Chapter 1: Train Rides and Meetings

Kagome looked out the window of the train, watching civilization give way to wilderness as she left the East Coast behind, most likely forever. She sighed, and looked over at her twin sister, Kikyo.

"Kiki? Do you...miss home?" Kikyo looked up from her book and gave her sister a sad smile. "Of course I do. I miss the Shrine, I miss Kaede-sama, I miss Otouto and Okaa-san and Grandpa..." Kagome smiled. Her sister was always honest.

"'Gome, are you nervous?" Kikyo asked with a suspicious smile. "Erm...no..." Kagome replied. She reached into her reticule and pulled out her letters and one picture, the only clues she had to the identity of her future husband-to-be, Sesshomaru Taisho.

The handwriting on the letters was neat and practical, the questions short and to the point. The only thing in the letters that she actually found interesting were the bits where He mentioned his daughter, Rin, and what she was doing. Apparently, Rin was the result of his first marriage, but she had no information about his first wife and her whereabouts (or lack thereof)

Looking at the picture once more, she was again astonished at how a person who looked so beautiful could also look like a human icicle, as cold and frigid as Lake Erie in the middle of winter. Looking at the sepia-colored photograph, she wondered what color his eyes were. They looked light, blue it seemed, but almost like stone the way the seemed to glint.

She shivered. Something about his eyes...about his icy demeanor...almost as if...

"Miss Higurashi?"

Kagome was startled out of her reverie by the voice of one of the stewards.

"Oh! Yes, sorry, what is it?"

"We've arrived at the Ohio rest stop, and will begin checking you into the hotel".

Sesshomaru looked over the herd, headed by his prize stallion, Perfection, making sure they were all there. He needed everything just so, and would not rest until he completed making them that way. It was just the way he was. He hadn't always been that way. He hadn't always been so cold and unfeeling. But... that was a long time ago. He discovered it was dangerous to care. In fact, the only thing he cared for now was the only reminder he had of happier days, Rin.

He looked over the pasture one last time, then went inside. He went to his desk, opened a drawer, and pulled out the picture and letters of his new bride-to-be. She was a lovely creature, and so full of life... She reminded him of...her. Of Sara. Why did he agree to this stupid scheme of InuYasha's! It brought back...painful memories, ones that were difficult to hide.

He knew perfectly well that Rin needed a mother, that Jaken, his manservant, was no compensation! He just HATED that it was his little of a brother that had to be the one to make him DO something about it. In fact, the only reason he agreed to this "mail-order-bride" was because InuYasha had told Rin about it, AGAINST his wishes, mind you, and the child had come to him with tears of happiness, wondering if it was true that she was going to have a mama. He just couldn't refuse when she looked at him like that. 'And she knows it, too...' he thought with a smirk. 'She knows it...'

"Whoa, Naraku, beauties, 3:00!" Naraku smirked at his partner-in-crime, Onigumo, then turned his head to the right. His jaw dropped. He was looking at two BEAUTIFUL women, Twins, it would appear. And the dresses they were wearing. They were expensive, meaning the girls were rich, and form-fitting...accentuating their curves in all the right places. Oh, how he LOVED today's fashions!

"Should I? Or will you?" Naraku asked. "Oh, be my guest!" Onigumo replied.

Naraku got up and walked towards the front desk, where the girls were checking in. 'Time to see how good an actor I am...' Naraku aimed for the more talkative of the two and just kept walking. He bumped into her, and pulled on his "surprised, sad" face. "Oh, pardon me, miss! How clumsy of me!" Kagome turned around, her lips forming a surprised "O."

"Oh, no sir! I'm all right. Please, it's nothing." Naraku stared. She really was beautiful.

"Kagome, we should get up to the room." Kagome looked at her sister questioningly, but nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry for any inconvienience, Mr...?"

"Naraku. Naraku Hanyou." He held out his hand.

"Kagome. Kagome Higurashi, soon to be Kagome Higurashi Taisho. Pleased to meet you, Mr. Hanyou. Good day." She climbed up the stairs after her sister.

After they were in their room, Kikyo turned to her sister. "'Gome, I don't trust that man. I don't want you talking to him. I hate to break it to you, but you are a terrible judge of character. I don't trust him. And, as the oldest, I forbid you to speak to him." Kagome looked at her sister. She blinked.

"Kikyo, we're a minute and a half apart."

"Still, I don't like him. I'm just looking out for your safety!" Kagome sighed.

"I know, Kikyo. All right, you win. I won't even talk to him anymore."

~~~~~
"Hey, Naraku, you know what this means, right?" Onigumo told his partner.
"Yea, I know what this means." Naraku gave an evil smirk "This means that two men will be deprived of their wives."
