I think that maybe he went to Rin's grave. Rin was always a girl that liked flowers that would explain him smelling of flowers and earth can be from being at the grave site. I know he has changed a lot in your story emotionally but I think that this would probably have been a private moment for him to express how much he missed her. This is just my opinion.
