A Youkai's Memories

Chapter 1: Nightmares in plenty

'He saw a flash of light flickering off of metal...a sword. Why did he have a sword? Suddenly, something rushed at him, making him flinch and instinctively want to turn away. Instead, he felt himself draw the long metal sword at his side and fluently slashed the insolent beast, effectively cutting off its head. His hand automatically cleaned the blade quickly, and slid it back into the sheath at his side. The sword was powerful, and immensely evil. How he knew that, he wasn't quite sure. Abruptly the scene changed, and he found himself watching a small group of people. One in particular intrigued him...the young woman in a school girl uniform. Her back was turned to him at the moment, and he yearned to see her face. As if she heard him, she turned slowly around, but before he was able to see her completely, everything went black.'

Sesshomaru sat up, panting. He had been having similar dreams ever since his 17th birthday. He couldn't explain them, and he could never see the girl's face. This frustrated him to no end. He shook his head as if to get the dream out of his head, and looked to his side at his clock. He groaned, seeing that he had quite some time before he was supposed to be at school.

He decided to catch up on his reading, and so he picked up Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables". It was one of his favorites, and he always read it to calm himself down. The time flew by quickly, and soon it was time to leave. He stopped by the kitchen and said goodbye to his parents, as he had been doing ever since he started going to school. He walked out to where Jaken was waiting, and strode past him to the car, getting in while ignoring Jaken. Jaken finally slid into the driver's seat, and started off towards the school.

Sesshomaru was lost in thought as the rather short drive took place. He just couldn't get out of his head that girl from his dream. The feelings that came along with her presence were almost overwhelming. He shook his head mentally; he shouldn't care about some dream. Sensing the car come to a stop, he grabbed his bag, and got out of the car.

He stopped, looking up at the steps to the school. He took a breath and strode into the school, flaring his usual confident aura. That alone normally kept people away from him.

'It's not that I'm unsociable; it's just that the people in this school irritate me.'

Sesshomaru walked into his first class, making his way to the back of the room. He took his usual seat near the window in the corner, and waited for class to start. As the other students stumbled in, he stared out the window, lost in thought. The teacher's voice shook him back to reality.

"Class, we have a new student with us. Her name is Higurashi Kagome and she is going to be joining us for the rest of the year. Please make her feel welcome."

Sesshomaru looked at the girl next to the teacher and couldn't help but stare. She was attractive, with startling blue-gray eyes, and wavy black hair, but she seemed so familiar to him somehow.

'My dream....she reminds me of my dream. Why?'

The teacher directed her towards the back of the class, next to Sesshomaru in the only empty seat. She sat down, and turned to him, a polite smile on her face.

"Hi, I'm Higurashi Kagome. Might I know your name?" Sesshomaru pondered whether or not to answer her. He looked at her innocent expression, and decided to comply if only to satiate his curiosity.

"Taisho Sesshomaru." He shook her hand and smirked. He would find out what was going on...he'd make sure of it. She gave him an uncertain look, but yet, not afraid...just...confused about something.

The rest of the day went on, and Sesshomaru discovered found the mysterious blue eyed girl in some more of her classes. What really surprised him though, is that at the end of the day, she came up to him, and said good-bye. He just looked at her in shock, not answering her at all, as she smiled and walked out of the school. No one dared to speak to him, much less say good bye. Most were too intimidated. The only ones that did were only trying to get him to go out with them. He growled suddenly, seeing the said offenders walking towards his waiting ride. He decided to walk home, and left without even telling Jaken.

Sesshomaru noticed that it happened to be in the same direction that Kagome went. He hurried a bit, wanting to see where she lived. He got quite a shock when he turned the corner, and saw that down an ally was Kagome, surrounded by a group of thugs.

"Hey, Naraku sent us to get you. He's pissed that you took off like that. I suggest you come quietly, and we'll put in a good word for you. He might go easier on you. Don't know why you'd refuse him anyway. He's the best choice you would ever get..."

"I'm not his, and am not going back there. Why the hell doesn't he get that!!?? You can forget about me going nicely. Or going at all." Kagome was getting mad, something Sesshomaru didn't expect. Fright maybe, panic, but not anger.

"Stupid girl. If Naraku wants something, he gets it. It's as simple as that. Now come on before you get hurt. Naraku wouldn't be too happy seeing you hurt...much." With that, he lunged at Kagome, who dodged. She whipped around, her foot catching him in the stomach, sending him tumbling. She got into a defensive stance, waiting for the next opponent. As they came at her, she became a scary woman, sending the men reeling. Sesshomaru watched in awe of her surprising fighting ability.

One of the men snuck up behind her as she was busy with another. Sesshomaru decided to intervene, and stopped the man before he could lay a single filthy hand on her. She whirled around, facing him. She looked at him in shock, before giving him a smile that was confused and gratified at the same time. The brutes glared at Sesshomaru and left, not wanting to get in over their heads.

Kagome started walking again, and he followed her, the silence being slightly tense. Unexpectedly, a small cat jumped out bushes, growling ferociously at Sesshomaru.

"Kirara! What are you doing out here?" A small cat jumped into her arms, mewing. Sesshomaru looked at the cat in distaste, never really having liked cats. He didn't pay much attention to it at first until something processed in his brain. He swung his head around again, and stared at the cat, who had yet to stop growling.

"Kirara, calm down. He's a friend. Sorry Taisho-san, this is my faithful friend Kirara. She has helped me through a lot." He looked at her in disbelief, how could a kitten help her through anything? He figured she probably meant the emotional reassurance or whatever that crap was that pets were supposedly good for.

"We need to talk. There is something going on here with you, and I intend to find out. Including the reason why that cat has two tails." Sesshomaru looked her in the eye, making sure that she wouldn't escape from this.

"I can't talk here. How about we go somewhere else that would be more comfortable and safe?" He nodded, and then pulled her along down a different street. They were headed to his house; a place he knew was safe. Kirara went into Kagome's hair, and hid from whatever wandering eyes there may be.

"Let's go to my house. We can talk there." She looked at him, and walked a little faster. They came up to the drive, and Sesshomaru voiced a command to let them enter. The gate swung open, and Kagome's eyes widened at the site before her. His house was beautiful, with gardens everywhere, and gorgeous cobblestone driveways and sidewalks. There was a wonderful wooded lot behind the house for as much as she could see from there. Sesshomaru smirked, and lead her to the main doors.

He was about to lead her to his study, when they heard a voice call out.

"Sesshomaru, is that you? Can you wait for a minute, please?" Sesshomaru halted, keeping Kagome with him. His parents walked into the entry way, and looked at him nervously. He narrowed his eyes, getting the feeling that something was wasn't right. Their eyes shifted to the girl beside him, and gave her a polite smile. A boy entered behind them, who didn't appear to be that much younger then Sesshomaru by all appearances, and had the same characteristics of the Taisho family. Silver hair, gold eyes...Sesshomaru looked at his parents in now avid curiosity.

Sesshomaru's father shifted uncomfortably, and looked towards his wife, sadness apparent in his eyes. He tried to stall for a bit, and nodded towards Kagome.

.

"Sesshomaru, who is your friend?" He asked. Kagome opened her mouth to answer him when Sesshomaru cut her off.

"She is a girl from school. What is going on and who is this?" Taisho Kado sighed, and looked Sesshomaru in the eyes.

"His name is Inuyasha. He is your half brother. His mother died, leaving him to my care. Your mother has graciously decided to let him stay here." Sesshomaru looked at him in shock, disbelief clear on his face at his father's actions. Kagome looked at everyone awkwardly, not sure if she should leave or not. It seemed like Sesshomaru had enough on his proverbial silver platter to cause it to come crashing down.

"That would mean that you..." Taisho Kado nodded, trying not to look at his wife's disappointed and hurt look. He knew she had forgiven him, and still loved him, but he felt horrible about the whole thing just the same. It wasn't as if the affair was just caused by wandering eyes or foolish notions of love, he truly loved Inuyasha's mother, but it wasn't to be as he couldn't leave his wife, whom he loved equally as much. So, he decided that he could have both, until he realized what he was doing to the women. At least in his eyes, that's how it worked. He wasn't even aware that his other lover was with child, until Inuyasha came to him from the state, as he was still too young to live by himself.

Sesshomaru was shocked, but masked his face once again, and looked towards the extremely uncomfortable Kagome. He decided to continue with what he was doing to get his mind off this latest soap opera version of his life. He grabbed a hold of Kagome's arm, and started pulling her towards the stairs.

"We had come here for a reason, and will be in my study. No one is to come near there, or I will be extremely upset." Kagome looked back at his family, and said a quick good bye, looking at each of them. For some reason, her gaze kept going to Inuyasha; it was as if he was familiar somehow. There was something else strange about him too, along with the rest of the family, but for right now, she had to deal with Sesshomaru. She'd figure the rest out later.

Sanguinea:: here are some things to help you understand the story better if you haven't already read this.

~Sesshomaru doesn't know anything about demons

~Yes, the woman really is Sesshomaru's mother; she didn't die in this fic. Neither did his father.

~I'm sorry; I just had to bring Inuyasha into the story. I couldn't resist! ^_^

~The rest of the cast will enter in eventually; it might be a while however ^^;

~This is sort of AU...but also canon...in a sense...it will become clearer later in the story.

I'll put any other confusing parts in later as needed...if you don't understand something, just put it in a review and I'll try to answer you the best I can without giving away the story ^^
