The Blind Date

"So Kagome will you do this for me," Inuyasha begged of his best friend.

Kagome sighed heavily. "Why should I? I'm happy living the way that I am and besides you are taking the lazy way out of this."

Inuyasha had begged Kagome all week long about going on a blind date and she still refused. What was bad was that he expected her to go on a double date with him and Kikyou. Kagome was not having that.

The last time she had gone out with the "couple" she had been forced to watch them make out for most of the night. And of course by making out, there was quite a lot of third base going on while she was in the room.

No, Kagome Higurashi had promised that she was never going to put herself in that same situation again. Hearing a string of "Oh yes, and harder," was not her idea of a good night out.

And she was expected to entertain a stranger she had never met before? No thank you. Kagome was a practical person. Inuyasha's tastes were not to be trusted. The only time he asked Kagome to go out on a date with someone was when he disliked the person and was trying to get rid of them.

Take his cousin Naraku for example. Now he was a freak of nature and the way that he continued to stare at her all the time, it was creepy. It was obvious why Inuyasha had asked her to take Naraku out, Naraku was annoying. And Kagome was too nice to say anything about it.

So she was going to steer clear of anyone Inuyasha tried setting her up with. She was capable of finding her own dates. Sometimes.

Okay so she hadn't had a date in a year and every boy at her high school tended to ignore her. She still had options and they were intimidated that was all. So what she was the most intelligent girl at school, she didn't have rabies or anything like that.

She sighed again. She was utterly hopeless. All her friends had partners to love them. She was the only lonely one.

"Look Kagome it's only like one Saturday right? You just have to come with us and keep my brother off my back. How bad could that be?"

The brother. The cold, cruel beast that was the heir to the Inutaisho line, the only youkai with the reputation to intimidate the most hardened of people. And Inuyasha wanted her to go out with him and stay with him for a whole night so that he and his girlfriend could have the time of their lives without being bothered.

The sad thing was that Kagome was most likely going to agree to go on the date. She was weak willed like that. She hated confrontations and tried avoiding them at all costs.

Of course with Inuyasha as a best friend it was better that she chose not to fight since he was very confrontational. She remembered this one time when they were kids and Inuyasha put ink in her hair because he got mad at her.

Kagome didn't know why they continued to be friends. It was just that he insisted that they needed one another and she agreed for whatever reason. Their small little group of friends was the guiding factor in her life, and though they were all very different, they fit together.

Kagome's thoughts turned to the brother that she was supposed to go out with. He was in college, his last year, and already had a job lined up for when he graduated. He had to be good looking considering his younger brother.

She sighed again. She knew exactly what she was doing; she was talking herself into agreeing to going out on that date. She'd be stupid for going, but then she'd be stupid for not going. It was getting out of the house for a night, partying instead of sitting at home reading all night long.

'But I like reading. I don't know that it's necessary to try and fit in all the time.' Kagome sometimes liked to fashion herself a loner. She wasn't. She loved hanging out with her friends, but she had to find some reason to explain her "lame" life.

"Okay Inuyasha I am really going to regret this but I guess I can go out with her brother Saturday night but let's not make this a habit. I give into you enough without having to suffer with every guy that you cannot stand. What would happen one day if I actually did fall for one of them?"

"Feh. What would make you think that'd ever happen. You're hopeless as it is."

"Are you saying that I can't get a boyfriend?" The nerve of him. Kagome stared out the window of her room, contemplating hanging up on her friend. He was always such a jerk to her, saying that she can't get anyone, and that she was a nerd and all other kinds of things. She was starting to believe him.

"Would you just shut up stupid? You know you're cute so quit acting like my opinion really matters okay?"

Kagome was in shock. Inuyasha must have been desperate to actually say that she was cute. He must really want her on this date with his brother so badly that he was being forced to be nice to her.

But all the doubts from before about his words were keeping Kagome from believing that he was speaking the truth now. Or maybe he was and she was just being delusional about her own looks. She was confused.

"So are you really going to come or am I going to have to drag you out of that house Saturday night to come out with us? I need you to help me Kags. You're my best friend and the only one who could maybe deal with him. I promise he won't harm you or anything."

Oh that was encouraging. The last thing Kagome needed was to know that Inuyasha's brother had attacked girls before and harmed them. She was insane to even think about going on that date if it were true.

Who would help her if something went wrong. Kagome knew that Kikyou would never be parted from her dear Inuyasha's lips, even if they weren't too busy staring into each others eyes all the time.

No she was going to have to rely on herself to get out of a sticky situation if she was able. But why was she going to get herself into that situation anyway? Wouldn't it just be better to actually incorporate the word no into her vocabulary and actually mean it?

It was worth a try at least. She opened her mouth to try just that when a thought occurred to her. The brother was supposed to be much older and it could only boost her to actually be seen out in public with him on a date.

It was not as if she were marrying the guy. And if they were at the movie theatre, they wouldn't have to talk or anything like that. It was a win - win situation for all of them.

There didn't have to be interaction and they all had benefits, well some would get more benefits than others. Immediately Kagome thought about Inuyasha and Kikyou the "perfect couple."

She had no doubts what they were going to be doing. And how uncomfortable that was going to be for her. So maybe it wasn't it good idea. But she was tired of thinking about it.

"Okay Inuyasha. I'll do it."

"Thatta girl. I knew you'd come in for me. I promise you, it'll be a very good night, one you will not forget."

He hung up. Kagome looked at her image in the mirror. 'I just hope I don't regret this.'

But it was too late now. Once Kagome Higurashi gave her word about something, she kept it. If her night turned out to be miserable then she would only have herself to blame for her failure to think straight about any subject.

"I won't give in to despair. This date won't be so bad. It is only for one night after all. I can handle that. I've done things like this before." But she couldn't ignore the odd feeling in the pit of her stomach, telling her something was going to happen.

Whenever she got butterflies, she knew something was going to happen. She was never able to tell the difference between the good feelings and the bad but it was there and she was never able to ignore it.

Something about going on this date was going to change her. It was the only explanation because that was what she was thinking about. Wasn't she?

Since hearing about Anime Spiral being down, I had to bring over some of the stories from that site. I will dredge up Baby Drama when I find the disk somewhere. This one I never finished so now I will.
