The Accident

This is an idea I have had for a while now. It might take a few chapters to get into so bear with me. And please review, I'll take any recommendations. It's an old Inu/Kag fic of mine, but it's been changed so I could post it on this site.

I don't own Inuyasha unfortunately.

~Chapter 1: The Accident~

"Daddy... can we please go get some ice cream? I ate all my dinner... and you promised." The little girl pleaded, tugging on her daddy's shirt.

Mr. Higurashi smiled down at her. Even if she hadn't finished her dinner he would have still taken her. He enjoyed spoiling daddy's little girl, and that she definitely was. She wore everything she could of his, hats, glasses, shirts, and tried her hardest to be just like him. How could he not give something so sweet and cute whatever she wanted? "Well... I don't know... it's getting awfully late. Isn't it going to be past your bedtime soon?"

"But daddy... please?" She whined, lower lip stuck out in a pout. If this didn't work, nothing would, not that it ever failed. She had her daddy wrapped around her little pinky and knew it.

He couldn't help but laugh. She just looked so cute. How he of all people managed to create something so adorable was beyond him. It had to be the work of her mother. It was a shame she knew that she had him wrapped around her pinky. "Oh, now how could I say no to that? But what are we going to tell your mother?"

Kagome grinned and threw her arms around her daddy's waist. "We can bring some back!"

He snatched his hat off her head and placed it on his. "Hey!"

"What? I don't see your name on this hat. Do you? Don't you have your own hats that your mother gave you?" He asked playfully, knowing what the answer would be. She would forever be his little tomboy, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

"But those are girly hats!" She wined. "I don't like girly clothes. They aren't nice and you can't get them dirty. You know that! That's why I wear yours! Momma won't buy me what I want."

"Yes, but girls are supposed to wear girly things. You're supposed to be my little princess." He said slipping on her leather jacket that looked just like his.

She scrunched her face up and stuck out her tongue. "Am not."

"You're right, but you are my baby girl. Now go tell your mother we're leaving so we can actually leave." He said pushing her toward the kitchen.

Kagome ran into the kitchen and almost into her mother's belly. "I was beginning to wonder what you were both up to. Are you going to get your ice cream?" Her mother asked with a smile on her face.

She shook her head yes rapidly in excitement. "Mmhhmm. Daddy told me to come tell you that we are going. Do you want any ice cream mommy? Do you think Souta would like any?"

Mrs. Higurashi laughed; Souta wasn't even born yet and Kagome was already thinking about her brother. She really was going to make a great big sister. "No, I wouldn't like some, but thank you anyway sweetheart. And I will let you know when Souta is ready to eat some ice cream. You can't very well do it through me. Now don't keep your father waiting."

"I love you mommy." She said wrapping her arms around her neck and giving her a huge hug.

"I love you too, sweetie. Now be a good girl and take care of daddy. He needs a big strong girl like you to watch over him." She kissed her cheek and pushed her off.

Kagome looked up at her mom with wide eyes. "You really think I'm strong?"

A frown touched Mrs. Higurashi's lips for just a split second, but she quickly covered it up with a huge smile. "More than you'll ever now sweetie. Now go get you and your daddy some ice cream. Watch out and make sure you don't eat it too fast. Remember the headaches it gives you if you eat it too fast."

"Brain freeze! I'll be careful mommy! Love you!" She said as she bounded out of the room.

The ride to the ice cream shop was really uneventful. It was just a five-year-old girl singing to her dad's favorite songs, bouncing around in the car, even with the seat belt on. A father's joy in life, but still an uneventful drive.

When they got there she jumped out of the car and ran for the door and already waiting in line by the time her dad got out of the car. He just shook his head. That girl sure did love ice cream. Well, he wasn't sure if it was the ice cream or the toppings she put on it, but whatever it was, she was hooked. It was such a simple way to make her smile. He couldn't wait for his son to be born, any day now, so he could spoil him rotten as well.

When he walked up the cashier looked up at him questioningly. The girl had just made an outrageous order and she wanted to know if it was all right to give it to her. It was a lot of sugar to give a child of that size, especially this late. "She says she wants a banana split with Jelly Belly beans, rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, Reece's pieces, Nerds, heath bar, snickers pieces, strawberries, hot fudge, caramel, walnuts, caramelized pecans, whipped cream, extra cherries with vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream."

Mr. Higurashi looked down at Kagome and arched his brow in amusement. "That's it tonight? No extra chocolate, strawberry, and caramel topping?"

She squealed in delight. "I almost forgot! Thanks daddy!"

The lady looked at the man in disbelief. "Are you really going to let her have all that sugar this late?" His wife was going to kill him if the girl was up all night. She knew she would.

Mr. Higurashi smiled down to Kagome and then back up to the lady. "Could you say no to these beautiful eyes?"

The lady looked down at the bouncing child and smiled. She did have the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. "No, no I don't think I could. One banana split coming right up."

Of course Kagome didn't eat the whole thing by herself. She had a little help. Where else would she get such an idea for a sundae?

After a few laughs and giggles about her friends in kindergarten and mommy's soon to be vanishing belly, they finally left. "Don't forget to buckle yourself in."

"Daddy?" She asked sleepily.

"Yes sweetheart?" He replied, although he knew what she was going to ask. Why she thought she had to ask was beyond him, but perhaps it was because she knew he carried her to her bed whenever she fell asleep.

"Would you be mad if I sleep on the way home?" She asked as she rubbed her eyes to stay awake.

He laughed knowing this would be another night of carrying her up the stairs to her bed. She was the only child he knew that could take in that much sugar and still want to go to bed. It was the only reason he allowed these late night snacks. But of course, with her blood, it was to be expected. She was just like her daddy in that aspect. "Of course not. I love you."

"I love you too daddy." She managed to mumble out before she passed out against the window.

That was the last conversation they ever had. The car was brought to a sudden halt when it was t-boned in the driver's side door, a drunk who had passed out at the wheel to blame.

Kagome screamed as her body was abruptly jarred from her sleep, her head bouncing off her car seat. She could hear the most horrible crunching sound, along with glass shattering and the tires squealing. It was all happening so slowly. She saw the car's lights, but there wasn't enough time to scream. She could see the metal of the car caving in, seeing it crush her father, hear his screams muffled in with the sounds of the car being torn apart. The whole time, all she could do was watch, until the car came to a rest. But then again, she didn't want to look. She knew he was strapped in his seatbelt beside her, blood flowing out his mouth, and his body torn from the seatbelt holding him in position.

Kagome shook him with all her might, tried wiping off the blood from his mouth, and cried. Something was wrong with him and she knew he should not be asleep. "Daddy! Daddy! Wake up! You're hurt! Daddy, wake up!"

When she got no response, she knew she had to go get help. She unbuckled herself and ran out of the car, screaming to try and find help. "HELP! HELP ME!!!! MY DADDY'S HURT!"

A younger man slowly got out of the other car, holding his head, and walked over to Kagome. "Help is on the way little girl. I've already called for an ambulance. I'm so sorry." Looking at the consequences of his actions he almost felt like he was going to be sick.

He wasn't coming fast enough, so she ran over to him and started tugging on his shirt. He was an adult, he would be able to help! "But he won't wake up! And he got blood in his mouth!"

The man's already paled face drained some more color at the realization that his recklessness had most likely caused the death of this young girl's father before her very own eyes. The girl couldn't be more than five. "I am so sorry." There wasn't anything he could do. He was in no condition to try and help a dying man from dying, if he weren't already dead, which he probably was considering the driver's side was completely crushed. The little girl must have realized that he wasn't any use because she ran back to the car and clung to her father in desperation. He wanted to kill himself right now. He should have been the one that died, not her father.

When the ambulance arrived they had to pry her from her father's cold dead form, Kagome refusing to let him go. They said he had died, and when she asked them what that was, she was told he went to sleep and he was never going to wake up. "But I have to stay! What if he wakes?"

The paramedic came over to Kagome and sat down beside her in a separate ambulance. "Hi, my name is Kaede. What is yours?"

"My name is Kagome and I just turned five." She said, holding up all the fingers on her hand.

"Wow, five years old huh? What a big girl. I'm sure a big girl like you can remember her telephone number so that we may call your mommy and tell her to meet us at the hospital?"

Kagome frowned in disappointment. Her daddy was always trying to get her to remember that stupid number. She hadn't seen the point since she wasn't allowed to use the phone in the first place. "No." Then she remembered her wallet, just like her daddy's. "I got that in my wallet, in the car."

Hesitant to let the young girl back in the car again, she opted to go retrieve the purse herself. Her father might have been removed already, but she still didn't have to witness the gore more than necessary. A five year old child should never have to bear witness to something as horrible as her father's death right before their eyes. "I'll be right back okay? Stay here."

As the paramedic went to get her wallet, she watched the policemen handcuff the man in the other car, and put him in the cop car. She just couldn't figure out why. He was in the accident too, why weren't the doctors helping him too? When the paramedic returned with her wallet, and a pale face, she just had to ask. "Why are they taking that man away like that?"

Kaede hung her head and sat down beside Kagome. This child hadn't any idea what was going on . . . she just couldn't see, and she had to tell her. She wasn't looking forward to it. "He is the reason that your daddy won't wake up. He had too much alcohol to drink and shouldn't have been driving. It is against the law for someone to drive with too much alcohol in their bodies." When she said nothing, she continued. "Do you know why your daddy won't wake up?" Kagome shook her head no. "Well you know how you said he was hurt? Well, if a person's body gets hurt enough it makes their heart stop. Do you know where your heart is?" Kagome placed her hand over her chest and nodded. "Well when it stops, it is called dying; the person is no longer alive, and they stay like that forever, never coming back."

Kagome's eyes welled up with tears at the sudden realization that she was never going to get to see her daddy again. "I WANT MY DADDY!" She jumped up and out of the ambulance and ran. Ran from everything and everyone. The only person she wanted wasn't here, wasn't ever going to be here again.

Kaede watched in astonishment as the girl ran off too fast for eyes to follow. It had to be the adrenaline pumping through the little girls system. Whatever it was they had to find her, and quick. She was pretty banged up from what she could tell of her initial observations. She was only a child, she couldn't get that far.

Crying, running, she paid no attention to the people shouting her name, just ran. When her legs finally began to burn, she had to find a place to sleep. Not only was it dark, but she was also hurt, scared, and lost. She found herself a nearby tree and climbed up it, glad her father had taught her how. Curling up in a ball in the fork of the humongous tree she cried herself to sleep.
