felt annoyance with being ordered around like that but complied grabbing her sweater for the chilly night.

With Shippou, Sango, and Miroku gone back to the rebuilt demon slayer village to reside, she had to walk alone and no one to talk to. "Of all the nights for those two to wander off, they choose this one." she huffed. She stumbled upon a risen root, fell on her knees, and stood up again only to glare at the offending piece of nature. She hated getting dirty right after she had taken a bath.

She came upon the clearing of the god tree and noticed the two in a lover's embrace naked against the bark of the old tree. "Inuyasha, what are you thinking about?" she asked. Kagome hid behind a tree and waited for the opportune moment for her to approach them. "I was thinking about getting you your soul back." He murmured against the crook of her neck. She smiled softly, "Silly, you know that my reincarnation has it what are you planning to do, kill her?" she asked. "If it gets your soul back then it will be done." He replied. Kikyo laughed coldly, "she's nothing more than a tool, I'm sure that she will not be missed." She sighed. "I can't wait." He said to the undead priestess.

Kagome was not sure if it was shock or just her willingness to see if the male would follow through with his threat, but she found that she could not move. After a few more seconds, she had found her strength and ran off making sure not to be detected. Getting back to the village she found that the lords were getting impatient, "Girl where is the half-breed." Sesshoumaru asked coldly. She stopped and looked at him numbly, "Go get him yourself." She spat and went into the hut and grabbed her belongings.

She would never be the fool again. To hell with the promise to be there for him, he had Kikyo now. When she exited the hut she found a slightly pissed Daiyoukai in front of her, she glared right back her not faltering as sapphire clashed with gold. Their eyes locked for a few more seconds, his eyes narrowed with something akin to hatred, and he walked off in the direction that she had just taken. 'Pompous asshole.' She walked off in the direction of the well and did not look back.

~Flashback End~

She hated that dream the most. She heard a knock at the door and looked to it. "Enter." She called out and saw that it was Fumi. Fumi smiled brightly at the Kagome and handed her the files that were currently in her hand, "Mr. Iwasaki is here for his nine o'clock appointment." Send him in." she said turning her back to the door. Yes, it had been ten years since Kagome last felt normal and the last that she had been able to smile.

"I am prescribing you some sleeping pills and some sedatives when you have panic attacks like that. Mr. Iwasaki, there are no such things as demons. They are only myths." Kagome said to the older male. Mr. Iwasaki looked at the young woman and huffed. "I am telling you, they are after me. They want me dead!" he said grabbing her shoulders. She pushed the elderly man away from her and tried her best not to hit the old man for his outburst. She quickly wrote down his prescriptions and handed him the piece of paper. He snatched it, "Some frigging help you are." He muttered as he left the room. Kagome sighed, 'This is going to be a long day' she thought to herself.

On her way home, Kagome saw a group of people and several police cars. She told herself it was none of her business but she still went, brushing past some of the other spectators. "Oh my frigging god! Look at all that blood!" someone yelled. Some of the women gasped and left the scene, "Eww look there's guts too!" the same person yelled. 'Who's giving that report?' Kagome wondered as she pushed through the crowd. "Sir! I told you you're not supposed to be back here!" an office yelled. Before she knew what was happening, a male ran into her and almost knocked her down. He caught her with graceful reflexes holding her gently. She caught his deep violet colored eyes for a moment and he smiled brightly at her, before she knew it, his lips were on hers. Then as soon as she felt it, he left righting her before running off.

Kagome touched her lips and blinked a couple of times and she felt her temper flare. "How dare that male!" she hissed under her breath. She turned forward, some of the spectators cleared the way for her, and she saw a sheet in front of the crowd as a failed attempt to keep the public from seeing the gruesome sight. She saw a severed old hand and the head of what looks to be her patient Mr. Iwasaki.

She stepped under the police tape to take closer inspection confirm that it was patient Mr. Iwasaki that had been killed. It looked like he had encountered a rabid animal. "Miss you are not supposed to be past the tapeline..." 'Demons are out to get me!' his voice rang in her head as she looked into the cold dead eyes of the male that she had been treating for the last week. Then she felt that tingling feeling again. The same feeling that she had in those dream right before she saw a demon. She shook her head and walked off. 'Demons are not real. Demons are not real. Demons are not real.'

"You sure that you don't want to come off as some delinquent? I mean you did just take her first kiss and when she finds out who you really are, you're dead meat." A feminine voice said over the receiver of the payphone. The male at the phone smiled nervously and scratched his head. "I'm sorry when I saw her I just couldn't help myself. I was so happy to see her." He said chuckling softly. There was a sigh and a long pause before the woman said anything else.

"Don't let it happen again." With that, she hung up in his face. 'Sure thing Sango dearest.' He thought as he placed the phone back on its cradle and walked away his long hair trailing behind him.
