‡ Masked Pretense ‡

Growing up, I never understood much about sibling rivalry. I loved my brother Souta very much so, and the affection was returned more or less. I could never understand how people can hate their own blood and flesh. Until now. That is, until Kikyo came back. Now, whether I wish it or not, I am forced to learn about sibling rivalry first hand, because if not, I will lose the one I love, forever. ~Kagome

#Prologue#

Love is a hard thing to find.

Much harder to be kept.

~ You did not come ~

Perhaps however, the harder thing is to have a love returned. To be loved equally as much. To be loved at all.

And it hurts.

~ And marching Time drew on, and wore me numb ~

To know. To accept the fact that the one you love is not by your side. Is not there to comfort you and hold you up when you are falling. To offer his presence and assistance in a time of dire need of comfort.

~ Yet less for loss of your dear presence there ~

I have a love returned. Supposedly. But he’s never there.

And when he is, all he does is hurt me. Constantly reminding me of what I am not. Never to be saw as what I am.

He never tried.

~ Than that I thus found lacking in your make ~

But I hoped.

Hoped he’ll come to accept me. To see what I am willing to sacrifice just for him to look me in the eyes and hold me close.

Hoped he’d come to appreciate me.

Me.

But it did not come.

~ That high compassion which can overbear

Reluctance for pure loving kindness’ sake

Grieve I, when, as the hope-hour stroked its sum,

You did not come ~

At least, not until it was too late.

#Chapter 1#

The air was still, cold and crisp. As if a sudden movement or sound would snap the peace settling over the village. It seemed as everything was right in the world. As if, nothing mattered but that feeling being held. It was such a tranquil moment that was captured within a single shot.

“Oh my god. Kagome, this is such a masterpiece!”

A young woman stood at a waist level desk, elbows on the counter, supporting her raven head. Another young woman, slightly taller and more well fit, stood next to her, jumping up and down, seemingly excited about something of importance.

“You’ll win the contest for sure!” Sango, apparently the more hyped one, shouted.

“Mmmhmm” was all Kagome managed out.

“What’sa matta Kag?” inquired the worried friend. “If it’s that stuck-up boyfriend of yours I’ll kick his ass all the way to Manch-“

“Hey, what’s up?”

A face popped up around the corner of the door, lit by a boyish grin. Out stepped an attractive young man, clad in black. His violet-black hair flung wildly behind his shoulders.

“Hey ‘yash.” Mumbled Kagome

“Aw, not happy to see me?” teased the young man.

“Of course not, what have you done to her you fu-“ Sango was again cut off by Kagome’s hasty comment.

“Er, of course I am.” Pasting on a cheerful smile Kagome slid under Inuyasha’s arm, poking her head out to look into his face with loving eyes.

“feh.”

Kagome and Inuyasha have been going out for nearly three years now. However, it was a rather well kept secret amongst a few friends. Inuyasha, being the most popular teenager in their high school, intended on keeping his reputation “clean”. And that meant no Higurashi’s in his company.

“Well, how is the most popular couple doing today?” A new voice piped up.

“Oh hey Miroku. Everything’s fine. How’s life?” Inuyasha said casually.

A conversation was sparked up. But no one seemed to notice the loneliness haunting Kagome’s eyes. Worry seemed to be etched in her mesmerizing blue-sapphire eyes.

“Oh really? I never knew that Kouga found a new girl….”

Three years. Three years with the man she loved. She should be happy. Right? Then why does her heart feel so empty? Aching?

“Yeah. I heard she was a hot one….”

Inuyasha and Kagome met all the way back in junior high. Back then, they were just small crushes. Neither talked to the other much. Besides, they were in different classes. What could they possibly become?

“Feh. He’ll get dumped by the end of the day most likely….”

But they did. And they were happy for a while. Together.

But that all changed when Inuyasha saved Kikyo from falling down the stairs. Kikyo was the most popular girl in the school, in fact, the most popular teenager. It would be a lie to say that Kikyo never batted an eye in Inuyasha’s direction again after that. No, in fact, she seemed quite entranced. And of course, saving Kikyo was no simple feat itself. Especially to be recognized by her as well. Thus, began Inuyasha’s social life amongst the “higher class”.

Of course, that didn’t mean anything to Inuyasha and Kagome. At least, not at first. They were still happy together, enjoying lunch and free time with each other. But then a week later, Kikyo showed up at her doorsteps and claimed to be her long lost sister.

“No way! He can’t be dating her! She’s way too good for him….”

Hah. Who’d ever thought? Her, being related to miss popularity. It all seemed too good to be true. To finally find her long lost sister. Another female in the house to talk to, to confide in.

Really, who was she fooling?

She became Kikyo’s slave. Technically. Her mother was overjoyed, making sure Kagome did everything, and anything, to please and make Kikyo at home. Of course that all changed after Kikyo snagged Inuyasha.

She just took him and went back to her father. Their father. The rich one.

“Yeah, I heard he did a replay of what happened between you and Kikyo….”

So from then on, to the public, Inuyasha and Kikyo were the couple. The real deal. And Kagome, Kagome was just the shadow that became invisible.

#Author’s Note#

Masked Pretense is a Sess/Kag fic. It starts out Inu/Kag though. With a tragedy. It’s an alternate universe, alternate pairing fic. So be warned.
