Chapter 1- The Prelude

"Kagome nee-chan! Look what Rin made!" Rin ran towards the futuristic miko enthusiastically, a lopsided flower crown on her head.

"That's very nice Rin." Higurashi Kagome, now 18 years old, smiled at the little girl. Her blue eyes lifted to the sky and noted the position of the sun.

"Inuyasha, I think we better take a break!" Kagome called out to the figure in red in front of the group.

"Cheh, not likely! We have to hurry up and complete the jewel!" Golden eyes glared irritably over a red clad shoulder, a set of doggy ears twitched on top of a silver head.

"Be reasonable Inuyasha, lady Kagome is right, we have been walking none stop for over five hours without pausing for a break." Violet eyes bore into gold as Miroku tried to reason with his hanyou friend.

"Yes we did!"

"The five minute pause to allow Kagome-chan fill up water bottles doesn't count Inuyasha." Brows scrunched up into a frown under brown bangs as Sango replied. "We're didn't even have time for a quick lunch."

"I'm hungry~~~" The fox kit Shippou whined in Kagome's bicycle basket.

"Keh, it's all because of your stupid human bodies that we're wasting precious time here!" Inuyasha raised his voice into a yell. Damn. He hated wasting traveling time.

"Inuyasha," the cold voice made the hanyou pause "let the humans rest, we will not get anywhere for the remainder of day if they tire themselves out."

"Feh."

"Why you despicable half-breed! Don't you dare talk to Sesshoumaru-sama that way!" Bulbous yellow eyes glared at Inuyasha beside a two-headed dragon.

A week ago, Sesshoumaru had joined forces with Inuyasha since the shard collecting was closing off to an end, which means the final battle with Naraku is looming closer.

"Feh, whatever stupid toad..." Inuyasha huffed and sat down beneath a tree in a clearing close to a spring a few feet away from the road. This will be the campsite for tonight.

Kagome boiled the water and prepared ramen for everyone. Including Sesshoumaru. It had been amusing really, to see the demon lord stating that he does not eat human food until he caught a whiff of ramen. To say the inu was curious was a downright understatement. He had been obsessed about finding out exactly what the food contain. Before the day ended, he had been eating along with the rest of the group.

Kagome opened her text book as she ate. She cannot afford to fail any tests now. Her final exam is in a month and graduation is in sight. After 3 years, with the exceptions of failing attendance due to 'sickness', Kagome's grades were one of the best in the year level. But now, with the end so near, her concentration and skill wasn't guaranteed. Heck, she's not even sure if the final battle will take place on her exam date!

"Ne, ne~Kagome nee-chan, wacha doin'?" Rin asked as her curious head peered over Kagome's seated figure to look at the book. "What are those funny scribbles?"

"It's a text book," Kagome explained as she held the heavy book closer to Rin for her to inspect "this one is on mathematics. The funny scribbles are formulas and writing. I have a test soon, and I'll be in trouble if I fail."

"Feh, you don't need those stuff! You don't need that school thing or whatever as well." Inuyasha turned his nose up. "That kind of stuff is pointless."

Kagome's mood darkened. She glared at the inu hanyou across from her.

"Inuyasha..."

"Next time, don't even bother to go back for that school, stay here and finish collecting the shards!"

"Uh...Inuyasha...I don't think that's a good idea..." Shippou murmured around his lollipop that he had received after the late lunch. His emerald orbs shone with concern as to what was about to come.

"Inuyasha..."

"What you damn onna?!"

"Osuwari, osuwari, osuwari!"

Three consecutive 'thud's could be heard, startling the birds in the near-by trees into flight.

"Ow, ow, ow! Bitch!"

"OSUWARI!"

Smoke could be seen rising out of the clearing from miles across. A large crater was gifted under the hot headed hanyou as he twitched in agony.

Grabbing her yellow backpack along with her bow and arrows, she stormed off towards the direction of the springs.

"Kagome-chan! Where are you going?"

"To clean up!"

Sesshoumaru rose slowly, and followed the steaming miko. If anything were to happen to the Shikon jewel and its miko, everything would be for naught. It would be in his best interest to keep the miko safe. Kagome does not mind the yuki trailing behind her. He had done this before. When the demon lord wasn't trying to kill the group, he's actually quite good company in Kagome's opinion, even if the said demon lord is stoic and practically emotionless, but he is a surprisingly deep thinker.

Upon the arrival to the clear spring, Kagome knelt down and began washing the dishes. She toweled them dry and placed them back into her bag. As she rose, the water rose with her, snaking a watery arm out wrapping around an ankle. Kagome panicked, and when she panics, she screams. Sesshoumaru burst out of the foliage and cut the 'arm' off Kagome with Tokijin. But that didn't help much. It was water after all.

"Kagome!" Inuyasha's voice penetrated through the woods as he rushed towards the scene. The minute he came clear of the foliage with the rest of the group, a water bubble had enclosed Kagome, her stuff, and Sesshoumaru in its oxygen-less grasp. A few bubbles escaped Kagome as she tried not to breathe underwater. Sesshoumaru on the other hand, his eyes were tinged with red as he attempted to break free with his yuki and sword. A maniac laughter filled the clearing. It belonged to none other than Naraku in his baboon pelt.

"I shall be rid of you for once and for all!" Naraku shot a tentacle out and made a grab at Kagome's Shinkon shards. Kagome reacted on reflex. Her hand shot out and grabbed at the jewel as the necklace left her. On some odd chance, her fingernails found grooves on the rough surface of the jewel where it had yet to be completed, and a piece had broken off. Naraku did not notice this, and held out a glowing hand when he had obtained the Shinkon. The jewel disappeared in a mass of purple miasma as a multi-colored portal appeared beneath Kagome and Sesshoumaru's feet, dropping them, and the water surrounding them, into the swirling mass of colors.

"No!!!" Inuyasha slashed at Naraku while Miroku hurried and attempt to seal off the portal with the little knowledge he had...and failed. The portal closed, leaving no trace of the previous two occupants, and a wooden doll had fallen out of the baboon pelt when Inuyasha's claws tore through Naraku.

"Kukukukuku...let's see how you finish your shard hunting without your miko or with the strength of the demon lord." The spider hanyou's voice faded as the wooden doll was crushed beneath Inuyasha's foot.

"Damn!" Inuyasha stared guiltily at the spot where Kagome used to be.

"DAMN!!"
