Chapter One: This Morning is Only the Start

Kagome groaned and rubbed her eyes as she listened the annoying ringing of her telephone. She debated with herself on whether to answer it or not. In the end she realized the caller wasn't going to give up and answered.

"Hello?" she said groggily as she picked up the receiver.

"Hello, my dear friend, Kagome!" said the person of the other line. Kagome sighed.

"Sango what the hell do you want?" she answered back annoyingly. She heard Sango gasp.

"Well, well, that's no way to greet a sincere and caring friend woke up extra early this morning in an effort to drive across town to bring you breakfast." Sango said. Kagome would have laughed had she not been so tired.

"And to what do I owe this generous offer?" she asked. She could practically see Sango's bright smile through the phone.

"Can't I just be a good friend for once?" she said in a fake offensive tone. Kagome smirked as she thought about one extra detail.

"You were at Miroku's house last night, weren't you?" she said. Sango was quiet for a second before bursting into a fit of hysteria.

"Alright, alright you caught me," she said as she calmed down from laughing. "In any case. I'm on my way over there. Give me about five minutes." She said. Kagome yawned and answered.

"Alright, Sango. I'll be...right here." She said finishing her yawn.

"Don't go back to sleep, Kagome Higurashi. Your class starts in an hour anyway. You might as well get yourself ready since you're up." Sango said.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll be up." Kagome said back. Sango smiled before hanging up the phone.

Kagome put the receiver back down before going into her closet and pulling out a pair of sweatpants. She surely couldn't have Sango seeing her in her underwear. As she started walking to the bathroom to brush her teeth, she heard the knocking on her door.

"Coming!" she yelled out. She walked to the door and wasn't surprised to find Sango standing there in the doorway with a box of Krispy Kreme donuts in her hand and smug look on her face. "Sango, if you had the key, why make me run all the way out here to answer the door for you?" she said annoyingly.

Sango rolled her eyes and sighed.

"Because I live to annoy you, my dear Kagome." She said. Kagome returned the gesture and turned away from the girl walking back to her room.

"Kiss my ass, Sango." She said as she walked away. Sango shrugged and walked to the living room, sitting down on the plush sofa there.

"Kags, you know I don't kiss ass to get what I want." She said.

"No, you just fuck the boss." Kagome yelled from her room. Sango giggled.

"Oh you make me out to be such a harlot, Kagome."

"Isn't that what you are?" Kagome said as she walked back into the living room fully dressed. She picked up a hair tie from the dining room table and pulled up her hair wrapping it into a messy bun.

Sango decided not to answer to her friend's last question. Instead she studied the young girl's outfit.

"Deciding to change our outfits are we?" she asked, as she looked Kagome up and down. She was wearing an entire Marc Jacobs outfit from their fall collection. It was somethin she'd never seen Kagome Higurashi wear in her life. Even the Chanelle 21 knee length boots she wore was something totally not Kagome. "You look dazzling darling." Sango said in her fake English accent. Kagome rolled her eyes.

"My mom bought this for me Christmas of 2000." She said as she took a donut from Sango.

"Yes, but why wear it now? You usually settle for the windbreaker pants and sweat shirt. This outfit is so...me."

Kagome laughed.

"Yes well, you can have it after today. The counselor from Bridgman is coming to Professor Suomo's class today. And guess who she's coming to inspect." Kagome said self-assuredly. Sango laughed.

"I could never guess." She said sarcastically.

"Yep, I figured I could look my best at least one day."

Sango laughed.

"Aren't chemistry majors supposed to look like complete dorks?" she asked. Kagome glared at her and shook her head.

"No, Sango. We're supposed to look like respectable people." She snatched the box of donuts from her friend and set this on the table. "Not stereotypical 'geeks'." She finished.

"Yeah, well let's see if miss non stereotype can endure the heels much longer. Those bad boys look like they'd kill someone." She said referring to the boots Kagome wore. Kagome shook her head. "If it really comes to it, I'll trade them out for my socks, trust me." she said. Sango laughed then looked at her watch.

"Well I know we better get going now, only twenty minutes until class time for the both of us. We can stop and get coffee on campus when we get there. The new Starbucks they just opened up has those new chai teas that I want to try. They say it's the shit right now."

"I would rather not have anything that is referred to as 'The Shit' if you know what I mean." Kagome laughed. "I'll just settle for my iced mocha."

Sango rolled her eyes.

"What ever honey, we need to go." She said as she walked out the door. Kagome smiled before grabbing her supply bag and following her friend out of the door.

"Welcome class. I hope you all's weekend was long-lived and eventful. No one getting drunk at parties and such." Kagome smiled widely as Professor Suomo spoke. She hadn't been able to eat that morning or even stop a Starbucks because of the rush of getting to class on time, so of course she was starving, but she still had the energy to smile. She'd been smiling since the counselor walked into the room. This was her one and only chance to impress the woman in order to get her big job offer. She only prayed nothing happened to which she'd fuck it up.

Professor Suomo looked around his class, before turning his head at the sight of someone entering the classroom. Kagome continued to stare hopefully at the counselor. She could care two shits about whoever was late coming to class. Finally, Professor Suomo spoke again.

"Class as you all know, this week we will be working on our anatomy enhancement projects. We will do a series of three experiments today within the time limits given. This will go on every hour on the hour. By the end of the hour, I will need you to turn in your lab results for grading." He paused for a second and turned to the man beside him. They spoke for a second and the man walked back out.

"What are you so happy about?" Kagome heard her friend and lab partner say next to her as they wrapped their aprons around themselves and put their goggles around their eyes. Kagome smiled wider and looked slyly at her friend.

"Look over there." Said pointing to the end of the class. Eri followed her direction to a lady sitting in the back of the class. Eri looked back at Kagome strangely.

"Okay..."

Kagome sighed and rolled her eyes.

"Eri, that's Shiori Tamahashi. She works for Bridgman." She said. Eri made and oh sound before nodded and pulling out the test tubes and other supplies to get started. She could tell Suomo was about to get started.

"Isn't that the overly high class science department that does testing on animals?" Eri asked a bit annoyed. Kagome rolled her eyes and sighed.

"First off, Eri, it's not THAT high class. They just have a very distinct level of professionalism. And second, they don't test on animals. They quit doing that after the animal protesting back in 1995." Kagome countered. Eri shrugged. Just as she was about to speak again, Professor Suomo spoke.

"Okay everyone, the project is based on the bio chemicals that are released into the human anatomy during any pollution or contamination series." He said in a loud tone, making sure his voice reached everyone. Professor Suomo was never one to repeat himself. "Make sure that you and your lab partner each have your own outlines and statistics charts. Remember you're each turning one in for grading, people." He paused for a second before grabbing his stopwatch from his pocket. "If everyone is finished setting up, I believe we can get started. You will have exactly one hour to complete this portion of the experiment. After which you will have a thirty-minute break and then start the next session. Begin."

Once the words came out of his mouth, Kagome turned into the scientist. She started putting together every piece of data given and grabbed all the chemicals she needed for the actual lab.

She was a true lab rat, and everything in this was perfect.

'I'm so getting into Bridgman.' She said to herself as she worked. Unfortunately, one wrong move was about to end that dream in all its form.
