Another of Gold and White by MushaiyaRyu

One Shot

Why was letting him go so easy, yet so terribly difficult? I can't take it because I don't understand. Perhaps life is not worth living because of this great folly. Inuyasha's gone, and that's all that matters. He's chosen Kikyo over me, and that's all that matters.

Or is it? Another being of white and gold entered my heart. He took it by storm, forcing Inuyasha away from me. Why wasn't he here with me, comforting me like a loved one should?

"Because he does not know. He does not know that I love him," I murmured into the rain. The well, now incapable of transporting me through time, filled with water, its gentle plip plop plip soothing my rattled nerves. I stared listlessly into the water, my tears adding to the watery depths.

"I love him," I whispered to the wind.

"You love who?" a dark voice purred. I looked up, my blue eyes wide yet hopeful.

When you walk away

You don't hear me say please

Oh baby, don't go

Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight

There he stood. His white attire was like a beacon of light in the gloom that clouded my vision. His silver hair clung to his body, and his bangs parted delicately to frame a blue crescent moon. Twin magenta stripes were deftly painted upon his cheekbones. Sunrise eyes stared down at me, curiosity playing in their depths.

"Were this lowly one to tell ye, my gracious lord, thee wouldst ne'er understand," I replied softly, speaking in the formal tone that he and I had devised as a greeting. I could almost hear his small smile when I lowered my head again. That small smile disappeared almost immediately. I assumed that he had scented my tears.

"A beautiful maiden should not weep during so wonderful a time. Thee shall dance with this Sesshoumaru in happiness like before," he murmured softly, taking quiet steps toward me. It was too much. I burst into tears. I felt his progress come to an abrupt halt.

You're giving me too many things

Lately you're all I need

You smiled at me and said,

"Please don't, Lord Sesshoumaru-sama! It's too much for me!" I sobbed, clutching my head in my hands. I felt his remorse, his concern. No sound was heard except for the quiet patter of the rain. The rain...

"Do you remember?" I said past my tears, sniffling from the cold. I heard his movement in front of me. "Do you remember when we first met when no battle was being raged? It was on a night just like this."

"I would prefer not to be reminded of how often you have cried," he replied gently, and he sat beside me. I leaned against him, seeking his warmth. He obliged by wrapping his arm around me and pulling me closer.

"It was much like this night," I started.

Don't get me wrong I love you

But does that mean I have to meet your father?

When we are older you'll understand

What I meant when I said "No,

I don't think life is quite that simple"

~*Flashback*~

"Why are you crying, Miko?" he asked, his voice so full of true curiosity. I looked up from my knees to stare at his imposing figure that was so regal and strong. Shaking my head, I looked up into the branches of the Goshinboku.

"It is nothing for such a supreme being such as you to trifle over," I replied sadly, brushing away my tears and standing up. Sesshoumaru arched a perfect brow and strolled towards me. I pressed myself against the trunk of the Goshinboku, wishing that I were gone. Sesshoumaru stopped a foot before me. Rain poured down from the heavens as we stared at each other.

"So, you have gained a respect for this Sesshoumaru?" he asked suddenly, his golden eyes flickering with untold emotions as my tears mingled with the rain. I shook my head.

"No, Sesshoumaru-sama. I have always held a respect for you. I couldn't, however, show it in front of... in front of..." I tried to stop the tears, but they kept coming. Sesshoumaru visibly looked irked by my behavior. I wiped the tears away with the back of my hand, cracking a small smile.

"I'm sorry Sesshoumaru-sama. Things aren't working out for me right now. Is there something you needed?" I asked shakily. Sesshoumaru did nothing for a moment, only watched my tears course down my cheeks. Then, as if in a trance, he reached forward and allowed a tear to drip onto his index finger. I stared at the drop, and before I realized it, Sesshoumaru licked away both tear tracks. I was about to speak when he pressed a finger to my lips.

"One such as yourself should not cry tears for that half-breed." Sesshoumaru turned and walked away. I watched him pause at the forest line in a sort of stunned silence. He turned on his heel and faced me.

"I shall be watching over you...Kagome," he stated and was gone.

"Do you remember, Kagome, what I had said?" Sesshoumaru inquired tenderly, running a clawed hand through my wet hair. I nodded silently, feeling no need for words.

"I do mean them, Kagome. I shall watch over you always."

"What am I, though?" I asked, gazing up into his amber eyes. Confusion clouded the great sunset orbs. I sat up properly and fixed him with a hopefully unrelenting gaze. I suppose it must have worked because he did not look away.

"Am I a little sister? A friend? An ally? Tell me, please!" I begged, my eyes wet with fresh tears. Sesshoumaru remained silent then looked away, his eyes almost flushing with sorrow. I froze.

"Or am I just a bargaining chip?"

"Never." His reply was instantaneous and filled with such sincerity that I almost gasped. He looked at me again, and I did gasp at the sheer amount of emotion swimming in those golden eyes.

"You will never be so mediocre a thing, Kagome. You are too special for anyone on this earth. No one here deserves your love. I--" He cut off and stood up. I followed suit and clutched onto his haori.

"Yes, you!" I cried, tightening my grip. "You! Exactly!" Sesshoumaru looked at me, his eyes cold.

"Yes, I. What about me?" he snapped. I was so shocked that I stumbled away and proceeded to fall into the well. I closed my eyes and waited for the end. However, I was surprised to open my eyes and look into Sesshoumaru's golden ones.

The daily things

that keep us all busy

all confusing me that's when u came to me and said,

I saw guilt in those eyes, as well as a brewing emotion I could not identify. He pulled me towards him, and I closed my eyes. His lips met mine, and I gasped mentally. No matter how chaste the kiss, I could sense the intensity and passion behind it. Sesshoumaru pulled away. I put my fingers to my lips.

"Why?" I asked softly, as if afraid to damage the moment. He gazed at me with those tawny eyes, and I lowered my hand as he reached toward me. Sesshoumaru traced my lips delicately with a claw then cupped my cheek. I leaned into the touch.

Wish I could prove I love you

but does that mean I have to walk on water?

When we are older you'll understand

It's enough when I say so,

And maybe some things are that simple

"A memory," he finally said. A deep sadness tainted his rich voice. "For only a memory." He turned and began to walk away.

"Please, no. Don't go, Sesshoumaru!" I cried. His pace slowed, but he did not stop. I began to cry again.

"You can't leave! You just can't!" I could feel his agony, his pain, as he took those steps. The steps that carried him away from me. That's when I decided: no matter whether Inuyasha still cares, I will always love Sesshoumaru.

"Aishiteru, Sesshoumaru!" I sobbed out just as he disappeared into the trees. I fell from the well and collapsed, curling into the fetal position. I sobbed and sobbed; yet he did not return.

"Aishiteru... aishiteru..." I murmured, hoping desperately that the words alone would bring him back to me. His presence was all around me. He was still here, listening to everything. I felt that, despite the emotional wreck that I was at the moment, he deserved an explanation.

"I'm not sure when I started loving you, Sesshoumaru," I yelled into the forest in earnest. His aura flooded over with joy, as if me saying the word "love" solidified the feeling that poured from me.

"But I do know for certain that I will love you until the end of my life!" I could sense his hesitation, his doubt. I sighed ruefully.

"Inuyasha is just a friend. Nothing more. He has broken me too many times for me love him anymore. You're the only one for me, Sesshou-chan. You're the only one..." I trailed off, succumbing to the great onslaught of tears.

"I, Sesshoumaru, do not know when I started caring, Kagome," Sesshoumaru replied as he walked from the trees once again. I did not look up. I lay there in the mud, listening to his words as though they were words from Kami himself.

"I suppose that, even though we are of different kin, love can blossom between two peoples. When you ask what you are to me, I cannot answer. I know not the words, Kagome. Tell me the words." His voice was so pleading, so anxious. I opened my eyes to see him kneeling beside me. I had no strength to lift myself from the mud.

"Hold me, and tell me that you love me," I finally said, a slow smile creeping over my face.

I felt his arms wrap around me and pull my tired body towards him. I leaned against his chest as his fingers wrapped around my own. Sesshoumaru brought my hand to his lips and elegantly kissed each fingertip.

"Aishiteru, my Kagome," he said lovingly, placing a kiss on my forehead. "I shall watch over you always. You shall be mine, as I will be yours. If you accept this, we are mates for life and all eternity." I looked up at him with bright, loving eyes.

"I accept with all my heart and soul that I shall take you as my own, and I shall be yours forever and eternity." At the end of my words, Sesshoumaru's lips found mine, and we kissed passionately, clutched in each other's arms.
