Chapter One:

:

Kagome glared angrily at the pile of paper sitting peacefully on her desk as if she could light them on fire with just her heated gaze. Emitting a dangerous growl, she continued to glower at the documents that were calmly ignoring her vicious stare. Raising her hand cautiously in an animalistic manner, she reached into her backpack and rummaged for a blood-red pen, her glare never straying. Unearthing none, she settled for an extremely sharp pencil with a terribly worn eraser. Casting one last glance at the stack of paper, she tiredly heaved a sigh, a look of defeat settling on her lightly sun-tanned face, and resigned herself to an afternoon of homework that would probably extend into her evening.

The eighteen-year-old student had previously planned to go out with her best friend and next-door neighbor -- currently her college roommate -- Sango Hiraikotsu. However, due to the unexpected load of homework that she had received from her extremely generous Japanese Literature professor, they had been forced to reschedule their day out.

Ever since the first day of kindergarten, when she had accidentally stumbled on the first of the two hundred steps leading to the Higurashi Shrine and caused Sango to carry her up the rest of the stairs, they had been best friends. Hot and tired, they had shared their first full-length conversation over a gallon of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Throughout their entire friendship, they had only fought once, and it was over a pointless misunderstanding. Arriving at their classroom on the first day of school, they had discovered that two male students -- Inuyasha Toukishou and Miroku Kazana -- had joined their sixth grade class, making the number of students in their schoolroom a total of twenty-seven. A week later, they revealed to each other that they had both fallen for one of the new students. Because of their almost exact likes and dislikes, they had instantly assumed that they both had a crush on the same guy. She and Sango had hated each other for an entire month, playing pranks, telling secrets, and embarrassing the other as much as they could, before they realized that they liked very different people. Comprehending their stupidity, they had once again become close friends and pinky-swore that they would never do anything so dense again.

Currently, she and Sango were both attending Tokyo University. They had arrived just little over a month ago, and were presently occupying a snug room in Dorm 7. Even though getting accepted was only a small accomplishment for Sango, she had practically ignored sleep during the week prior to the acceptance exam, surviving only because of a bitter black liquid called coffee.

Startled out of her intense concentration by the soft ringing of her dorm phone, Kagome rushed towards her bedside table, but tripped over one of the legs of her newly bought chair. Attempting to sit up, she accidentally bumped her head on one of the corners of her bed. Wincing, one hand reached for the phone while the other tenderly found its way into a mass of midnight tresses, trying to soothe the pain erupting from the right side of her skull.

"Hello?"

She grimaced as her hand strayed over an excruciatingly agonizing spot on her head.

"Kagome? This is Sango. I'll be there in about forty-five minutes. Come out when you see the limo."

"Huh? Wait...outside? Limo?" A look of confusion shot across Kagome's face as she tried to recall if Sango had previously mentioned anything relating to what was currently happening. Remembering no earlier indications, Kagome's insatiable curiosity instantly sparked.

"Kagome, don't tell me you forgot! You promised that you would come with me! Tonight's the first time the company's hosting the Annual Business Party."

"The Annual...Business Party?"

"You know, the one that they always broadcast on TV. It's where all of the major corporations meet and discuss future plans, merges, contracts...things like that."

"..."

"Kagome Higurashi, you...forgot about our plans, didn't you?!"

"..."

"Admit it!"

"..."

"Eug! We don't have time for this!"

"..."

"Kagome! Say something!"

"..."

When there was no response, Sango strained to detect some sort of sound from the other end of the line to prove that her best friend didn't just...die on her...or something. Through the faint rasping sound emitting from her cell-phone earpiece, she could faintly hear the sound of loudly gushing water. Though she didn't have any positive evidence, Sango suspected that Kagome, though sometimes a little naïve, had grasped the situation at hand and had took the phone into the bathroom with her, left it on the sink counter, and stripped so that she could take a hot shower before her forty-five minutes were up.

Hanging up as not to waste any more of her minutes, Sango nervously requested for her driver to speed up; she could only hope that they wouldn't be late.

Hopping out after a twenty-minute shower, Kagome swiftly dried herself off, dashed into her closet, slipped on a piece of stray clothing on the wooden floor, and rammed her face into the stiff wall of her dorm room. Though her nose stung slightly from the abrupt impact, she ignored the dull ache and pulled open drawer after drawer, searching for appropriate lingerie. Finally deciding on a lacy black strapless bra and matching underwear, she slipped out of her towel and was about to put on her carefully chosen lingerie when she heard the doorbell ring. Thinking that Sango had arrived early, she flitted into her undergarments and rushed into the hallway to unlock the door, opening it afterwards in one rapid motion.

Unfortunately, it wasn't Sango.
