“My baby is dead!” sobbed the miko as she rocked back and forth on the forest floor where she sat. Mokomoko curled around her but she hardly noticed, “He’s dead! He’s dead! I couldn’t protect him!” she wailed louder and she had to take a deep intake of breath to keep from fainting due to her grief, “I failed him!”
“Miko…” started Sesshomaru in a broken whisper but when she merely screamed at him he quieted. He knew she wanted not his words…he had tried to utter a word for hours and she hadn’t let him. It was as if the sound of his voice sent her on a nightmare and she would scream herself hoarse to stop the images, the pain.
“I am useless! I am useless!” she went on her wails and threw herself to the ground and curled into a fetal position, “My baby is gone.”
Red tears finally dripped down into Sesshomaru’s pants and he gasped in numb alarm. He had been…crying. He didn’t care…his chest hurt too much to want to hold his tears. His pup was dead, his woman was in the brink of insanity…he could very well lose her tonight as well.
In a blink he was by her, squeezing her tight against him and crying into her hair. She fought him at first, but he didn’t let go. A minute later her blunt human nails were digging into his back desperately, finding an anchor to this world. He would be that anchor, we would take away her pain. She was wrong…she was so wrong. “It wasn’t your fault my love,” he whispered between harsh breath and heavy tears, “it was mine…I left you unprotected.”
Her wails increased and she clung to him for life, “No,” she sobbed weakly, “He was my boy,” she cried and cried…and cried some more.
Sesshomaru hushed her and kissed her forehead, “I am so sorry, Kagome,” he told her as he hugged her even tighter, “I am so sorry, so sorry.”
