Cerulean blue orbs gazed blankly out the window. In the background of the classroom, she could hear the whispers of the other students, her companions, her friends, talking about her as if she wasn’t there.
Idly, she knew she should be annoyed, in the past she would have been, but for now, she was content to ignore them. They had no idea of what she was going through, what she had experienced. No, they thought that she had been gone for almost that entire year due to illnesses. They didn’t know of her secret.
Pulling her gaze away from staring out the glass panes to where the sun shone down brightly on the trees outside, Kagome looked down to her hand resting in a loose fist on her desk. Splaying her fingers, she turned it ever so slightly so that she was able to see her palm and focused.
Energy, bright, pure and a soft pink with a hint of white along the outside edge enveloped her hand. Her secret, her legacy. One that normal humans of this era knew nothing about. Because of that, it made her different, even if they didn’t realize it.
Closing her hand to make a fist again, she released a soft sigh as her reiki, what made her a miko, fade to nothing. What she wouldn’t give to feel the subtle pressure, the burn of youkai against her senses once more.
But that was impossible. The well had closed. Naraku had been defeated, after a long year of turmoil, battles, heartache and so much more. It had been five long months since her return to her era after making the unselfish wish for the Shikon no Tama to disappear from the world forever. At first, she had cried, even though she had known that once the jewel was gone, she would return. But leaving all those she held dear in her heart behind…it hadn’t made it any easier.
She was doing better. Nowadays she didn’t feel the burn of tears behind her eyes at the mere thought of her friends, she didn’t fall into a small depression reminiscing of their adventures. She had given herself time to grieve, to adapt once more to this world and force herself to carry on. It wasn’t in her to linger on the past, to indulge in self pity. She would make the best of what she had and continue on. For now, her plan was to finish her schooling and graduate.
Luckily, she had passed her former year and was able to continue on, and that was all due to sheer stubbornness on her part. She refused to fail and be left behind. She had more integrity than that and she would not dishonour her family by failing to complete her education.
Hearing the bell rang that signalled the dismissal of the day of school, Kagome slowly stood taking up her school bag and slung it over her shoulder. It was light, she had no homework. After a year of travelling on the road constantly, she had become highly proficient at finishing her given homework in class; having a inu-hanyou breathing down your neck to finish as fast as possible had made it possible for her to work under pressure and complete given assignments in a short allotted time, and get the answers correct as well.
Not that he ever appreciated it, Kagome mused with a small fond smile.
Giving absent minded smile and waves to her friends saying farewell for the day, she switched her shoes and stepped out of the school yard and walked down the road. On a whim, she decided to go on a random adventure, for she had no wish to go home at the moment and be pestered by her grandfather since her mother and younger brother would be gone until later.
Remembering there was a bus stop nearby, she headed towards it, and sat on the bench and waited patiently. It wasn’t long before one arrived. Dropping off currency with a smile and a nod to the bus driver, she found herself a seat amongst the crowd of people and looked out the window to watch the scenery go by.
The rocking motion and stop start of the bus made her relax back into her seat, and lazily she leaned against the window. She paid no attention to the others on board, content to mind her own business, but at one point, a man boarded that had obviously imbibed in heavy amounts of alcohol and hadn’t showered in some time.
Delicately, her nose curled at the stench, causing those seated or standing nearby to back away. Annoyed, because she was reluctant to move, Kagome allowed her reiki to flare, secure that no one would notice or understand and was satisfied when the scent dissipated under the crisp freshness of her purity.
Murmurs started passing between passengers, and she listened catching a few words of how nice it suddenly smelt. A small secret smile played on her lips as she pulled the bell to signal she wanted off. As the bus came to a stop, she flashed a brilliant smile to the driver when told to have a nice day. “You too!” She replied as she disembarked.
Humming softly, she began to walk, content to just wonder, when her sixth sense warned her of a danger. Slowly, she looked around swiftly, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Brow furrowing, she continued on, glancing about warily and proceeded towards an area where she knew it would be somewhat secluded.
The sense of danger didn’t pass, and she felt as if she was being followed.
No…she paused again, eyes narrowing. Stalked. And for some odd reason, this felt familiar.
Abruptly she flared her reiki, this time in challenge and whipped around to a spot behind her where the shadows of the day were the deepest. Eyes trained on the spot, she felt a lurch in her heart, of excitement and a thrill before a sense of calm filled her.
“I know you’re there,” she said quietly.
She saw shadows move, before a figure stepped forwards.
Golden eyes met her own blue orbs. “Hn.”
Unable to help herself, Kagome smiled. “Hello, Sesshomaru.”
