Just Waiting to Happen - oneshot dokuga exclusive
Hindsight is a bitch.
Kagome stared at the screen, willing the flashing message to disappear. How the hell did this happen? Her heart started to pound in anticipation as she clicked the message.
She heard rustling behind her, and turned to look through the darkness of the bedroom. Sesshomaru settled back into his pillow, still deep in his slumber. Having him here only made her more paranoid.
Turning back to her laptop, her opened message history awaited her:
#######
Kags: Hey Yasha! It was great bumping into you the other day! Hope all is well with you. And please tell your friend I'm really sorry for spilling his coffee. I'll buy him another.
Yasha: All's well here! Hope you're doing alright too. Sorry we had to rush off; planes don't really wait for us. Haha, I'll let Hojo know.
Kags: But not like a date or anything.
Yasha: Oh? But he'll be so disappointed.
Kags: I like my men manly, thank you.
Kags: OMG don't tell him that
Yasha: I'll stick with trying to be a manly man then haha
Kags: Sorry, I'm already taken haha. And let's be honest, I don't think I would've lived up to your standards anyways.
Yasha: You make it sound like I have insanely high standards. I don't bite, I swear.
Kags: Well I think to some degree everyone should have high standards. You deserve someone who treats you well and respects you, who brings out the best in you and vice versa (not saying that I couldn't). And I know you're nice, we went to high school together. ...where is this going?
Yasha: lol I don't know where you were going with that. But it's always fun to tease you.
Kags: Really? Is that what it was all those years?
Yasha: Is that what you think it was all these years? It's more that our circumstances were never right... I hope you wouldn't think such a thing.
#######
Kagome stared at his last message. Re-reading it, she tried to decipher the short message. What did he mean 'wouldn't think such a thing'? Kami, she grew up with him since they were twelve. All those awkward years were spent as sort-of friends. But they never dated, never got to be really close friends. There were so many chances.
All those years.
She had liked him for a long time; since she first met him, in fact. Her heart would always squeeze her throat if she saw his white fuzzy ears from afar, or knew that he would be in her class. She went through phases of how she treated him. It went from being incredibly shy, to cold-shouldered after he teased her, to a shy-flirty. Was this just to get his attention?
Kami, why couldn't she be more bold. Honesty would've cleared up everything. How could she be so young and stupid?
But no, he found a girlfriend when they were fourteen. She followed suit, finding her own boyfriend soon after. Of course, being highschool, those relationships didn't last...except they were never single at the same time. Then they graduated and went their seperate ways. Last she heard he was still dating Kikyo, his highschool sweetheart from senior year.
She had met Sesshomaru in university after convincing herself that studying abroad would give her a fresh new beginning. It wasn't until a year into their relationship that she found out Inuyasha was an estranged half-brother of his. It was then, too, that she found out Inuyasha had gone through a particulary bad break-up with Kikyo. Something along the lines him being cheated on multiple times?
But she never thought to get in touch with Inuyasha to become friends again. Sesshomaru was indifferent about his half-brother. They were practically strangers. Thoughts of brotherly bonding opportunities were thrown out the window when she walked into a heated argument between their respective mothers, Inukimi and Izayoi. It just wasn't going to happen.
And Sesshomaru... he was her dream come true. His honesty was freeing, and she could finally be herself. He was supportive, and protective, and so loving. She loved that he was hers, and that only she could read his emotions. She was one of the few people he had allowed to break through his emotional shell.
Sighing, she started to piece together a reply. As she moved her hands to the keyboard, a glint of light sparkled on her left hand. She had to know. It would be closure.
#######
Kags: I feel like some clarification is in order. What I meant to say is what the teasing meant all those years?
Yasha: Hmm. Well...I don't know if I can define that.
#######
Kagome's heart stopped. The screen had shifted almost immediately. That means..
#######
Kags: Oh Kami, you're online.
Yasha: lol what. I'm at the airport waiting for my flight.
Kags: I see
Kags: sigh
Yasha: ?
Kags: I feel miscommunication breeds drama. It's like high school all over again.
Yasha: Ah, well...
Yasha: The important thing is now we're good friends.
Kags: Yes, I guess we are haha. I feel like we're finally on the same page.
Yasha: Agreed lol
Yasha: Well, they just called boarding on my flight.
Yasha: Take care, my friend.
Kags: You too, have a safe flight!
#######
Kagome closed her laptop quickly so she wouldn't see his answer. She cringed at her falsed emotions. Good friends. Why did she feel so hollow?
An overwhelming mix of guilt and dread weighed heavily on her chest. Guilt for almost starting an affair, and dread for thinking of what could have been.
She dove straight into her mind of possibilities. They probably would've dated, and still have been dating if things had worked out. He had always treated her differently.
But they were too different; especially now, having grown up. Would their relationship even have lasted? Who's to say he didn't treat her like every other girl he knew? Was she really just a friend to him? How would dating him have changed who she was compared to her present self?
Dawn light peeked through the curtains. Kagome gave a tired sigh. She should probably get some sleep.
Getting up, she made her way to the bed and climbed in next to her husband. The possibilities of what-ifs played through her mind as she drifted off.
