Chapter 1

Give her back!

The castle's night lanterns flickered slightly as the breeze toyed with them. All of the occupants, including servants, had retired for the evening...except for one. Shuffling across the wooden floors of the palace, Jaken grumbled to himself as he quietly exited the castle. Stumbling slightly, the toad made his way beyond the gate and towards the mountains.

Tonight would be the night. Soon all things would be put right; those pathetic humans and that manipulative Hellhound whore would be gone forever! His master would not fall to the same fate as his father; Jaken would see to that! He had been visiting the witch that would help him for that past month, and it had been costly. In the end, the trade for her help had been the staff of two heads. The toad was sorry to part with it seeing how it had been a gift, but such a sacrifice would be well worth it! He glanced at the castle once more before disappearing over the horizon.

"Soon you will be free, Lord Sesshomaru!" He swore as the sun began to rise.

*At the castle*

Servants woke and the usual morning bustle began. Shippo and Rin ran along the corridors, curious to their watcher's whereabouts. Upon entering the great hall, they immediately sought out their parents in the forest of legs and tails. A squeal of delight erupted from them as the familiar silver and black tails came into view.

"Mama!" Rin squealed as she launched into the demoness's arms. Shippo attacked Sesshomaru in the same fashion, laughing as the Taiyoukai growled playfully and tossed the kitsune into the air. The boy gasped as he rose, only to laugh harder as the fell into his father's waiting arms again.

"Goodness, Rin!" Kagome laughed as the girl's arms wrapped around her neck. "What on earth had gotten into the both of you?"

"We can't find Jaken, Mama." Shippo whimpered, seemingly hurt by their reluctant playmate's disappearance.

"You've checked already....asked the servants?" Kagome asked; a frown on her brow as the two children nodded. She looked to her mate in inquiry.

"Strange..." Sesshomaru murmured. It wasn't like Jaken to simply disappear. "You two go sit and eat. Your mother and I have matters to discuss."

Setting Shippo down, he nodded to Kagome as she released Rin and stood. With a subdued haste, they exited the hall and entered the library. Kagome closed the door and chanted softly, sealing the room to make sure no one overheard them. Sesshomaru was standing in the middle of the room in deep thought.

"Something doesn't feel right, Sesshomaru. Jaken has been acting strange all month, and at times I swear that he isn't even here." Kagome whispered as she approached him.

"I agree. At first I believed that he had been hiding from Rin and Shippo, but it goes beyond that. He's become increasingly hostile towards them, the guests while they were here, and you." Sesshomaru rubbed his eyes, his tail twitching slightly.

"We never thought much of his words. I mean...it's Jaken! We're used to his ranting by now." Kagome folded her arms against her chest as she spoke.

"Perhaps we should have paid more attention to his behavior." The Inuyoukai wondered aloud. He sighed deeply as Kagome's arms came around him, her forehead pressed into his back.

"I can't help but feel that something bad is going to happen, Sess." Kagome whispered against his back. He could feel her tremble against him, his eyes closing in thought.

"Do not worry, koi. I'm here." He whispered softly. They remained silent until a knock at the door broke the solitude of the library. Growling in annoyance, Sesshomaru kissed Kagome's forehead and growled out at the door. "Enter!"

"Your guests request an audience with you, my Lord and Lady." The servant whispered quietly. Sesshomaru nodded curtly and took his mate's hand, together they exited the library.

Upon entering the main hall, Kagome smiled brightly and Sesshomaru nodded lightly as the faces of Lord Karumos, Lord Toshiben, and the newly stated Lord Kouga. He flashed his usual, charming grin and bowed as did the others. The other two lords had been absent from castle upon Kagome's awakening due to damage control in their own lands. News of the new Western Lady had spread like wildfire and the inhabitants of these lands- demon and human alike, were spreading the rumors of rampage and murder. Kouga and Ellitari had reached their own lands in time and were able to handle the onslaught of questions and fear. Luckily for them, the inhabitants of the Southern Lands had hated Mashiru and Jutori, so forgetting them was no great feat on their parts.

"Forgive us for not coming sooner. There were matters that needed attention in our own lands." Karumos said. His eyes warmed as he gazed upon Kagome's silent form. "It is good to see that you are better now, Lady."

"Thank you, Lord Karumos." Kagome smiled gratefully and let Sesshomaru lead her into the main hall to sit by his side. Her fluffy black tail slowly wrapped around knees as she sat, her hands folded neatly in her lap.

"Shall we begin the meeting then?" Lord Toshiben offered as he looked to Sesshomaru's quiet form. The Taiyoukai nodded curtly and Kagome sighed lightly as the afternoon wore on.

*Many boring hours later*

Ebony wisps of hair brushed against the floor as Kagome wandered out onto the balcony, the setting sun kissing her alabaster skin as she moved. The meeting had drawled on for what seemed like an eternity. She knew what they would say before the thoughts had even presented themselves to the speakers. Of course news of her certain 'gifts' concerning her blood would circulate. Thankfully, the other lords had taken the time to answer the questions of their people and make an attempt to comfort them. Sesshomaru had assured her that within a month or so the heat would blow over.

"At least the ones I love don't view me as some monster." She whispered, pulling the sapphire-blue sleeping robe closer around her. Reaching out a wine-striped hand, she caught a cherry blossom on the sweet breeze in her palm.

"In the years that have passed and in the years to come, I doubt you will ever be seen as a monster, Kagome." A velvety voice danced around her as magenta-striped arms encircled her small waist and held her tight. "You're too enticing..." Sesshomaru smirked as Kagome giggled.

"Charming as always." Kagome replied as she leaned her head back into the crook of his collarbone, purring slightly as he nuzzled her hair. The purr deepened as he rubbed her stomach affectionately. "Six months, right? Considering the crossbreeding of our species?"

"From what I understand...yes." Sesshomaru answered in a thoughtful tone. He pushed aside the neck of her robe to gently kiss the silky skin of her neck and shoulder. Kagome sighed at the touch, her tail wrapping around one of his legs in instinct. Her scent danced around him as he tasted her skin. "Kagome..." Sesshomaru whispered huskily.

The sun lay into the west as the moon took its place in the dark sky. Sesshomaru's silver hair glowed in the darkness of night as he removed his mate's tail from his leg and swept her up in his arms. A feather-light laugh echoing softly in the room as he lowered her to their bed. Kagome slipped a hand to caress the back of his neck as Sesshomaru pressed his lips to hers, capturing her soul yet again. The Western Lord growled happily as her soft fingertips brushed against his skin, his own hands caressing her face and hips.

"I love you, Lord Sesshomaru." Kagome moaned softly against his ear as her eyes closed in rapture. A happy smile spreading from ear to ear as he responded to her confession.

"I love you, Lady Kagome." Sesshomaru growled lightly, kissing her earlobe. "You are my everything..." His hands working swiftly to rid her of the silk robe and his own attire all at once. Once freed, he busied himself with covering every inch of his beloved mate's body in hot kisses. Her sighs of pleasure fulfilling him in new ways he never knew existed.

*In the Western Mountains*

"Hurry up! I haven't got all night!" Jaken screeched as his tapped the staff in annoyance. The hag was beginning to try his patience.

"Quiet! What you have asked of me is not so easily accomplished, Imp!" The voice bellowed out of the darkness of the cave. "You have the staff?"

"Of course!" Jaken bit out in indignity. Chanting rose from the cave as a strange violet smoke began to pour from the darkened crevasse in the earth.

"You have asked for all those who would bring your master to be sent away! Correct?!" The witch chuckled slightly as Jaken squeaked out a "yes". "Is there anything else?"

"I don't care what you do, just get rid of them all!" The toad yelled as his patience came to an end. His eyes narrowed as the laughter continued.

"Very well..." The witch replied as the smoke thickened and rose into the night sky, stretching across rocky hills and across green fields. The Castle of the Western Lands came into view the smoke continued on, words riding the strange clouds.

*Within the castle*

Kagome sat up in the tangle of silk that encased her, her mind still dazed from Sesshomaru's acts of affection. A darkness crept into the rooms as her hand reached for her mate, shaking him awake. Sesshomaru blinked several times before growling in warning as the same feeling of dread reached him.

"Sesshomaru! Something's terribly wrong!" Kagome whispered urgently, her eyes wide with terror. She turned to eyes to his only to find them wide with shock and a horror all their own. "Sess...?"

"Kagome!" Sesshomaru reached forward to grasp Kagome to him only to find the appendage passed through her completely. The demoness's mouth opened in a silent scream as she raised a hand to her eyes only to find them fading before her.

"What's happening?!" Kagome whimpered as her mate tried futilely to gather her to him. Hot tears rose to her eyes as she in turn reached for him. "Sesshomaru!" A panic surged in the bedroom as the world began to darken, a familiar blue swimming around her. "NO!" Kagome's mind raced as the knowledge of what was happening dawned on her.

"KAGOME!" Sesshomaru roared as her figure finally faded from his sight, her scent and warmth vanishing from the room. Another dreadful thought crept into his mind as he raced from the room to the children's chambers. The beds were empty. A roar erupted from the castle that carried through the countryside; desperation, sorrow, and angry floating on the wings of the sound as it met the sleeping residents.

Sesshomaru dropped to his knees upon returning to his room. 'They're gone...but where?' A hopeless oblivion seemed to edge into his soul as he searched longingly out the balcony. 'Kagome...' Everything was gone from him; his mate, and his children. Including the unborn child in his mate's womb. Red swam before him as he brought his fists down unto the cold floor, shattering the wood and stone into dust.

"Koishii..." Sesshomaru whispered brokenly, a crimson tear sliding down his porcelain cheek.

Five-hundred years in the future Kagome awoke and turned off her alarm, shaking the weird dream of a strange, silver-haired prince from her mind as she rose and prepared for work.

'He seems so familiar...' Kagome wondered.
