Forgotten Love

Smoke filled his sensitive nose as the flames danced around him, engulfing what little remained of his palace. Dark silhouettes could be seen through the heated waves. The embers upon the ground sizzled as the sky darkened to crimson. Walls fell, stone grumbled, flesh burned and the echoes of battle flowed through the fire like newly sounded screams.

The burnt wood crunched under his feet as he walked through what was once a hallway. The sights around him made him nauseous. The smell of burning flesh contaminated his nostrils. The heat of the flames touched his skin, heating his heart with a false ray of hope. His eyes shined with an emotion that would never be felt again. His walk turned into a run when he found her scent through all the smoke.

He searched, high and low, for any trace of life. There was none. His determination peaked when he smelt her scent again, she was alive. He had to find her, even if this hellish inferno, that used to be his home, consumed him.

He ran passed what was left of the main building. As he rounded a burnt stone corner, he spotted something moving. Upon closer examination, he discovered that it was her. She was alive. Another emotion flowed through him, for the last time. He approached her.

She looked up at him through thick, black bangs. Her hazed, tear stained eyes filled with joy upon seeing his face. A small smile appeared on her bloody face. She opened her mouth to speak but she fell into his arms before a breath had left her.

He caught and cradled her in his arms. He touched her cheek in a loving manner. She looked at him as tears began to flow. She opened her mouth to speak again.

"I love you. I want you to know that."

He was confused by her words.

"I know you love me. And I love you. What's wrong?"

He bent closer to her but felt something jab his chest. He looked to see the tip of a blade emerge from the center of her rib cage, in the valley, her sternum. He looked her in the face again, his lower jaw quivering.

She reached up and cradled his face in her hand. He brought his hand up to cover hers. Tears formed in his eyes as she began to cough up blood. The crimson liquid of life flowed down the sides of her face, on to his arm and down through her long, black hair.

"Please don't leave me. You can't! You just can't die!" he said to her.

She only smiled and leaned forward for a kiss. Understanding what she was saying, he leaned toward her and gave her the last kiss she would ever receive. He put all of his love for her into that kiss. He wanted her to know how much her death would hurt him.

Her arm fell, her eyes sealed closed, her breath stopped, her heart stopped. Her body became a rag doll in his arms. He pulled from the kiss, still holding her hand to his face. He squeezed her hand, in hopes that maybe it would revive her, but it didn't. New tears formed in his eyes as he through his head back and let out an inhuman howl. He repeated the action several times till he resolved on sobbing and laying his head on her cold shoulder.

He stroked her frozen face tenderly as the sadness inside of him parted for hatred and anger. The two flowed through his veins like molten lava. The flames danced around him and his lover as he made a promise.

"Never, never again. I will never let this happen again. Oh my sweet Naomi, forgive me, I didn't mean for our love to kill you as it has. We will be together again, but in your next life. I promise, I will never let you be alone like now. I will find you when you are reborn. But for now, I will never love again until I find you. I will never let anyone into my frozen heart. I will never feel until you are in my arms again. I promise. As your friend, mate, lover and husband. I, SesshoMaru, will never let this happen again. Never."
