Southern Gentlemen by amaniblue

A letter in the Mail

Dearest Kagome,

It is I your sister Kikyou. Oh, how I have missed you these few months. My engagement with Inuyasha has been wonderful, but I admit; it was quite dreadful during our weeklong courtship. Some, courtship it was, before I even saw him we were promised to each other. Thanks, Mother. Anyways, the reason for my letter is not to rant; I'll do that when we see each other. I do miss our midnight chats. Inuyasha's brother, Sesshomaru, is being recognized for what ever he does. I must admit being in the South is quite different; it's like a whole new world. Well, I'll let you be the judge of that. Please say that you'll come.

Sincerely,

Your loyal sister

I read the letter over and over, to be sure I was not dreaming. How I missed my sister since she moved. Mother is driving me crazy. She wants me to marry a man named Naraku. There is something about him that I distrust. He is quite unusual looking, but I guess having bloodshot eyes all the time does the trick. I do not know how Kikyou got out of her engagement with that man. Inuyasha must be a saint or quite wealthy, I think it is the latter, but we, Inuyasha and I, need to have a serious talk because now I am next in line. I should not be blaming him for everything; Mother did have a part in it. She was the one that told Naraku that he would make a lovely son-in-law. How convenient for me. As a surprise this letter is to me, I cannot hide how relieved I am to get it, maybe Kikyou's husband will allow me to stay with them until I can get a job or at least until Naraku looses interest in me.

"Mother," I yelled, Kikyou has sent a letter.

"Well, child do not make me wait; open it up," she said smugly. I reread the letter out to her, well most of it. I am not such a disrespectful daughter after all.

She took a long puff at her pipe and said, "Yes, maybe you should go. Maybe, Kikyou can talk some sense into you; she listened to me unlike you." I bowed my head as I excused my self from the living area.

There are times like this that I wish Father were living. He would have never condoned her behavior. But, now that I am older, I must admit, I do feel sorry for him. He, too, was a victim of circumstances, the old customs. I must not sulk to long; I have some packing to do.

"Damn," I whispered, making sure that no one know, I know, it is unlady- like. But, after you say it is it not like a breath of fresh air, so, relieving and

relaxing.

Kikyou,

I must say that I am disappointed in you. You say that you would like me to come see you, but I do not know where you are or what day the function is. I am starting to feel that you have forgotten about me or you are just teasing me. Do not delay; I am already packing

Sent with a little disappointment,

Kagome
