Prologue

He felt drained, but he was alive and that was all that mattered. Well not really alive as he glanced at his ethereal claws. He needed a body. He floated upwards above the trees searching for a suitable host. He heard a loud mewling and floated towards the offending noise. It sounded familiar, but a large amount of time has passed since he had the pleasure of hearing and scent. A coppery scent wafted towards his nose, and made him smile.

'Blood. Still fresh. I could never forget the deadly aroma.'

A hiss informed him that his presence was known. The white cat-demon stared at him with fiery eyes, her paw over a small, still kit as other kits off to the side stared at him with fear. With his acute hearing he could sense that no heartbeat issued from the frail form of the kit.

'I'm surprised she can actually see me, let alone sense me. Not a stupid creature, this would do for now.'

Knowing that his time was limited, he leaned forward. There was a slight tug that began pulling him further and further in. The ethereal spirit that the mother cat-demon sensed had dissipated right before her eyes.

He opened his 'gray blue' eyes to the night as he felt the natural itch of wounds begin the healing process. 'Good,' he thought to himself, his demonic soul was accepted by the body. His new senses brought back memories of his past life. He could sense his 'mothers' confusion and stared up softly mewing. The confusion eased from her eyes and she leaned down towards the kit, licking him with her rough tongue as she purred in content. The other kits sensing the disappearance of the threat leapt to their mother's side and began suckling her for their meal. With all the warmth surrounding him, Inuyasha couldn't help but let his purr join the purrs of his new 'family'.

As soon as she opened her eyes she knew it was a mistake. Her room reflected the harsh light of the sun, hurting her eyes. She closed her eyes, trying to savor the darkness her eyelids held before a knock at the door made her think twice. 'It must be mid day by now,' she thought to herself.

"Get up", a cool voice ordered from the doorway.

'Why does he even bother to knock? He doesn't even wait for me to open it, oh right. I wouldn't open it for him.'

Keeping her eyes closed she did her best to ignore her bodyguard.

He stared at her prone form on the bed, his youkai senses fully aware that she was not asleep. His eyes lingered on her heart shaped face. The softness of the picture brought unwanted questions cascading into him mind. He growled, not liking where his thoughts were going or her disobedience, but then he sighed. 'Hadn't it always been like this?' he mused. He walked towards her bed intent on his purpose. She needed to get her ass out of bed now. 'Before I join her, and then...' He again mentally stopped himself.

"Kagome, get your ass out of bed now," he said.

She finally gave in, opening her eyes to the brightness of the mid day sun and an annoyed youkai standing above her. She gave him her sweetest smile before she ripped the blankets off of her body in a huff, belying her previous sweetness. She began to stand up before a strong hand pushed her back onto her bed.

"Before you start your waking rituals, let me inform you my dear princess that this is the third time you are late for your classes with Miroku and it's only Tuesday. Why do you insist on this? And more importantly why are you making me waste my time waking your ass up?" he asked in a stoic voice.

'Maybe because you're the most beautiful thing to wake up to,' she thought immediately. But then she remembered what an egotistical, cold bastard he could be.

"I don't see what's so important about these classes. There are more important things to do with my time", she stated simply, glaring at him.

"Such as waking up to only half of a day. You waste your day's princess," he replied. "Further more, your father commands that you enrich yourself in the teachings of the monk, aside from learning to control your miko powers. One day you'll be ruler (Oh Kami help us he thought) of Euthoria and it would help to be a competent one".

She sighed, knowing he would not tolerate further discussion. "I won't let it happen again, Sesshomaru", she said softly.

"Good". He left her to get ready for her class. She stared at his retreating figure, with a sly grin on her face. If Sesshomaru thought he had won her obedience, he was wrong.

She felt a slight pang of guilt for causing her body guard so much trouble, but she couldn't help it. More and more these days she was shirking her responsibilities, there was so much pressure on her and nothing seemed to make sense. Her father was pressuring her into too much, too fast. The rush of suitors was causing a new headache, on top of Miroku's teaching, the apprehension of responsibility to the throne, and then there was Sesshomaru. There would always be Sesshomaru.

"Sesshomaru", she let the name softly fall from her lips. She reminisced on happier times in the care of her body guard. Now there was only this cold bickering that took its place. She shook her head from such thoughts. She had played hooky today to escape all that. She had left the palace behind her and ran onto the grounds behind it. Untouched and pristine the forest offered her a sanctuary. Knowing she had made it out of the palace without being caught she slowed her movements to take in the beauty. She made her way to a clearing where she knew the grass to be softest.

Sitting down on the grass she fell onto her back. The clouds in the sky moved into pictures for her. She never got tired of being here.

'This is why you don't skip out on your classes Kagome,' he thought to himself, 'if you applied yourself maybe you would've been able to elude me. But I doubt it.' With a smirk he gazed at the young miko cloud gazing.

Years of experience made him very aware of his charge. He began to suspect foul play the moment she had surrendered quickly in their argument. Sesshomaru to a degree actually liked some of their arguments just because of the way Kagome got worked up. Her eyes would burn with an inner fire that attracted him, not unlike a moth to a flame. It was mysterious, her passion.

Not missing a beat he had stealthily followed her out of the castle and to an all too familiar clearing in the forest, not having the heart to turn her in. He knew of her troubles and the pressure her father put on her. Her face always showed him the truth of her emotions. His job was to protect the little miko, there was definitely nothing in his contract about having to make her do anything, such as attend class. He only woke her up today on the direct orders of the king. Although he knew at some point he would have to 'catch' her and take her to Miroku. The monk may be lecherous but his teachings were to be valued. It was honestly in her best interest.

"Sesshomaru," a barely audible voice called to him. 'Kagome' he thought, his golden eyes still trained on her. Without her knowing he let her have the peace he knew she needed. It wasn't so bad he thought, she was under his watch and nothing happened to Kagome under his watch.

'That blood! It was her!'

His small cat-demons' nose picked up the scent that drifted on a northern breeze. He leapt out of the huddle of sleeping kits and began running in the direction of the miko.
