~The Choices We Make~ by Jessica

Past Mistakes

A choice, a wish, something that seemed so simple to the young and naïve Priestess came to her with such ease.

"I wish the Shikon No Tama from this world and from whence it came." Kagome said with hope and and fear.

Then the jewel was gone and the evil hanyou Naraku disintegrated in a puddle of miasma. Then the miasma was gone, like he had never existed and destroyed so many lives. The Inu Tachi beaten and bloody, but victorious at last after so many years and so much death, pain and suffering. They had won. Hugs, tears, high fives and so much love was passed around.

"Oi Kagome! Great job!" Inuyasha cheered as her scooped Kagome up in a tight and loving embrace.

"I love you Yasha you were so amazing." Kagome whispered.

Inuyasha turned bright red, he muttered under his breath "I love you too Gome."

Shippo and Kirara chased each other around in joy. Miroku and Sango shared a long and tender embrace.

"Now we shall make many children my love." Miroku whispered slyly in Sango's ear.

Blushing furiously all Sango could muster was a chaste, yet passion filled kiss as a response to Miroku's statement. They didn't want to wait for after the final battle, so the small family and of course Kaede celebrated their wedding just two weeks before. The whole village held a feast and lantern lighting as well. It was a wonderful night for the whole group, and they finally thought things were looking up for them. That is when the world for the Inu Tachi changed forever and in the worst ways possible. With the battle over a dark haze filled the open field and chaos, screams and then nothing was left but a broken and confused Priestess.

Kagome stared with tear filled azure eyes at the well, the well which once worked. That took her back and forth through the ages. Now it sits, dead and lifeless just as the rest of her friends, who after all the years together became her second family. All dead because of her and what she thought was the most selfless wish possible. After it had happened Kagome traveled far and wide searching for answers from every Monk, Priestess, Priest and Witch she could find as to why the wish had gone so wrong so haywire and so very deadly.

The best answer she received was, since her second family. Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Shippo and even Kirara had a bit of their soul touched by the jewel; and with Kagome's wish it took their souls and physical bodies along with the Shikon No Tama as it left this world.  But she could receive no answer as to why she was left stuck in the feudal era. Kagome believed it was punishment for her wish and the aftermath it caused.

Kagome stepped out of her small hut that sat on the edge of the village. Rising with the sun everyday, working as the village Priestess. It had been five long years since the tragedy of the wish and another three since Kaede passed away to the next life, Kagome's only solace was the fact Kaede died peacefully surrounded by all the villager's that loved and respected her all those years. Kagome was now 24 years old, sometimes she thought about the fact she would be done with college, starting a career and maybe even starting a relationship.  Kagome stretched out her sore muscles after her usual fitful night of sleep and her all consuming nightmares of the last images of her friends utterly disappearing as if they never existed. Kagome could still hear Sango's lasts words...

''I love you Miroku" and he was cut of from ever replying. The week before the wish happened Inuyasha had finally decided to that he wanted to settle down with Kagome and make her his Mate, once everything was settled and the jewel and Naraku were no longer of concern. Kagome ran her fingers over the braided bracelet Inuyasha had made for her as a proposal gift, she had never taken it off after all these years. She let out a small sigh and put her waist length hair in a low ponytail.

She proceeded to start her daily chores. Going out into the deep forest to pick out medicinal herbs and plants to make medicines and whatever the people of the village would come to her for. Kagome sat in a deep patch of wood surrounded by trees and many wild flowers Kagome felt a small smile grace her lips, wild flowers made her think of Rin. It had been so many years since she had seen the young girl. She was probably happily married and blessed with children by now. At least Kagome hoped, then a tear slipped down her alabaster skin and another and another until the floodgates opened, Kagome curled up in a ball as sobs of the totality of everything over the past eight years washed over her, would she ever be happy again? Did she even deserve happiness after all that had happened? She questioned herself over and over again.

"Miko."

Kagome jumped from her positon on the ground and looked at a face, into beautiful golden eyes she had not seen in over eight years.

"Sess..Sesshomaru Sama?"
