Arrangement of Convenience by Demitria Miriam

The Brilliance Between TPI

Title: Arrangement of Convenience

Author: Demitria Miriam

Pairing: Sesshomaru/Kagome

Rating: R

Disclaimer: Rumiko Takahashi owns Inuyasha. Barbara McCauley owns the idea behind her book Callan's Proposition and Reyn owns the fact that I actually read it. (She's also writing a Naruto fic based on this same novel so go read that if you're a Sasuke/Naruto fan! It's titled Won't Let You Go by Reyn here on AFF.net.)

Warnings: AU/ set in modern day, somewhere in Demboland since I really don't want to even try putting this in Japan, let alone America. Also, depending on if this fic is liked enough for me to want to continue it, it may or may not turn into more than a simple one-shot. Also... Humor abounds!

Dedicated to: This is for the writer of Unexpected Endeavors, Scottishfae... cause I've only ever read TWO Sesshomaru/Kagome fics which was UE and that House of the Moon story and I loved UE! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd write for this pairing, let alone read it, but here we are, and all thanks to her! Yay!

Summary: She was never a swan of a beauty. Maybe that was why her boss, Takahashi Sesshomaru, had yet to see her behind her large glasses and plain work outfits. That is until suddenly Higurashi Kagome has to quit work due to a scandalous secret. Now Sesshomaru will do anything to get his best secretary back!

Chapter 1: The Brilliance Behind TPI

Takahashi Sesshomaru was one of the two proprietors of Takahashi Private Investigations, an agency that, hence its name, did private investigating for its customers.

Do you have suspicions that your husband was involved in a high class sex scandal that didn't involve you underneath him? Then go cry to someone who cares and then hire TPI to catch the cheating bastard with their Telescopic Photo Lens of Justice! Think that your daughter committed an atrocious crime which involved all five of your highly valued bank accounts? Then ground her ass, lock her in a cage and contact TPI, a business you can trust to track down the little slut's whereabouts, spendings, liaisons, etc.! Do you think your grandmother could have killed the sales clerk for short changing her in the market the other day? Take it up with the TPI to get good old granny cleared! Do you think that someone ran over you cat in a fit of impatience? Then go to the police cause going to TPI will only get you laughed at, especially considering the fact that the owners were dog demons.

Yes, TPI was an agency that served every purpose under the sun (except going after cat killers) and then some. Developed by one of the most brilliant, womanizing minds of the century, Takahashi InuTaishou. However, the owner himself was usually gone, visiting other countries, promoting business, doing business, having secret trysts, or... whatever the hell the old man called his womanizing these days.

When InuTaishou was gone, his eldest son, Sesshomaru, the only one interested in good old fashioned detective work, was in charge of TPI Headquarters. Which was quite often it seemed.

Takahashi Sesshomaru, 27, would find himself at the forefront of TPI, taking on multiple cases a day, solving them and then retiring to a bar down the street that his little brother owned, called the Bone Eater's Well. It wasn't nearly as sophisticated or elegant as Sesshomaru would have preferred (as he had constantly voiced when Takahashi Inuyasha remodeled the interior to his own preferences), but it was good enough for him to go to when needing to satisfy his baser needs at the end of a long hard day. Free food, plenty of women, and some of the best brew he had ever tasted (though he'd be damned if he let Inuyasha know that, especially since that was the one thing he actually had to cough up the cash for).

Yes, after a hard day's work, a good ale in one hand and a handful of woman in the other kept Sesshomaru happy. Well, they kept him satisfied at least. What made him really happy (which was kind of hard to tell seeing as how his face showed about as much emotion as a toilet seat (or some other inanimate object) was that his hard day's workload was not only lessened, but ran smoother as well due to his incredible secretary, Higurashi.

Higurashi Kagome, 23, was truly a wonder in disguise. She had walked into InuTaishou and Sesshomaru's office two years prior, fresh from T University, and ready to make her mark in the world. She was the fastest typist Sesshomaru had ever seen. Well, for a human, that is. It was surprising to say the least that his father had hired her without any previous experience, but InuTaishou had said to Sesshomaru in confidence that he felt Kagome was special and that she would be good for their company.

And she was. She proved not only capable of answering the multiple phone calls they received hourly, but also organizing their mail, case files, general crap and keeping all of InuTaishou's 'girlfriends' from finding out about each other, etc. Not only that but she also seemed to be one of the only females in existence (at least in Sesshomaru's mind) that his father did not hit on. And that was saying something.

Ah, but yes, Higurashi Kagome was indeed an angel sent to them in the disguise of a secretary. Her hair was a silky-looking ebony, always held back in a tight bun. Large glasses adorned her petite nose and her clothes were rather shabby and unconventional for a secretary of such a great PI agency, but that's what made them unique; they were the only demon pair of detectives that allowed a human within their immediate presence, not to mention trusted said human with all of their agency needs AND who respected her. That was what really pissed off all of their competitors; TPI was number one in the industry and it was a lowly human who was basically making their agency so efficient.

Yes, indeed she made Sesshomaru's work life that much easier, especially when he had such a precise schedule for himself. A schedule which was usually very strict and very straightforward; no namby pamby stuff in the middle, just clean cut to the get go.

He would wake up at 6:30am, dress, take a two mile jog, come home, shower, have a morning wank, dress, grab a bagel, coffee and newspaper on his way to work and show up at the front door at precisely 8:17am.

All was right in the world when Sesshomaru stuck to his schedule.

However, today he was running late.

The alarm didn't go off until 7:00am, he didn't take his morning job, nor did he have his morning wank and instead high-tailed it through the shower, rushed through the coffee stand, grabbed a Glamour magazine instead of the newspaper, got stuck in the 8:30am rush to the metro, got looked at oddly for having a Glamour magazine instead of a newspaper and ended up in front of his agency's door at exactly 9:00am, forty-three minutes later then when he should have been there.

And if that wasn't warning enough to how bad this particular day would go, walking into his office would prove that the higher beings really did have it in for him in the form that his secretary was no where in sight.
