Chapter One: The Lady of the East

-------------------------------------------------------------

"I still don't know why we have to join forces with that bastard!" Inuyasha screamed at his pack as he pointed toward his hated elder brother. His blood was reaching it's boiling point. The bastard had the nerve to come and suggest joining forces with HIS pack. The thing that really had him pissed off is that the others out voted him and LET Sesshoumaru's pack join with theirs.

"It's for the best, Inuyasha," Miroku stated calmly,"We're better joined with each other against Naraku than not. More force in numbers."

"Besides Inuyasha, we out voted you. So shut up before I S. I. T. you," Kagome threatened.

"Alright fine. Let's g..." Inuyasha trailed off as the wind shifted. He stiffened instantly.

Kagome noticed the change in Inuyasha's posture and asked,"What is it, Inuyasha?"

Inuyasha took another sniff of the air to make sure. "Death and lots of it," He stated gravely.

Sango jumped on Kirara as Kagome jumped on Inuyasha's back. "Let's go!" Sango shouted as Kirara began running east. Inuyasha caught up to Kirara with Miroku right behind him and Sesshoumaru's group bringing up the rear.

As the group broke through the trees of Inuyasha's Forest, they froze. Nothing could describe the carnage that lay before them. Thousands of demon carcasses were strewn about the fields. Some looked as though they'd been torn to shreds. Kagome felt sick.

"My god," Sango commented, "There's so much blood."

"I wonder what caused these demons to attack one another," Miroku pondered. His eyes widened slightly as he felt a weak surge of demonic power. "One of these demons is still alive," he stated as he walked toward where he felt the aura. Both groups followed him as he made his way across the battlefield.

A low painfilled groan drew the groups attention to a pit filled with debris. A whimper sounded from the mound of broken trees and dead bodies causing Sesshoumaru to raise an eyebrow in question. The group stood on the side of the pit for a moment before Inuyasha and Miroku jumped into it and began pulling dead demons, broken weapons, broken trees, and dirt out.

After nearly an hour of digging, the two reached the bottom and froze. Staring at them with a pair of violet eyes tinged red was a female demon. Her raven black hair and porcelain white skin were coated in blood. The black jagged markings adorning her cheeks were barely visible anymore. Her clothes were shredded and barely hanging on her trim form. Miroku took in the sight of her barely covered breasts and smiled. Her eyes narrowed and she snarled at him before trying to sit up.

Before anyone could make a move to help her, a growl sounded causing the group to focus their attention on Sesshoumaru. His eyes brimmed red for a moment before he jumped into the pit and pulled his pelt from his shoulder. He knelt next to the female and covered her with the pelt then turned to Inuyasha. "Pick her up carefully, Inuyasha. Her wounds are severe," he growled menacingly before jumping out of the pit.

Inuyasha huffed before lifting the demoness into his arms. He jumped as carefully as he could from the pit and glared at Sesshoumaru. "What're we gonna do with this bitch?" he asked as he glanced at the now growling female in his arms. She turned her head to Sesshoumaru and let out a growl.

Sesshoumaru nodded to her and glared at Inuyasha.

"First of all, address her properly. Lady Inutaishi is no bitch. A bitch is for breeding. She is not and I suggest you never call her that again. You'll find yourself missing something valuable to your anatomy should you repeat the offense to her. Secondly, we are heading to my palace where she can be treated properly. Miko," Sesshoumaru turned toward Kagome, "can you treat her enough to sustain her for two days?"

Kagome looked from Sesshoumaru to Inutaishi. "Sure. Let me get my things," she replied as she began digging through her bag. "The name's Kagome, by the way," she stated as she gathered her supplies and walked toward the demoness.

"Hn," Sesshoumaru replied as he once again focused on Inutaishi. Inuyasha had placed her on the ground and was watching her like a hawk as Kagome spread out her supplies. Sango sat next to Kagome and was handing her bandages while Inutaishi studied the miko's movements carefully.

Kagome looked up to Inuyasha and smiled sweetly at him. "Inuyasha? Could you get us some water so I can get Lady Inutaishi cleaned up please?" she asked. Inuyasha quirked an eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest. "There's no water around here, wench. You're on your own," he stated mockingly.

Inutaishi let out a snort and rolled her eyes. She looked at Sesshoumaru and cleared her throat before letting out a series of raspy barks and yips. As she finished, she whimpered slightly and rubbed her throat.

"She said there's a river about a half mile north of here and that you, Inuyasha, are an idiot for mocking the miko. Kagome, Lady Inutaishi thanks you for your assistance in treating her wounds and will repay you when she is able," Sesshoumaru translated as Inutaishi nodded in approval.

Kagome turned from Sesshoumaru and smiled at Inutaishi. "There's no need to repay me. I just hope you get better," she stated causing Inutaishi to cock her head to the side in confusion. Sango lightly touched Inutaishi's shoulder. "Kagome never wants payment for her kindness. That's just how she is," Sango stated and shrugged. Inutaishi nodded and jerked her head toward Sesshoumaru again.

"She also said that it may be easier to take her to the river instead of hauling water back and forth. This Sesshoumaru agrees with her. Inuyasha, you will carry her there and be gentle," Sesshoumaru stated as the group began gathering their things again.

"Were there any other survivors?" Kagome asked Inutaishi as Inuyasha picked her up again.

Inutaishi lowered her head toward her chest and shook it sadly. A small whine escaped her throat and she buried her face in Inuyasha's haori. Inuyasha stiffened slightly as the scent of tears hit his nose and he tightened his arms around her.

"They did not die in vain, Lady Inutaishi. The East will live again," Sesshoumaru stated as he laid his hand on top of her head. His eyes met Inuyasha's for a moment and made a silent threat to the half demon. 'Hurt her and you die'

Inuyasha nodded and the group began the trek north to the river.
