To Do Otherwise

One-Shot

She turned to him because there was no other choice. She followed him because there was no where else.

He accepted her because it did not occur to him to turn her away.

She said nothing, merely followed like the doll she had become.

He asked nothing, accepting that she had become what she was and that he needed nothing else.

She became frail because she no longer cared enough to take care of herself.

She became frail because he never cared enough to make her take care of herself.

She does not understand why her life turned out this way.

He does not understand her life or what happened, but he does not care enough to ask.

In time, she watches as the ones around the grow old and die, and for one moment, she thinks that all hope may not be lost because of the way he mourns.

He mourns for the young one when she dies, old and gray. But no aloud. Never aloud. Still, he knows that the one who follows him has seen through the things he hides.

She knows that he mourns because that is her way, and he does not care enough to change it.

In time, she begins to realize that she cannot prevent the fact that she will care, and she does care. She begins to harbor a care for this thing. This demon who can never understand her because he does not care.

But still, she cares.

And slowly, he knows because he can see through her the way she sees through him. He watches as her skin returns to the color that it once was, and he knows that she cares.

She gains weight because she feeds herself. She feeds herself because she cares.

And caring gives her something to live for.

He knows that she cares, but he does not understand what it is she cares about. Just that she does. He does not know what she cares for because he does not care enough to ask. He does not care for her...or so he tells himself, even as he begins to answer her when she asks him questions about his past.

She smiles now, and she has begun to collect the flowers that grow from the ground. He does not understand why she smiles...but he allows her to do it anyways because he does not care if she does or doesn't.

He notices that she is now the way she once was, and she is an enigma to him...but still... he does not care. He won't care... or so he says when she asks him.

She knows that he has begun to care for her, and that makes her smile because demons are bad liars. Especially him. And when he talks to her, she knows.

And then one day, he says he does not care, and he turns to her and tells her to go away.

And she smiles back at him and replies that she cares to.

He can only nod because he tells himself that he does not care what she thinks. It does not matter.

So, when she gave herself to him many months later, he told himself that he took her because he did not care to do otherwise.

And he does not care to do otherwise.

He protects her because he does not care to do anything else.

He holds her because he does not care what the world may think.

And, he loves her because he does not care to know what it would be like without her love.

A/N: Just a drabble...my first attempt at something like this. Still haven't decided if I like it or not...
