Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me, and a nod of recognition goes to the creator of this challenge.
Chapter 1: Apple Bobbing
“May Rin play too, Sesshoumaru-sama?”
Golden eyes slanted her way, taking in her bright expression, before the daiyoukai inclined his head. His ears twitched when she squealed in delight.
“Thank you! Rin will try her best to get an apple for her Lord!”
As his ward skipped forward to join the other village children in line, the Shikon Miko’s voice caught his attention. “I’m glad you came today,” she said, smiling up at him. The waves of her dark hair were tied back, and the sleeves of her white haori were rolled up to her shoulders. “She seems happy.”
Sesshoumaru arched a brow at her last statement but otherwise said nothing. He canted his head at her soft giggle.
“I know what you’re thinking: As if you’d settle for anything less, right?”
“Do all humans partake in such a ridiculous game?” he inquired deeply, strangely pleased when she appeared surprised by his question. “Well, miko?”
A rosy blush colored her cheeks. “It’s not ridiculous…” she mumbled, embarrassed. “It’s fun for the kids.”
“Are you a child?”
Kagome rolled her eyes, furthering his amusement. “Of course not. But adults celebrate Halloween, too!”
“Halloween,” the foreign word fell carefully from the Western Lord’s lips. Though he was rather curious about the subject, he would not ask about it. It soon became apparent, however, that he didn’t have to, for the woman explained it to him anyway.
“It’s an annual holiday that’s dedicated to the dead. It’s also supposed to be a day during which spirits and other souls of the departed visit our world. And sometimes they can cause havoc, so that’s why we perform customs to ward them off.”
Sesshoumaru sniffed lightly. “Tenseiga could easily dispatch these supposed specters. None would be foolish enough to cross this one.”
“I know, Sesshoumaru-sama.” Kagome grinned indulgently. “All should fear your mighty strength and pray they never encounter your blade.”
“Hn,” he agreed, despite being well-aware that she was only teasing him. “What else do you presume to know, miko?” He kept his face blank when she leaned toward him while eying the little girl in the orange, checkered kimono. An apple dangled from a string before her mouth.
“If Rin-chan bites into the apple, she’ll be the next one allowed to marry,” Kagome whispered ominously. Then, she laughed wholeheartedly when the silver-haired male blinked in shock and abruptly went to stop his ward.
