Chapter 1 – Necklaces and Swords

(Western Lands, 550 years from the future, 50 back in the past)

A 16 year old Kagome trudged happily through the main hallway of the Southern Castle, looking for her betrothed. Kagome was a full-blooded silver inu-youkai, daughter of the taiyoukai Higurashi, heir to the Southern lands. She was certainly fit to be a princess – long, silky raven hair with blue streaks in them, an extremely curvaceous body, a heart purer than any angel, huge sapphire eyes, a cute button nose, pouty lips, and long legs that men would love to have wrapped around their body. It was a wonder that no one proposed to her earlier...but maybe it was a certain jealous inu-youkai's fault? Kagome walked into the dining hall, eyes brightening up as she saw Sesshoumaru talking to her father. Sesshoumaru's head turned slightly, eyes softening as Kagome walked towards them. Kagome's dad smiled sadly, but understandingly as he turned and walked out to give the 2 some privacy. Kagome hugged Sesshoumaru tightly.

"Sesshou? How's the war between us and the east going?" Kagome mumbled into her lover's chest. Sesshoumaru was also another silver inu-youkai. The two made a rare couple – Sesshoumaru's almost feminine aristocratic (and perfect) features complemented Kagome's features. Sesshoumaru had molten golden eyes, full manly lips, and a perfect nose, with a crescent moon and markings on his face. Even the kimono couldn't hide his perfect physique, and passing women couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to spend a night with him.

"Kagome..." Sesshoumaru didn't know how to break the news to her. "We are not losing the war..." 'but we are not winning either.' he said in his head. Kagome looked up.

"What are you hiding from me?" she said suspiciously. Sesshoumaru sighed. How could she read him so easily, when others thought him to be cold and uncaring?

"We are not winning either. I have sent troupes to the eastern castle, but I fear that as we are talking, troupes are making their way to our castle also. Kagome..." Sesshoumaru said worriedly. "I love you." He bent down for a kiss, and Kagome responded wholeheartedly. She broke off, looking at him expectedly. She knew he was about to tell her something important.

"I will have to send you away. It is not safe here. Your father and I will stay here and fight." Sesshoumaru looked away, not standing to look in her eyes. If he did, he wouldn't have the resolve to let go of her.

"B..but...it's not like I'm weak! I can help you fight too! You don't have to send me away! I ref –...wait...when you guys when, I going to come back, right?" Kagome asked hopefully. Sesshoumaru couldn't bear to look at her. Kagome's eyes filled with tears. "Do you...not want to see me anymore?" That got Sesshoumaru to look at Kagome. His heart broke – her eyes were so sad...

"Of course I want to see you again! Kagome...you are a miko-youkai. The eastern lord is sending dark mikos to you. Do you understand, Kagome? Now, you might be able to defeat one, but will you be able to defeat a whole army of them? If you stay here, you will die!" Sesshoumaru said forcefully. "Even when the war is over – there will be assassins everywhere looking for revenge. I can not abandon my lands. It is not a choice – my father is dead."

Kagome gasped, and shook her head forcefully. "I want to stay!" Sesshoumaru did not reply. He reached inside his kimono, and pulled out a beautiful sparkling necklace.

"This was my mothers..." Sesshoumaru said as he put the necklace on her. Before she could reply, Sesshoumaru hit her pressure point. Falling limply into his arms, he picked Kagome up and quickly sped towards Inu-yasha's forest. He might not like his brother that much, but he could trust that his brother, and his miko would take care of this forest. Seconds turned to minutes, and Sesshoumaru finally landed in a familiar clearing. Sesshoumaru had already discussed this topic with Inu-yasha and Kikyou. It had taken a lot of explaining, but Inu-yasha finally agreed. Kikyou stood waiting next to the Bone-Eater's well.

"There is not much time. Hurry." Sesshoumaru said urgently. Kikyou nodded, and started glowing a bright pink. Kagome lifted out of his hands, and was encased in a sphere of pink light. Suddenly, the sphere flung itself into the well, and disappeared. Kikyou stopped glowing, and slowly walked back towards the village. Sesshoumaru stared at the well. He had lost his love – one of the only people that had really cared for him. All because of a stupid war. But, he could not help but hope that his Kagome would return to him. Sesshoumaru shook himself. Now was not the time for grieving. He had his lands to save. Turning around, he started to speed back to the castle. No one ever noticed the tear drop falling towards the dew-laden grass.

(52 years later, in the past)

"Inu-yasha! The shards are all in it's forehead!" Kagome yelled as Inu-yasha jumped towards the oni.

"KAZE NO KIZU!!" he yelled as he swung the almighty Tetsusaiga at the monster. Kagome ran towards the remains of the bat demon and picked up the 3 shards, now glowing purified in her jar. Kagome had changed a lot in 2 years – the innocent school girl no longer existed – now, there stood a fully grown woman. Kagome had long midnight blue hair that reached her waist. Her body had lost the baby fat that she had once had, and it left a perfect hourglass body that her kimono could not hide. Even if a certain hanyou had decided to remind her every single day that she was Kikyou's inferior, Kagome's heart still remained purer than Midoriko's. She had long ago opted to switch from school uniforms to kimonos.

"Inu-yasha!!" a little kitsune's voice whined. "Can we take a break? I'm tired, and we just got 3 whole shards!!" Kagome smiled, shook her head, and went and picked Shippou up. The kitsune snuggled happily into Kagome, and Inu-yasha said, "Feh.", plopping down on the ground. Kagome set Shippou gently on a tree stump, and got out a Mars bar for him to nibble on. Sango changed back into her kimono, but not before giving Miroku a huge wack on the head for trying to peek. Kagome rummaged around her bag, looking for the ramen containers. Suddenly, Inu-yasha perked up.

"I'm going to go scout around for demons." he said quickly as he jumped in one direction. Kagome frowned. What could make him deny ramen? 'Of course.' she thought bitterly. 'Kikyou.' Kagome's body hadn't been the only thing that had grown. Her powers had grown far past Kikyou's. A year ago, Kaede had decided to start teaching Kagome the basic miko stuff, but Kagome had amazed her teacher by starting to perform extremely complex spells, and techniques. For some strange reason, Kagome did not want Inu-yasha to know about her abilities...but she had a feeling that if Inu-yasha knew, Kikyou would know, and somehow, Naraku would find out. Well, what exactly can Kagome do? You'll find out.

Kagome had long ago gotten over Inu-yasha. She had realized after a few months of heartbreak that Inu-yasha just wasn't the man for her. He would never see her for Kagome, and her name in his book would always be "Kikyou's replacement". She would never be better than her in his eyes, and it saddened her to know that Inu-yasha wouldn't even call her a friend. After the group had their dinner, Kagome snuggled into her sleeping bag, drifting asleep.

(Next Day, in the Morning)

Kagome shot up, awake, and panting slightly. Shippou stirred across her stomach, and mumbled sleepily, "What's wrong, mama?"

"Nothing, Ship-chan...go back to sleep, ok? I'm going to go home and restock on some supplies. Can you please tell Sango-chan and Miroku-chan?" Kagome asked. Shippou mumbled another sleepy "Hai..." and snuggled into the sleeping bag, seeking warmth. Kagome kissed his forehead, and started gathering her things. Packing everything into her ugly yellow backpack, she started trudging down the trail towards the well. Inu-yasha was still nowhere to be found. 'Probably off fucking that tramp...' Kagome thought. 'Woa! When did I start swearing?'

'Since now.'

'You again?'

'Yup. So what do you think of your dream?'

'Well...there is no way in hell that I could have been engaged to Sesshoumaru.'

'Yes there is.'

'No way!'

'Yes.'

'No.'

'Yes.'

'No.'

'No.'

'Yes.'

'Ha, got you!' the voice said. Kagome pouted mentally.

'That wasn't fair! And I still say no.'

'Whatever you say...' the voice said as it disappeared. Kagome blinked, and realized that she had already reached the well. Jumping in, she let the comforting lights surround her. Landing on the hard dirt, she started climbing up the ladder that her okaa-san had installed for her. Kagome walked up towards the door, and yelled, "I'm home!" Mrs. Higurashi was cooking breakfast in the kitchen.

"Would you like some pancakes, Kagome?" she asked.

"Yes, please! I'm going to take a bath and change first, ok? I can't stay for long. I only came back for some supplies, and if I don't go back soon Inu-yasha is going to throw a fit." she informed, while thinking 'If he's back...' as she walked upstairs. After filling up the bathtub, she stripped down and sunk in the lukewarm water. After getting up and drying off, she quickly went back downstairs. Kagome's mother had already gotten out a new box of ramen, more supplies, and whatnot.

"Arigatou, 'kaa!" Kagome said as she hugged her mother lightly.

"Kagome?" she said hesitantly. "Sit down, please." Kagome blinked and sat down obediently.

"Are you coming back for your birthday, Kagome?" her mother asked curiously.

"I would like to, but I don't think I would have a chance...we still have a ton of shards to collect..." Kagome said sadly. "Gomen..."

"Nonsense. You shouldn't be sorry, it is your birthday after all. Since you won't be coming back for your birthday, I guess I should give you an early birthday present. Wait here." Mrs. Higurashi said as she walked upstairs to get whatever gift it was. Kagome couldn't help but wonder what it was...Mrs. Higurashi came back down holding a 2 decorated wooden boxes.

Mrs. Higurashi flipped open the bigger box, and Kagome gasped. "Dear, this sword has been in this shrine for a while now. It rightfully belongs to you, and I would feel better if you had a sword with you in the feudal era." Kagome squealed and hugged her mom. How did she know that she had been secretly wanting a sword? After Kagome let go, Mrs. Higurashi opened the smaller box slowly. Kagome's eyes widened. It was a beautiful white gold necklace, with a huge sapphire crescent moon pendant. In the center of the crescent, there was a diamond white sun.

"Momma...I can't take this. You should –" Kagome was cut off. "Kagome, this necklace is rightfully yours. It was a...gift to you from someone you used to know." Kagome blinked shockingly as her mother put the necklace on her. Kagome strapped the sword to her obi. Maybe she could get Sango to teach her how to use it...

"Arigatou, okaa-san!!" Kagome hugged her mother one time as she walked towards the well. Kagome jumped down the well. An inu-youkai watched from the window. "Be careful, my daughter..."

---

Kagome hummed happily as she walked back towards Kaede's village, as she could sense the group's auras resonating from that area.

"Momma!!" Shippou squealed as he launched himself at Kagome's waist. Kagome squeezed Shippou tightly.

"Where were you, wench?" Inu-yasha said as he walked up towards them. Kagome's eyes narrowed dangerously.

"Why do you keep insisting on calling me WENCH?! Sit! I was restocking on my supplies, thank you very much!" Kagome fumed as she stepped on the hanyou's head. Shippou giggled, and Inu-yasha kept muttering curses into the dirt. Kagome stiffened.

"Inu-yasha? Jewel shards coming this way. Fast. And it's not Kouga." Kagome told the hanyou worriedly. Inu-yasha jumped up, sword ready. "Shippou? Please tell Sango and Miroku to come." Kagome asked as she readied her bow. Shippou took off quickly towards the village. A huge worm toppled in front of them, it's head cut off. Kagome quickly went forward, retrieving the shards before the worm could regenerate. Inu-yasha sniffed, and growled.

"Sesshoumaru...what the fuck are you doing here?" Inu-yasha yelled. Kagome's heart fluttered, thinking back to the dream. Inu-yasha charged towards his half-brother. Sesshoumaru backhanded Inu-yasha, and sent him crashing hard into a tree.

"I am merely protecting my lands, half-breed." Sesshoumaru said as he turned around and started walking. Inu-yasha growled and charged at him.

"SIT!" Kagome yelled as Inu-yasha slammed into the ground. Sesshoumaru turned again, and looked at Kagome.

"He wasn't doing anything to you, Inu-yasha. He only hit you because you tried to hurt him first. And since this forest is in the Western Lands, it would make sense that he would want to kill the worm. Gomen nasai, Sesshoumaru-sama." Kagome apologized, and bowed. Sesshoumaru nodded his head, a bit surprised at her respect and intellect. His gaze narrowed as he saw the pendant laying on her neck. There was a sword attached to her waist. 'No...possible...way...'

"Wench. Where did you get the necklace and sword?" Sesshoumaru demanded.

"My name isn't MIKO! It's KAGOME, got it? Not wench, not bitch, not whore, but KAGOME. K-A-G-O-M-E! Use my name properly!!" Kagome fumed. Inu-yasha smirked into the floor – he had gotten this lecture a million times in his life. Truth be told, he liked getting Kagome mad. She had a glint in her eye, and her scent became spicy.

"I was not aware that your name was Kagome." Sesshoumaru said, amused, but not showing it. Kagome flushed.

"Gomen...Inu-yasha-baka here has no clue how to pronounce my name, so I kinda overreacted..." she said.

"I accept your apology. Now, where did you get your necklace and sword?" he said, starting to get impatient.

"It was a gift from my mom..." Kagome looked at him confusedly. Sesshoumaru sniffed – she was not lying. Turning around, he left quickly, having all the information he needed.

"What was all that about...?" Kagome muttered as she helped the now sulky Inu-yasha up.
