Mirror of Time

Chapter one: Mirror of Time

She watched him, just as she had every night of...well, since she could remember, as he stared into that magical mirror of his. This mirror, held up by a single tree's dead, crooked, twisting branches, was no ordinary mirror, and of that she was very certain. She looked on as he watched her life pass by, not particularly what happened that day, which had been incredibly boring, but her rough childhood, mostly.

It wasn't always her childhood, not at all. It was just her LIFE in general really, her childhood was just the most...exciting...she guessed. Sometimes this silver-blue haired male, with his ancient armor of an odd design, would watch her and her friends, or even her as she slept peacefully.

It didn't frighten her at all that he watched her, quite the opposite actually. She felt...protected, in an odd sort of way. She, felt special, really, like when your high school crush compliments your new dress, or hair. She felt especially special when he reached out and stroked her face in the mirror when she was sad, or sleeping.

Odd thing was the fact that the points in time where he had stroked her face are when she started to feel better that day. Less saddened by her mother's death, felt more sure that her new friends were trust worthy, even when the pain of a scrape or some other wound stopped.

Today, somehow, was very different, however. Not only could she see the man with pointed ears and golden eyes, but she could hear him, feel him, everything. Also, the most startling difference tonight, was that he turned and took notice of her presence.

He turned very slowly, smiling an almost crazed looking smile, and he stood tall and proud. The nest thing she knew, he was walking slowly towards her. He ran his finger down the side of her face, then grasped her chin. She gasped in alarm as he pulled her forward until their lips were almost touching. His piercing eyes were like liquid gold, multiple shades swirled and danced in those eyes of his. He opened his mouth slightly, running a pink tongue over them before speaking.

"It's time. Wait for me." He murmured before shoving her away.

In that instant, that frightening moment in time, Kagome Higurashi woke, her skin covered in a thin layer of sweat. She had never heard him speak before, and he had never acknowledged her presence before, either. This male, already having been perfect and beautiful in everyway, became even more perfect. His voice had been sensual and velvety soft, yet held a bit of mystery. She sighed, knowing that he was just a figment of her imagination. Nothing more than a made-up character to appease her lonely soul, or so she thought at the time.

She had to catch her breath before she grudgingly sat up and lifted herself from the warm cocoon she called a bed. Slowly, as she thought about the dream, she dressed for school. She wondered if he watched her, even now, as she changed her clothes. The thought caused her to blush and she hurried to dress. It wasn't as if she didn't want to go to school, anyway. She was a straight A student, though she wasn't popular at all. Quite the contrary, she was one of the most feared and unpopular at the school. She merely wanted to figure out why her dreams had changed so drastically, so suddenly.

She shrugged her petite shoulders as she gave up thinking on it, and raced down the stairs. On the way out the door she gave her adopted son, Shippou, a quick hug and kiss, and left.

Shippou, a smart child almost four years old now, was a kitsune demon. He had already started walking to school with Kirara, his best friend. Kirara wasn't any ordinary demon, but a fire cat that only demons could truly understand. She spoke in grunts and growls, and the occasional meow now and then. Shippou, though still demon, was bilingual. He spoke both in the ningen(human) language, and the youkai(demon) language.

Kagome was proud of her adopted child, having only been able to adopt him because no human wanted a demon child, and hardly any demons ever adopted any children. Shippou had loved her immediately; happily he loved her friends as well.

On that thought, Kagome scowled as she neared the school She could already hear her usual greeting. This greeting was very strange to others, but she was use to it. Sango and Miroku were yelling at Kouga, who grew unbearable when Kagome wasn't around. It was always Kagome this, Kagome that. The obsession with her being was flattering at first, but now it was merely annoying. Especially due to the fact that Sango, her best friend, was usually overly-protective of her and tended to attack Kouga at random times.

Sango wasn't all that feminine in most people's eyes, since it was widely known that she was a master of most weaponry. However, to others she was very much a woman. She had the curves and the feminine grace and elegance. Long, slender legs showed plainly from her almost knee-length dark blue skirt. Her hair was usually down, but tied at the very end in a loose bun, and her eyes were always watching anyone she came across. She was shy to most anyone, not including her closest friends, and even with them she was mostly on the quiet side. The most talkative she ever was, was when the sun just rises or sets, but this was due to her bird demon blood.

Miroku, Sango's excessively perverted boyfriend of almost five years now, was quite the opposite. He loved to cause large scenes, the bigger the better to him. These scenes, which usually involved groping Sango's rear, was designed to embarrass Sango out of her mind. She tended to blush prettily after screaming and attacking him in public areas. His hair was the same color as Sango's, a blue-black color that it seemed only demons and holy figures had. His hair was about shoulder length, but since it was always tied back in a tight ponytail it was hard to tell. His eyes, unlike Sango's brown ones, were violet and had cat-like pupils. It was Sango's favorite physical feature of his, she would say it was exciting, with him being a cat and she a bird.

Then there was Miroku's best friend, Kouga. Kouga's ebony hair reached down to the middle of his back, even in that high pony tail he always wore. His eyes were more wild and canine, a light blue color that had most girls mesmerized. He also had a brown, scruffy tail that tended to wag constantly when Kagome was nearby. He was, on all accounts, a perverted wolf, being friends with Miroku, Kagome could understand that Kouga would be so perverted.

This also was referring to the fact that Kouga was a wolf youkai, just as Miroku was neko, and Sango was bird. Miroku followed just about all of Kouga's orders, due to the fact that Kouga had saved Miroku from near death. The guy was just about Kouga's shadow, unless Sango was nearby. Those three had been friends even before Kagome came along, and all three were very popular, unlike Kagome.

Kagome was referred to as 'Scar' pretty often by those who didn't know her too well, due to the scar that ran from about half an inch above her right eye down to her cheek bone. Though you could only see part of the scar, since Kagome grew out her bangs to cover that eye. Rumors of where the scar came from varied. From an attack by a murderer, to a dog attack, to she fell and hurt herself on a broken glass. Either way, the rumors weren't true at all.

The truth was far worst than those rumors.

Far more terrifying.

And she's reminded of it every time she looks in the mirror.

~*~Flashback~*~

Kagome was only about seventeen years old, a smiling young teen that excelled at history and demons 177. She had been celebrating mother's day with her mother, coming home from shopping. Kagome's brother sat in the passenger seat next to their mother, and her mother was driving.

Kagome had chosen to sit in the back seat that day, since she liked to sleep in the back seat from time to time. She was the only one without a seatbelt on, and the only one without an airbag. She, instead, was laying on her side dozing away the thirty minute drive home.

A wretched noise woke her, a screeching noise that seemed to go on forever. Then a crashing sound, and she sat up just in time to see the rolling eighteen wheeler hit the car. Time stood still as she cried out for her mother and brother. She saw the glass break and shatter, a large chunk hitting her in the eye, but she didn't feel it. She saw her mother's blood splattered on the airbag, and her brother's limp body unmoving as he lay against his own.

The sound of police and ambulance went unnoticed by her as she felt tears go down her face. She touched her cheek, slowly, gently. She looked at her tears only to find the blood of her right eye had been pouring out as well.

The last thing she felt that day was the hands of a fireman pulling her out of the car, and the last thing she heard was "We've got one survivor!"

~*~End Flashback~*~

Kagome shook her head, clearing it of the memories. She was pulled back into the wretched claws of reality, safe and sound with her friends nearby. She sighed at her still arguing friends and let out a small wave of purification, just enough to cause Kouga to topple over, Sango to squawk in fear, and Miroku to let his tail loose. The three turned angry looks at her but she only smiled.

In her sudden surprise, Sango's wings had come out; her instincts had told her to fly from the holy powers. Luckily, Sango's shirts all have holes in the back just in case this may happen. She let out a frustrated chirp and glared at Kagome before she chanted a concealing spell. Her wings disappeared in a flurry of feathers and left behind only tattoos.

Miroku, having an awfully hard time calming down his tail, hissed lightly, but not angrily at Kagome. Truthfully he saw this coming a mile away. Kouga, however, had not anticipated this, though he should have, and had to get up off the floor and dust himself off.

Kagome smiled. "Let's get going! I heard we have a new student, remember?" Kagome said and all three demons stiffened. She looked around, afraid they had seen through the fake smile she had worked so hard to perfect over the many years since her mother's death.

Kouga scowled. "Yeah, I know." He said, annoyed at the mere thought. "His name's--"
