.:Fate Never Could Be Kind:. by Caramel*Hunny

Prologue

The group of friends and warriors made camp at Kaede's hut that night. There was a storm brewing not to mention they desperately needed a break, despite the fact that InuYasha refused to admit it to the others. He followed his part of the ritual they had when they visited the old hag: sitting on the roof of the hut. He remembered a time when everything was peaceful, but that was before Kikyo had died. He knew that times with Kagome, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo were happy, but they didn't dare compete with the times he spent alone with Kikyo; his love. He smiled, reminising in a memory of a time when he thought he had loved Kagome. For a while it seemed so right to him to finally find someone to love. He couldn't stop the flame of jealousy that burned within him at the thought of her with another male, but he knew that now as a brother's protective nature. It would have surprised the others to know how thoroughly he had thought this through. He was sure though, Kikyo was his soul mate, and despite his promises to Kagome, he would do anything to protect her. Dead or alive, his choice would be Kikyo. InuYasha decided everyone was quiet enough that it was safe to sneak away from the hut to see Kikyo. He hadn't seen her in what seemed like an eternity and he burned with longing. He had no idea Kagome was watching him curiously as he abandoned camp.

Not to be left out of the loop, Kagome slipped out of the hut without rousing her friends. 'Where is he off to?' she thought as she followed InuYasha. Kagome's priestess abilities had grown immensely and she was able to track InuYasha's aura easily while remaining hidden in the shadows. She came to a grove of trees and pulled a branch back to behold a view she wished she'd never seen. Kikyo in InuYasha's arms...'Wait! This isn't right,' her mind protested, 'He's not supposed to be here...He's supposed to love me.' Silent tears streamed down her face staining them with a salty moisture. Her heart was shattering, why was this happening to her? What had she done wrong; she would do anything to fix it so that InuYasha would come running for her affections instead of Kikyo's. That was when she heard the two lovers' conversing, "What have you decided, InuYasha?" Kagome heard Kikyo asking in apprehension. 'Is she really that worried InuYasha won't pick her or is she lying?' Kagome couldn't tell. "Kikyo, love, you know I care deeply for Kagome, but it is not the same way I care for you. I tried to love her, but all I feel is a brotherly love. With you Kikyo, I feel a flame ignited to last in our passion forever." Kagome sneered at her love's confession. It was all so romantically discusting! He should have been saying those things to her..."Oh InuYasha! I love you! Please, make me wait no longer to be yours!" 'No, no, no!' None of this was right. It should be 'I love you Kagome' not Kikyo. 'I should be the one professing my love!' Kagome shook violently at the sight of the lover's embrace and passionate kisses. She began to feel weak in the knees, but she wouldn't let InuYasha see her like this. Oh no, she wasn't going to be the weakling. Kagome would make it back to camp and pretend as if nothing happened, while in her mind she would start rearranging her feelings so that she could numb out the pang of loss she felt. With every step, the hut seemed to become further in distance from her. She suddenly came face to face with the prickly blades of grass that were blowing in the wind. The wind was singing a mournful song to her and she was quickly met by darkness. Kagome would never know how she managed to get back into her sleeping bag and she didn't care either. Her only reocurring thought was to mend her broken heart.

The next morning InuYasha was back at camp at his post on top of the roof. He could not shake the eerie feeling that had crept over his meeting with Kikyo the previous night. 'What the hell was it?' He wasn't intending to have a headache over a feeling and set it aside in his subconscience. Kagome awoke to the sweet smell of Sango's cooking. She tried to act normally, but seeing InuYasha only forced her back into memories she longed to forget. Kagome could faintly hear the voices of her friends asking if she was alright, but she had already blocked them all out. Her subconscience reasoned that they weren't important. All she could see was InuYasha and Kikyo. Alone. Together. Kagome excused herself and returned back to Kaede's hut. 'What'll I do now? How can I continue searching for the shards with him?' A lone tear slipped down her face.

Meanwhile, Naraku gazed upon the broken priestess with a keen interest. "Thank you Kanna. That is enough." The little, pale girl turned her mirror away. 'Hmm, I could indulge myself in this young girl. She would be a fine mistress.' Onigumo's thoughts were brushed aside, 'Ha! I can use her to gain the shards...' Naraku set down to work, plotting a way to trap and take Kagome for his own. Chuckling softly at his own devious ideas he thought, 'This is better than I had originally planned...I can get rid of Kikyo, collect Kagome for myself, and watch them all suffer. Yes, this will be the best way to ruin InuYasha.'

A/N: Hey, this is the prologue to the story. Basically, introducing you to the plot, which I already have planned out. Yes, I happen to realize that this prologue is similar to many other Sess/Kag fanfictions, but I intend to throw in a couple of twists and turns into this plot! Hope you enjoy! Please, feel free to rate & review!! Thank you in advance. Later!
