Big Things Come In Small Packages.

It was a cold winters night in Tokyo, Japan. A young 20 year old girl named Kagome Oniwashu ( Her Husband's Lastname. I dunno Sesshoumaru's real lastname, so I'm just using this one. ) was laying along her cream couch, flipping through the channels of the television boredly. She pulled on the blanket that covered her slim figure, holding it over her shoulders. "Sheesh, I wonder when he's gonna get home. I hate it when he works so late. I had to eat dinner alone again," Kagome said to herself, stroking the head of her husky that lay on the floor beside the couch. The male canine rolled onto his back and kicked his feet into the air, whining pathetically at Kagome. "Oh, you're such a baby, but you're so adorable," she said, scratching her pets stomach, causing his leg to kick wildly. Kagome stopped, and sat up in her seat, leaning her elbows on her knees, her chin laying in her palms. "Gosh, it's so cold out tonight." She said quietly, now standing. "I wonder what Sango's doing." She walked to the kitchen, picking up the cordless phone as she passed it. She began to dial numbers with her thumb as she opened the fridge and dug around in it, now holding the phone between her left shoulder and her cheek. After about four rings, Sango picked up. "Hello?" She said, sounding a bit tired. "Sango! Hey! It's Kagome," Kagome chirped. "Oh, hey, Kagome, what's up?" "Oh, nothing. Sesshoumaru's not home yet, so I got bored and decided to call you." Kagome sighed into the receiver. Sango giggled. "Oh well, that's what you get for marrying a Detective." Kagome rolled her eyes and sighed, yet again. "I know, I know. It's better than being married to a total perve, who's obsessed with girls butts." The two girls laughed. "Yeah, but I got ol' Miroku whipped." Sango said between laughs. Kagome quieted. "Yeah.. Atleast your guy's home." She looked at her dog, Louis, who was panting as he sat before her on the floor, drooling on the tile. Sango scoffed. "Kagome, Sesshoumaru's an awesome husband, and you know it. Atleast he has a job, a good job. Miroku might get fired from his bartender thing."

Kagome shook her head, her eyes closed. "It's okay, Sango. I'm sure he'll get a better one, soon enough. Anyway, I better get going. Louis needs to go for a walk." Kagome said, patting the Husky's head. "In this weather? You'll turn into a Snowman, but by all means, go on. Dogs gotta pee." Sango chuckled. Kagome smiled. "Yes they do. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Bye." "Bye."

Kagome hung up the phone and stood to her feet, grabbing the leash from the hook that laid on the table. She latched it onto Louis and walked to the door, picking up her coat, and scarf. The two of them walked out and shut the door behind them. Kagome wrapped her red scarf around her neck, and pulled her coat onto each arm, buttoning it up at the front. "Come on, Louis. Let's try and get back before Sessy." The girl and the dog walked down the icey sidewalk. Kagome's nose had become a light pink, from the cold air that touched her sensitive flesh. Kagome began to hum peacefully, as her brown eyes became attracted to a black haired girl a few years younger than her. A little, raven haired girl was wrapped in her arms, as she struggled, tiredly, to carry her up the snowy pavement. "Oh. How sweet." Kagome said, smiling halfway. She continued on with her walk, circling the small, quiet neighborhood.

Kagome got back home and stepped up the white painted porch steps, taking notice of a small lump curled into a ball near the door. "Huh?" Kagome looped the dogs leash around the doorknob, and knelt down beside the breathing thing. She pulled down the shreaded blanket that had been wrapped around the tiny figure, to discover a feeble child, shivering viciously, as her teeth chattered from the cold air. "Oh, my!" Kagome gasped, gathering this little girl up into her arms. She moved the child into her left arm, and took the leash from the handle, letting it fall down her hand and around her wrist. She turned the knob and entered the warm house, closing the door quickly after. "We need to get you warmed up." Said the worried Kagome, dropping the leash onto the floor. She rushed to the couch and laid the girl down on the cushion. She hurried into the kitchen and took a glass, holding it under the water faucet, turning the handle to the red line, allowing the hot clear liquid to flow into the crystal glass. Kagome bit down on her lip as she walked back to the living room, sitting the child up. She put the glass to her thin, pale white lips and tilted it up, the warm water splashing onto the girls tongue and sliding down her throat. The childs eyes were glazed over, but her chattering of the teeth had stopped. Kagome wrapped her blanket around the childs trembling form tightly, stroking her hair softly. "It's going to be okay, little one. I promise. Don't worry." Kagome said with a soothing tone.

Soon, the child's shivering had come to an end, and she rubbed her eyes with tight fists. Her large blue eyes studied the woman in front of her, who had been staring at her intently. Kagome's lips curved into a smile of relief, as she said, "Hey there. You feelin' okay, sleeping beauty?" The little girl remained silent, gazing upon Kagome with frightened eyes. She unpinned a small piece of paper from the side of her skirt, handing it to the adult. Kagome tilted her head and sat down on the couch, unfolding the paper. It read...

Dear, sir, or miss, or both. This is my daughter, Evanescence. I'm only sixteen, and I cannot care for her by myself, anymore. My parents kicked me out of my house, and now I'm living on the streets. I have nowhere to go, and I can't let my little girl grow up this way. I want her to live a normal child's life. Please, if you will. Take good care of my baby. She's very quiet, and very fragile, so be patient with her. Sincerely, Fantine.

Kagome heaved a sigh when she finally finished with the letter, crumpling it up into her palm. She turned her head and looked down at Evanescence. "Well, I guess you're staying with us from now on. This isn't gonna be easy. I thought I'd have a few more years before I became a mother, but.. I've already grown attached to ya'." Kagome smile. "I hope Sessy likes you. He better, too. Because he's gonna be livin' with you for quite some time." She picked up Evan and carried her into the bathroom. She took the little girls torn clothes off and dropped them at the side. She sat Evan in the warm water and poured a drop of shampoo into her palm. She began to scrub the dirt that caked into Evanescence's dark locks. "My, my, my. What to do with you." Kagome whispered to herself quietly, now rinsing the young child's hair.

Finally, after finishing the bath, Kagome wrapped a towel around Evan and pulled her out of the water, and onto her lap. She took another towel and began to rub Evan's head with it gently, drying her hair. "Okay, now, you must be hungry." She said, taking one of her T-shirts and pulling it over Evan's head. She looked so tiny in Kagome's shirt, well, tinier. She took the child's hand in hers and walked out of the bathroom, and into the kitche. She picked Evan up and sat her in a chair. She fixed a Peanut butter and jelly sandwich for Evanescence and set it in front of her with a glass of milk. She watched as the girl gobbled up the sandwich, and gulped down the milk in barely ten minutes. "Wow. You really WERE hungry." Kagome shook her head with a sigh. "I hope Sesshoumaru doesn't mind.. I mean.. I've never really seen interact with children, other than Rin. But she's with a new family now. Sesshoumaru should love you! You look just like Rin, anyhow." Kagome giggled, tapping Evan on the tip of her nose.

Evan finished with her food, and Kagome picked up, cradling her in her slender arms. She carried her to the couch and sat down with her new daughter set in her lap. The two watched television for about twenty minutes. Suddenly, Kagome heard the rumbling of Sesshoumaru's car engine.

Kagome smiled nervously, chewing on her lower lip. She rested her chin upon Evan's left shoulder, sighing deeply. Just then, Sesshoumaru opened the front door with a wide smile on his face, taking his trench coat from his shoulders and hanging it on the long stick that held jackets, and other coats. "Hello, Kagome. Sorry I didn't come home earlier." Sesshoumaru went on, as he got closer to the couch, noticing not one black hair covered head, but two. "We caught that serial killer that's been hiding arou--" He choked, and his jaw slightly dropped at the sight of the child in Kagome's lap. She looked up at her husband and smiled, talking through clenched teeth, her nerves rising. "Sessy! Great you're home. Guess what?! I.. Adopted a kid while you were at work today! Heh, heh."
