My Nightmare by Sesshomaru12262

It was a normal evening for Kagome. Quiet. Peaceful. She smiled as she touched the single flower of a chrysanthimum that was nearby. They were her favorite. She hadn't grown up in Tokyo, but in a small fishing town on the west side of Japan, where she lived until her father had died. She often missed the little town, the scents of the sea, of fish and water and wood, but mostly, she missed watching the sunset before her eyes.

The red and pink hues as the sky took it's last breath before it went to sleep. . . it was so much more than a sunrise could ever be. The ending of a day. . . the knowledge that no matter what happens, the sun will rise again in the morning. There were many things she didn't know in life, was sure that she didn't want to know, but of that she was certain. Every morning, without fail, the sun would rise, and the sun would set.

Which was why it was her favorite flower. The deep hues of red that faded in to pink reminded her that the sun would rise, even in the darkest of the nights, and light up her world again. She drew strength from the strength of nature. She supposed, however, that was part of her unique heritage, though. Kagome Higurashi was not a normal woman. The descendant Midoriko, of one of the greatest miko who had ever lived, she housed the power deep within herself to banish demons, cure the ill, and even raise the dead. However, all Kagome could manage was to steal the affliction from someone else's body and place it on to her own.

Kagome smiled, tipping her suitcase low to the ground before scopping it back up again, again on the otherside, like a dance as she nodded her head in a silent melody only meant for her. Life was dull, Kagome thought with a grin of contentment. She had all she wanted as the secretary of Travel Co. Good paycheck, good health. But every day had become a routine, like it was a worn out recording of her favorite song. Wake up, go to work, come home, sleep. Over and over again, she passed her days the same way.

She knew that it would soon come to bore her, as all of her other jobs had. But for now, it seemed alright.

A cry broke the silence that hung and held her in a trance, making her jerk in shock at the invasion of her solitude. A baby? Kagome wondered, looking around. There was nobody there to have a child, and she wasn't in a residential district. . .

Kagome heard the shrill cry grow closer as she walked towards an alleyway behind a chinese food take out joint. Maybe somone has their kid with them. . . she thought as she took another step forward, curiosity edging her on. Curiosity killed the cat. . . The old warning sprung in to her mind. Kagome grinned. And while the cat had nine lives, she only had one. Still, it did not slow Kagome as she turned, and was surprised to see no one there- save for a tiny screaming baby in a small woven basket.

Kagome dropped her suitcase and knelt down, quickly gathering the baby in to her arms. "Oh, you poor thing! C'mere, I'll hold you." Kagome cooed as she rocked the tiny creature in her arms, soothing it's tears. It hiccupped twice before it's breathing finally settled to a steady beat.

"There there." Kagome whispered with a smile as she patted it's back. "Where did you come from, huh?" Kagome asked, surprised when a dampness suddenly soaked through her shirt and touched her skin. Kagome held the baby a little farther away. . . and gasped when she saw that the babe's blankets were drenched in blood.

"Oh my god!" Kagome whispered in mortification as she pulled away the babies robes, staring in horror at the many stab wounds and slashes that marred the otherwise pale skin. The movement woke the little girl- In her nudity, Kagome was sure that the baby was female – and she begun to cry with a new fervor.

"Oh, shoo, poor little girl. Here, I'll take away some of your pain." Kagome promised as she invoked her own powers to steal the wounds from the child's body until she could get her to the hospital.

She knew that her powers were unpredictable, to say the least, but never, in all the time that hse had been using her powers to heal, had the reaction been quite so powerful. The tiny girl began to scream with a renewed fervor as the powers swept over her body, healing her and causing her to glow from deep within her own self. Kagome stared in a helpless awe as the girl's form began to change. . . her ears grew longer, more defined. Her incisors lengthened with each wail she released. Her transformation was complete a moment later- and a tiny, iris colored moon appeared on her brow, in strak contrast to the brown eyes and fair skin.

Kagome knew she shouldn't be so weirded out by it. . . she was a miko, for christ's sake. But still. . .

She supposed she did well for her first glimpse of a demon. After all, she didn't faint. . .

Kagome quickly grabbed the small woven basket she had found the little girl in and put her back in it, but not before a scrap of paper written in beautiful cursive, caught her eye.

She picked it up gingerly, surprised when a sudden calm swept over her, even with the baby's tears. She read the note once, twice, before her eyes settled on the little girl.

Please protect my sister.

Kagome's eyes widened. Protect? she thought. Just what had she gotten herself in to?
