Angel of Mine by Nikki-kun

Chapter One

Angel of Mine

"Sessho! Wait for me silly!" she giggled, taking his hand into hers when she was finally able to catch up with him. Seeing a smirk on his face she asked, "You do that on purpose, don't you?"

"Who? Me?" he asked innocently as he wrapped an arm around her petite form.

He was always a heartless, stoic person to everyone and everything since the day he was born; except to her. She was the color against a crowd of grey. In a word, she was beautiful, physically and mentally. She had the grace of a bird in flight and a smile that melted his heart. The one thing that truly stuck out was her eyes. They were a shocking sapphire and the simplest look touched his soul. They were endless; an abyss of beautiful blue. If she would let him, he would stare into her eyes for hours, content. If only she knew how much he loved her.

"So, how was your day? Anything happen?"

"Not particularly. Work was dull as always," he sighed, though he had to admit it was definitely a step up from his father's firm back in New York. San Francisco was definitely more relaxing than his home State.

"Awww...I'm sorry. I had fun today. It was someone's birthday at the office so they brought me a slice of cake," she smiled as the thought of the delicious cake came to mind.

He smiled down at her in admiration. It was times like this that he thanked the gods for being alive. He also had to thank them for her being alive as well. It was not too long ago that he had almost lost her forever.

"Kagome! Hold on, please!" a frightened teenage boy yelled as her heart continued to slow.

"Move aside son," a doctor ordered as a young Sesshomaru was ushered to the side. The electrocardiogram seemed to cry in agony as Kagome's heart stopped beating. "Damn it, we're loosing her!"

"Kagome! Please don't leave me!"

"Sessho? Do you want to see a movie later tonight?"

"What?" he snapped as he was brought out of his reverie. "A movie? Sure, I'll pick you up at 7 o'clock sharp."

"Okay!" she exclaimed excitedly as he helped her into her car. "Then 7:30-ish it is!"

Sesshomaru slowly stepped up to the classic green apartment door with a brass plate that carried the number two on it. Knocking softly he heard a call from inside to let himself in, so he did. He smiled as he opened the door with his copy of the key to her apartment. He almost laughed when he saw the mess she had made while trying to find something adequate to wear on their date, if you could call it that. College books and pieces of clothing were scattered everywhere. When he finally saw her come out, his breath caught in his throat. She was dressed simply in a plain white sundress and a blue necklace that matched her eyes.

"Ready to go? We don't want to miss our movie," she muttered absentmindedly while checking her purse for her wallet and keys. After everything checked out, she took his hand into her left and steered him out the door while locking it with her unoccupied right hand.

"Kagome, you look beautiful," he managed to say through his amazement.

"You don't think it's too plain?" she asked while smoothing out invisible wrinkles.

"Not at all. You look amazing," he murmured softly, running a thumb over the soft knuckles of her hand.

"Promise?" she asked, suddenly unsure of her choice.

"Promise..." he half-answered, as another memory surged forward.

"I'm sorry son. We lost her in the end," the doctor told the boy with a solemn face. "We did our best, but she... she slipped right through our hands. A shame, such a young life..."he murmured as he walked out the door, shaking his head in obvious disappointment.

"Kagome... Kagome! You can't leave me like this! You promised...you promised we'd always be together!" a young Sesshomaru cried over her still body. Suddenly there was a faint beep, so soft that he thought for a moment he had imagined it. There! It was another one! Could it be?

"Sesshomaru?" came a soft voice from the hospital bed.

"Kagome?"

"Sesshomaru? You in there buddy?" she asked, worried. She had been talking to him for a few minutes before she realized his mind was somewhere else completely.

"Hm? I'm fine. Just...thinking about something," he responded, smiling at the suspicious yet concerned look adorning her sweet face. After a moment of silence, she nodded her head as if accepting his answer and continued to walk toward the ticket booth.

She knew she was a typical "plain Jane," nothing special. She knew she did not stick out in a crowd. She was clumsy and had a goofy smile. "You look beautiful." Why did he say things like that? They were not true. She knew she was no beauty. Sesshomaru, now he was gorgeous, almost godlike. She always wondered why he chose to do things like this with her instead of with a girlfriend, but she did not ask; it made her happy to be with him. It was because of him that she was alive after all.

"Kagome," a strange voice boomed from somewhere she could not see. Why was everything so blurry? Was she in Heaven?

"Where... Where am I?"

"Kagome, do you want to live?"

"Yes. Yes I want to live," she cried in desperation, realizing somehow the situation she was facing.

"Why?"

"For... for Sesshomaru. I promised him...I love him!"

"Love? Then live for him. Be his angel, and live!" the voice echoed one last time before disappearing completely.

Everything seemed to be sucked into a dark hole before becoming completely black. She suddenly felt like she had been hit by a truck. Maybe she had. Her body was stiff and there was an annoying beeping sound in the background not far from her ear. She also thought she heard crying. Was that Sesshomaru?

"Sesshomaru?" she asked carefully, afraid to open her eyes, thinking it might all be a dream. She relaxed when she heard his soft voice whispering her name into her ear. Thank Kami.

"Kagome?"

"Kagome? What movie do you want to see?" Sesshomaru asked as they reached the front of the line.

"Umm... anything is fine. No scary movies, though!"

He chuckled lightly before nodding his head in agreement. He knew she did not like scary movies and chose one that he thought she may enjoy. She smiled at his laugh realizing she loved it when he showed his true feelings around her.

She never told him what had really happened while she was supposedly dead. She thought that it was maybe just a dream. She hoped it was a dream. Yet, somewhere deep in her heart, she knew that it was not. Kagome knew she was alive because of him; because of Sesshomaru. She told him that she did not remember anything from when she was dead, that everything was black. What would he think if he found out the truth? Would he still do these things with her? Would he accept her still? She did not know and honestly did not want to find out. As long as she was with him she was content. She was his angel. Who else would she spend her time with than her best friend? The friend she loved more than anything, even life itself.

"This should be a good movie. Don't worry, it's not a scary one," he consoled as they found their seats inside the dark theater.

He had asked Kagome what had happened when she was dead. He had asked if she had seen anything. Her answer had been "no," yet a part of him felt that there was something she wan not telling him. The look she gave him when he brought up the subject was different from her usual look. What was it? Mysterious? Unsure? It was almost as if she had seen something, but was not sure what to make of it, or was afraid of what she had seen. It did not matter. As long as he was with her, he was happy. She was his angel. He never wanted to be with anyone else. Sesshomaru wanted to live like this forever with Kagome, the one he loved more than anything, even life itself.

"Thank you Sesshomaru," she whispered softly as she kissed him on the cheek and cuddled closer for warmth.

"You're welcome," he answered just as softly, laying his arm across her shoulder for extra heat. She laid her head down on his shoulder and sighed happily as they watched the movie begin.
