Breaking Through by Mystic Miko

Break

Disclaimer: Trust me, if I owned Inuyasha and Co. I'd be swimming in money instead of pleading with my bank account to suddenly multiply...several times. So no, I don't own it.

Kagome just stood there for a few minutes, staring at them in agony. The two of them didn't even notice, so wrapped up in their own little world of daring passion that they hadn't heard the door open; hadn't heard her sharp intake of air. There, right before her horrified eyes, wrapped in each other's heated embrace, kissing the other with passion untold stood Inuyasha, Kagome's fiancé of three months and his ex-girlfriend Kikyo, who also happened to be Kagome's older sister.

Kagome felt like she was being torn apart, piece by antagonizing piece of her should was slowly ripped away as she watched the love of her life make love to her beloved older sister. A broken sob was torn from he throat as Kagome tore from the room, not being able to face the scene she had walked in on. But as she slowly left the building her emotions took a sudden turn, she was filled with anger, she hated them. Hated them both. How could they do such a thing to her? Why?

And suddenly the question 'why' was more important than running away. So she ran back into the apartment complex, her anger spurring her on. She would confront them, she wouldn't be the weak female who ran away. Yes, maybe if the confronted them everything would work out it would...and suddenly her confidence was gone along with her anger.

But she had already walked back into the apartment and they were both looking at her, well, Kikyo was looking at her with a blank look and Inuyasha was staring at the floor. So she had to ask, because some tiny part of her that knew that something bad was going to happen was curious as to why Inuyasha would throw their happiness away and to why Kikyo would betray her in such a way.

"Why?" Inuyasha looked up at her question but it was Kikyo who answered.

"Honestly Kagome, why do you think? And don't get all weepy, after all, it's only fair, you did steal him from me in the first place. Besides, Inuyasha doesn't love you, he loves me and we're going to be together, you were just...an obstacle." Inuyasha winced at Kikyo's words but he didn't deny them, making them all the more painful for Kagome.

Her sister had always been blunt and cold, but Kikyo's words had never hurt like this before, had never felt like they were killing her inside slowly. Kagome couldn't understand. She couldn't see Kikyo's logic; didn't understand why Inuyasha had asked her to marry him if he hadn't loved her. When Kagome and Inuyasha had started dating it had already been a year since Kikyo had broken up with him, and yet she was being told that she had taken him from her sister?

Kagome didn't know whether to yell or cry; throw a fit or throw herself out of the window. It was just all so confusing and hurtful.

"Inuyasha...how could you, you said that you l-loved me and yet-" Kikyo sneered and Inuyasha sighed sullenly.

"Look...Kagome, we didn't mean for you to find out like this, I didn't want to hurt you it's just...I love Kikyo. Whenever I look at you I see her, that's why I went out with you in the first place. I'll admit that I let it go too far but I'm stopping it now. You have to let go now because me and Kikyo are meant to be together. I'm sorry."

Kagome wanted to cry. Her world was falling down around her. She had somehow put Inuyasha up on a pedestal in her mind; she had thought he could do no wrong. And now everything she thought about both he and her sister was destroyed.

She had been betrayed by the two people she held closest to her heart and now she felt empty and alone. But she didn't want them to see, she couldn't allow them to see just how much they had truly hurt her. No, she had to stay strong, she had to pretend that she wasn't falling to pieces as she stood there.

"Oh...I see, well then, if you'll excuse me. I'll come by for my things later I guess." Kikyo glared at her, although for what reason Kagome couldn't fathom since up until that point Kikyo had always seemed to just tolerate her without actually showing an emotion.

"Don't worry about your stuff, we'll send it to the Shrine. I assume you'll be moving back in with Mom. I don't want you coming back here. It's bad enough that I had to sit by and watch as you prattled on about a wedding with my love. Just leave, you've done enough damage by taking him from me in the first lace."

Kikyo's lies hurt...possibly more than actually finding the two of them having sex on the living room floor. The fact that Kikyo had been holding such animosity towards her was the last blow to Kagome, and she could almost physically hear her heart shatter into nothing. A flood of emotional ain entered her system, but with that pain came a feeling of emptiness, of nothingness. Kagome left before the tears came.

She ran out of the apartment just as the floodgates broke. She didn't even try to stop the torrential flow of salty water, she just let each saddened drop fall from her face, leaving a trail of tears in her sorrowful wake. It was as she left the building that she made the vow to herself. Kagome vowed to herself that she would become strong, that she would never allow another to hurt her again.

She vowed to rebuild her heart and then protect it from those that would seek to re-shatter the fragile organ. She sealed her vow with tears shed from the heart; tears of betrayal and lost love.
