Why? by Shadow

Chapter One

Why? Why did everything that seemed so right go so wrong? Why did Inuyasha go with Kikyo? When did Miroku decide that he was sick of being a good guy and join Naraku in exchange for his cure? And why did I, the raven haired girl from another time, have to go home with such an empty heart? When did Sango and Shippou decide to leave and open a ramen restaurant? Everything seemed like it was going so good. We had half of the Shikon no Tama and were ready to go face off with Naraku for the other half. Then Inuyasha decided to go with Kikyo and search instead of me and everything just caved in on me. I stared out my bedroom window and into the darkness of the moonless night. A sob racked my body and I buried my face into my crossed arms. My grandfather had sealed the well and I hadn't gone into it for over a year now. I was about to turn 16, and all I could do was sob to myself about how bad my life was. I turned and looked up at the clock, in ten minutes I would 16, but I wasn't sure that I wanted to be here when that time came. I stood up and walked over to the door of my room, I silently slid it open and listened for any sounds of life. Nothing. I stepped into the hall and quietly made my way downstairs. I slipped my shoes on and examined my attire; I was wearing a tank top and a pair of black pajama pants. I would only be back in time for a few minutes, just to look at the clear sky and breath the fresh air. I nodded to myself and slipped out the door into the darkness.

I spotted the well house and walked up to the closed door, there was a scroll on it, it was supposed to keep anything from coming from the past. I ripped the piece of paper from the door and opened it to pear into the darkness. The well was untouched. It looked exactly as it had when I came home in tears that last time, telling my grandfather to seal the well so no one could get out. I walked down the stairs towards the well, remembering all those times that I had come running through here with Inuyasha to go get a shard. I stopped just in front of the well and looked down into the inky darkness.

" Here goes," I whispered to myself as I jumped over the edge. It was just as I remembered it, floating through time. I felt the ground reappear under my feet and began to climb up the well wall. I reached the top and peered into the darkness. There wasn't a person in sight. I hoisted myself onto the ground and peered down at my watch. I had another five minutes before I turned 16; I took that time to look up at the sky and breath in deeply the fresh air. But just as my watch beeped at the approaching hour, I heard footsteps and felt the presence of a very powerful Youkai. I looked up to see two golden orbs peering back. I took a deep breath and smiled.

" Hello, Sesshoumaru-sama," I said to the InuYoukai as he continued to stare at me.

" I haven't seen you for quite some time," he said, taking one step closer and sniffing the air, " You were my brothers wench, were you not?"

" My name is Kagome," I said, my voice still even and almost happy, " And I was no ones wench."

" What are you doing here anyway? I thought you left to return to your own land," Sesshoumaru said, closing the distance between us in two graceful steps.

" I turned 16 about two minutes ago, I came here to see the place one last time," I said in a pained voice.

" One last time? What do you mean?" Sesshoumaru asked as he sat down in front of me.

" I mean that I plan on going home and never coming back," A tear managed to drip out of my eye and slide down my cheeks, " I love this place more than anything, but I can't move forward unless I forget this place."

Sesshoumaru nodded understandingly and stood up, he held out a clawed hand for me and I took it, then he said to me in a low voice, " I would very mush so like to see this land that you come from, would you take me there?"

" I don't know, it might be a bit overwhelming," I said, my face only inches from his, " The future is very different from this time."

" The future??" Sesshoumaru asked, unconsciously leaning his face closer to mine, " This I must see. How do we get to the future?"

" Through the well," I said in a low sad voice, " I'll show you,"

I took his hand and led him to the side of the well, " Just jump into the well," I said as I jumped, not letting go of his hand. We fell through time together, the odd colors rushing past as we made our way towards the future. When we landed Sesshoumaru wrapped an arm around my waist and jumped out of the well, we landed at the foot of the stairs that led to the grounds of the shrine. He looked at me questioningly and I led him out into my world. He gasped when he saw the lights of Tokyo and heard the cars zooming by on the road below. He growled at an airplane that flew overhead and caused me to double over laughing. A smile came across his face then and he watched me laugh until my sides were sore.

" Kagome," he said to me, " Where do you live in this new world?"

" I live in that house right there," I said pointing towards my home, " My family have been living in it for about four hundred years."

Sesshoumaru nodded and sniffed the air, " I smell an old man, and young boy, and woman." He said turning to me.

" My grandfather, my brother, and my mother," I told him, it wasn't until after I had shown him around my house that I realized what was happening. Sesshoumaru is in my house. Oh my god! Why isn't he trying to kill me? Yikes! What if he kills my family?!? Kagome looked over at the demon lord and found him watching her. He had smelled the sudden fear rise up in her and wondered why it was now that it had not come instead of earlier.

" Why are you afraid?" he asked.

" I just realized that it was you who I was showing around my house," I said slowly, " You, the demon who has tried to kill me numerous times."

" I never wanted you dead," he said in an amused voice, " I wanted my brother dead, I was always fascinated by you."

I found myself smiling to him and reached out with one hand to lightly stroke his tail. He began to purr as I did this and his eyes began to droop. I found this cute and had soon led him over to my bed and laid him down. I told him to sleep here and got up to leave when I felt his hand close around my wrist.

" Where are you going?" he asked me, worry in his big gold eyes.

" I was going to sleep downstairs," I said to him.

" If anyone should sleep downstairs it should be me," he said, " This is your house, and this is your room, I should sleep elsewhere," and before I could object I found myself on my bed, Sesshoumaru tucking me in lightly with a frown on his face, " I would never take a ladies room, never."

" You could share the bed with me," I said to him, holding onto his wrist the same way he had held onto mine, " There's room."

He blushed and looked down at me with sparkling eyes, and then he nodded and lay down next to me, his tail curling around us both. I began to stroke it absently and fell asleep to the sound of his purring.

Inuyasha was walking past the well when he suddenly stopped and sniffed the air around it. He could smell that Kagome had been here recently, and that his brother had too. Sesshoumaru had walked with Kagome over to the well and then their scents disappeared. Inuyasha was filled with worry and found himself jumping into the well without a second thought. He came out on the other end and quickly picked up the scent of his retched brother again. They were close, probably inside her house. Inuyasha ran to the house and was inside and up the stairs in the blink of an eye. He opened the door to Kagome's room and nearly passed out at the sight. Sesshoumaru was curled up around Kagome, purring as she stroked his tail. Inuyasha growled deep in his throat and took a step forward. Kagome had woken up when she heard the growl and turned to Inuyasha with a smile on her face.

" What are you doing w-with him?!?" he asked as Sesshoumaru opened one eye lazily to see who the intruder was.

" What does it look like?" she asked him haughtily, " I'm tryin' to get some shut-eye!"

" With my brother??" Inuyasha asked, almost unable to believe his eyes.

" It would appear that way wouldn't it?" Sesshoumaru stated as he climbed to his feet, " Can't you see for yourself?"

" What did you do to her?" Inuyasha demanded, unsheathing the Tetsuiga and pointing it at him.

" I did nothing half breed," Sesshoumaru said as he stood up, " At least nothing she want me to do."

Inuyasha paled and looked over at Kagome, and then he turned around and hastily left.

" That was rude Sesshou-chan," Kagome said with her hands on her hips.

" I know," Sesshoumaru said with a smirk, " Why don't we go back to sleep?"

" You're sleepin' on the couch bub," Kagome said as she threw a pillow at him.

He frowned but turned around and left, and soon the sound of snoring could be heard through the house.
