Two Meanings

They say to name something is to give it purpose.

What is your name?

Sesshomaru.

What does it mean?

A circle of death. The killing perfection.

What is her name?

Kagome.

What does it mean?

The woven form of flexible reeds into a vessel. It is a form filled with empty spaces unsuitable to carry rice, but perfect to be used as a net to capture up whatever she might wish.

What is your name?

Kagome.

What does it mean?

It was my mother's favorite name. She said it sounded soft and warm and gentle. She said it was unique and pure.

What is his name?

Sesshomaru.

What does it mean?

Many things. It means death and circle. It could mean eternity or a perfect death... But for me, as I see it, there is another meaning many disregard. A sessho is a protector and a maru is what one calls something beloved. Many people forget that, but I do not. He is not a perfect death to me. He is a beloved protector.

Whether it is the purpose placed through the history of the bearer of a name or one that comes directly from the meaning, direction is given through understanding of what the name is to the giver and its bearer.

I was reading and writing at the same time and then this idea hit me like a bolt... I know it isn't a fan fiction. It's an observation, but it made me smile and I hope it did you too.

Peace.
