Spent With You
"But it's Valentine's Day. I had everything planned. Do you really have to go in today?" she pleaded with him as he was headed for the door.
"I'm really sorry, Kagome," he said as he shrugged into his suit jacket, "but I have to go. They need me there right now. It shouldn't take that long. I'll be back before you know it."
The pout on her face was evident, though she tried to hide it. He could see it right away.
He held her face in his hands and planted a kiss on her forehead. "I promise, ok?" and then placed a sweet kiss on her lips.
"Fine," she replied bitterly. And then he was out the door.
"Damn it," Sesshomaru cursed. It was well past the time work usually ended. Almost midnight. Why did it have to be tonight of all nights that I was needed for all that paperwork? They couldn't figure it out on their own? he thought.
The lights still shown brightly from the street when he got out of his car. He got to the door and attempted to open it as quietly as possible, hoping to avoid Kagome's impending wrath.
"Kagome?" he called out softly and closed the door gently behind him. Then he spotted her on the couch, but not waiting in agitation or fury. She was asleep. He walked over to where her head rested on the arm and set his suitcase down.
Well, this is bittersweet. She looked so beautiful lying there, and he felt a twinge of guilt looking at her and around her. She was already dressed in the vibrant red dress bought for the occasion; it rumpled some from her sleep, and he could only imagine how it would have looked twirling around her on the dance floor. Her hair had been put up into an intricate twist, waves still tumbling down so you could see the texture. Her new heels weren't even worn on her feet, instead lying next to the coffee table.
And on that coffee table, you could see all the construction paper, glue and heart cutouts. That was Kagome. It wasn't enough to just go out and buy something. It really came from her heart when she could make it. That's what she liked to believe and that's the exact affect it resulted in.
Sesshomaru took a hand and lifted her bangs from her forehead to give it a lingering kiss.
"Sorry for being late," he whispered. She made the tiniest noise, but hadn't woken up. I should probably get her to bed before she gets a crick in her neck.
He made sure to turn off the lights in the kitchen before picking her up. No need to backtrack. There were only candles burning in the living room and he blew them out on the way to the bedroom. Luckily, the door was already open. Unluckily, the bed was already made.
He just set her atop the sheets so he wouldn't wake her in his arms. He did his best to move the sheets from under her so he could tuck her in. She didn't stir. He slowly but surely removed the clips from her hair and let it fall and rest on the pillow.
He placed his suit jacket on the back of the computer chair and removed his shoes by the bed. He pulled his shirt free from his pants and took off his belt to drop by his shoes.
He lifted the sheets beside Kagome and climbed in. They're just clothes. It doesn't really matter what I sleep in. He looked over at Kagome's sleeping face and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. I guess we'll both be dressing formal for bed.
His hand held her cheek lovingly for a moment longer, and he couldn't help thinking how beautiful she looked in the moonlight.
"Goodnight, love," he said softly. Then he saw Kagome smile and crack an eye open.
"Sesshomaru."
"I thought you were asleep," he said, now drowsily, as if stating her once tiredness made him so.
"I was," she responded. She scooted herself closer and slid her arm around to his back and pressed her chest to his so she could feel his heartbeat. His arm draped over hers slid down to hold her around the waist.
"I'm sorry," he told her, "I couldn't get away. But you know I wanted to."
"It's ok," and she sounded like it really was.
"But I ruined your Valentine's Day. Everything you had planned."
"Well…it is just one day. The Valentine's part doesn't so much matter as knowing I get to spend at least some part of it with you. However little that is."
The arm at her waist tightened and he rest his forehead against hers.
"Still. I should make it up to you." She gave a little shrug.
"I'll let you know when I think of it," she said and her eyes drifted closed.
"Oh Sesshomaru?" she thought at the last minute but her eyes remained shut.
"Yes?" he asked through half-lidded eyes. She found his lips in the dark and gave him a loving kiss.
"Happy Valentine's. I love you," she said and snuggled in closer before leaving the conscious world.
"Happy Valentine's to you too, love," Sesshomaru said and fell asleep beside her.
