Prologue:

For centuries the red moon had always been a sign for the bringer of death. Those who saw the deadly sight hid for fear of losing their lives to the powerful lull of endless sleep it promised. In the distance a spine-chilling cry was heard from miles around as a blood red moon sat high in the midnight sky.

In a clearing two lone figures stood, one wounded, breathing heavily with sword in hand, the other towering menacingly over him, a malicious smirk graced his inhumanly beautiful face. Predatory red eyes gleamed in the full moon light awaiting his victim's next move. His unnaturally pale skin seemed to glow in night giving the appearance of an angel of death.

"You bastard" the silver haired man snarled baring his elongated fangs. His sun gold eyes burned in loathing for the man standing before him.

"You say that now with conviction but I gave you eternal life, trained you and cared for you. Loved you as my own." Red eyes flashed in anger at the insolent, would be, child before him.

"You call making me into a monster, love? You stole my life away! You turned me to try and force my brother into becoming yours! You lied to us, saying you could reverse the curse if he would join with you. If it wasn't for your twisted fascination with my brother, we would be normal human beings, living normal lives as a family, not the blood thirsty creatures of the night that you made us into!" Bitter tears poured from his eyes in anger and betrayal.

"Your brother is mine and I have always taken what belongs to me. I will have him once I have finished with you." His clawed hand flexed in anticipation, eager to feel the man's blood drip from their deadly tips. "You foolish child, you thought to save him by killing me? You can barely hold your sword now, much less attempt to take my life." He sneered.

"You never had a chance little one and I will help you to rest so that you will feel pain no more." He murmured, his eyes softening toward the wounded man like a father scolding a child.

Golden eyes flashed red in anger at his words. "You will never have my brother, you son of a bitch! As long as he has breath in his body, Sesshomaru will not let you let win, nor will I!" he screamed as he charged at the figure clad in black.

The man disappeared within a blink of an eye before his sword could penetrate the cold heart within his body. Piercing red eyes gleamed in hunger to spill the blood of the man who thought to defy him. His dark form levitating high above paused for just a moment before attacking his prey.

The golden eyed man's senses were screaming "danger" as he felt the approaching threat to his life but was not skilled enough to pin point where his attacker was coming from. He searched around frantically his were dull from the loss of blood from his wounds. His heart ached from the words thrown at him by his so called "father". 'I can not let you win you monster. My brother's and my son's lives depend on it.'

A picture of baby boy with laughing gold eyes and silver hair flashed in his mind's eye.

A sliver of fear shot up his spine as he looked up towards the night sky. His eyes grew wide in terror at a sight that he only knew from the giving end, never on the receiving. He tried to move but was held immobile by an unknown force. Red eyes pierced his very soul and he knew death was coming.

The scream lodged in his throat replaced by a gurgling sound. Gold eyes met red as time seemed to have stopped. His body began to feel cold as he slowly looked down between their bodies. Tears fell from his eyes as the bright gold color began to fade. 'I have failed, please forgive me my son ... goodbye brother.' were his last thoughts as he drew his last breath.

Watching with a sick sense of pleasure the figure clad in black with blazing red eyes smiled in satisfaction. His clawed hand was embedded deep in the chest of the young man with eyes like the sun. He viciously ripped out the heart that had stopped beating and turned to face his newcomer. A sadistic smile graced his lips as he held out the man's heart.

"For you my pet, now there is nothing to come between us." His voice carried like the wind.

The newcomer's eyes narrowed in disgust as he looked at the heart that was being held out to him. He had sensed his brother's distress and had come to investigate. Instead he found his so called "father" and he could no longer sense his brother's aura. Something was terribly wrong.

"Whose soul did you steal this time?" the newcomer asked with contempt in his voice. He could not see the human being since the man blocked his view.

"Why don't you come see, my pet? I'm sure you will be most surprised. It is my gift to you." A knowing smile lit his shadowed features as he turned to look down at the corpse on the ground.

Sesshomaru's gaze followed his as he slowly took a step closer, confused. His eyes widened slightly at the crumpled form lying face down in the dirt as a sliver of dread crawled up his spine. His heart began to race when he saw usually shiny as silk silver hair now matted with blood and dirt. He felt his entire being scream in rage and denial at the knowledge he was looking at his missing brother's slaughtered form.

"NOOOOO!" Sesshomaru threw back his head and roared. Tears filled his eyes as he turned to face the one responsible. "What have you done?" he snarled. Sun gold eyes bled red and elongated fangs bared like a rabid dog. Flexing his clawed hand he waited with barely restrained rage.

"Only what I should have done from the beginning, remove the one who did not appreciate you as I do." His eyes softened for a brief moment.

At that moment something deep within Sesshomaru snapped as a mournful, earth shattering cry tore from his body. In a blind rage he flew at his brother's murderer, fangs bared and claws slashing. "I will tear out your heart and leave your body to be ravaged by the creatures of the night you son of bitch!"

Deftly he dodged the attack and in a blur of black had Sesshomaru pinned to the ground. With a calm that did not reflect in his ruby red depths, he leaned in close, his gaze locked on the face that haunted him so. "I did what was necessary for us. You will understand in time." He murmured, his soft lips brushed slightly on snarling ones as he spoke those words.

`

With a strength that he did not realize he possessed, Sesshomaru forcefully threw the offending man 20 feet from his shaking body.

"Now, now little one. Calm yourself" the man cooed as he stood dusting himself off. His eyes blazed with promise as his body shimmered slightly, then faded into the night. "I will be watching... waiting for you... my pet."

'I will avenge my brother's death and spend the rest of my undead life hunting you, if I have to. When I find you, you will pay... Naraku...'

A lone figure stood tall and proud on a rooftop of the tallest building overlooking the city below. His features never betraying the heart rendering memory of his only brother's body lying alone, lifeless on the cold, hard ground, centuries ago. His once warm, beating heart gripped in the claws of a sadistic monster that had created them both.

Memories never forgotten replayed in his mind of a once innocent and loving young man that filled his life with happiness. His younger brother, so full of life with laughing gold eyes and the ignorance of a child brought a pang of guilt to his heart for not being able to protect him.

Sun gold eyes that had grown hard from hundreds of year's hardships and loneliness, bled red at the remembrance of a promise that he had yet to fulfill. Many times he had come close but the object of his hatred and wrath eluded him at every turn. He would not rest until the vile creature he sought writhed in agony at his feet and his soul cast into hell where it belonged. He would fulfill his promise no matter what and no one would stand in his way.

For his only brother and a nephew that he had never known, he would search to the very depths of hell to carry out his promise. He would not fail, could not for their sakes. He could no longer feel or love, for the very ones he shared those feelings with had been ripped from his life without warning.

Leaping from the building he would continue his search as he had for so many centuries. Naraku would pay with his very life for taking the only ones that ever mattered to him or ever would. His brother was forever lost and would never return.

"Inu Yasha..." he whispered as he disappeared into the night, leaving the image of an avenging angel.
